Death Toll: At least 39 deaths have been confirmed, with hundreds of others reported injured or missing.
Damage: Many buildings reportedly destroyed or damaged across the San Marcos region.
- The authorities have declared a national alert advising people to evacuate tall buildings in case of destructive aftershocks.
- Dozens of aftershocks had occurred, as of posting, with at least five of them measuring magnitude 5.0 or greater.
- The tremor shook buildings as far away as Mexico City, some 1,000km NNW of the event.
- The quake was the largest tremor to strike Guatemala since 1976 when 25,000 were killed in 7.5Mw, according to Guatemala’s Seismological Institute.
- The quake follows a 7.6Mw shock which struck beneath the Nicoya peninsula, 137 km (85 miles) west of the capital, San Jose, in September.
