Tsunami: NO major tsunami reported, as of posting.

Death Toll: At least 39 deaths have been confirmed, with hundreds of others reported injured or missing.

Damage: Many buildings reportedly destroyed or damaged across the San Marcos region.

• The authorities have declared a national alert advising  people to evacuate tall buildings in case of destructive aftershocks.

• Dozens of aftershocks had occurred, as of posting, with at least five of  them measuring magnitude 5.0 or greater.

• The tremor shook buildings as far away as Mexico City, some 1,000km NNW of the event.

• The quake was the largest tremor to strike Guatemala since 1976 when 25,000 were killed in 7.5Mw, according to Guatemala’s Seismological Institute.

• The quake follows a 7.6Mw shock which  struck beneath the Nicoya peninsula, 137 km (85 miles) west of  the capital, San Jose, in September.

Soaring heat spurs more forest fires across Canary Islands forcing thousands to flee their homes

A new round of forest fires consumed hundreds of hectares on Tenerife and La Gomera islands, two of Spain’s Canary Islands, located off the coast of Africa.

• At least 4,000 people were evacuated.
• The new blazes have consumed a total of about 1,000 hectares on both island.
• Since last week, wildfires have consumed about 4,000 hectares on Canary Islands.

• East Azerbaijan province, Iran.  Death toll from the two strong earthquakes that struck NW Iran on August 11 has climbed to about 300, with more than 5,000 people injured.
  • The quakes affected about a 1,000 rural communities, destroying or severely damaging 150 villages.
  • Many of the mountains villages are hard to reach by road.
  • About 36,000 people were evacuated to emergency shelters, news media reported officials as saying.
  • About 70 aftershocks have struck the area, as of posting.

  • Dallas County has reported 181 infections, which have resulted in at least nine deaths.

 OCCURRED FOR AT LEAST TWO HOURS AFTER THE ESTIMATED ARRIVAL TIME
 OR DAMAGING WAVES HAVE NOT OCCURRED FOR AT LEAST TWO HOURS THEN
 LOCAL AUTHORITIES CAN ASSUME THE THREAT IS PASSED. DANGER TO
 BOATS AND COASTAL STRUCTURES CAN CONTINUE FOR SEVERAL HOURS DUE

Activity Summary for past 24 hours:  The summit continued to inflate slowly while back-to-back DI events and sympathetic summit lava lake oscillations continued. Overnight, glow was visible within the Halema`uma`u gas plume and from sources within Pu`u `O`o crater. To the southeast, surface flows continued to be active on the pali and the coastal plain; there was no ocean entry. Seismic tremor levels were low; gas emissions were elevated: HVO

Kīlauea Volcano.  Active flows continued over a broad area on the coastal plain on April 5, 2012.  “This composite image combines a normal photograph and a thermal image to show the areas of active breakouts. Yellow areas are active flows while red areas are inactive, but still warm, flows. The flow front in the lower right was 1.6 km (1 mile) from the ocean,” HVO said.

Alert Level Increased for Iliamna Volcano, AK

Since January 2012 the earthquake rate at Iliamna Volcano has steadily increased and now exceeds normal background levels.

A gas and steam plume continued to extend downwind from the summit vent throughout the past week, but there were no further reports of unrest or activity at Pagan volcano, USGS said.
