500 Dead or missing, ¼ million displaced in Malawi floods
Malawi floods are a “national tragedy that urgently needs both local and international response,” the president has said.
The floods have devastated half the the country’s 28 districts, destroying thousands of homes, washing away scores of livestock, and submerging hundreds of hectares of crops, a senior official said.
Last week, the Malawi president declared more than a third of the country disaster areas, as torrential rains inundated large swathes of land, destroying crops, homes, roads, railroads and other infrastructure.
“I flew over some parts of the Lower Shire but we could not find anywhere to land,” said the country’s vice president. “It’s a big challenge we have before us.”
“Most of Nsanje and East Bank are submerged under two to three meters of water, which has transformed these vast plains into a giant lake engulfing houses and bridges,” said Doctors Without Borders’ mission head in Malawi’s south, AP reported.
“Sanitation will be compromised now with waterborne diseases such as cholera, dysentery and typhoid likely to occur,” said Malawi’s health ministry spokesman.

Rainstorm Destroys or damages about 60,000 Homes in South China
More than two dozen people are dead or reported as missing, after extreme rain events battered south China, said the Ministry of Civil Affairs on Tuesday.
Extreme rain and flooding have affected more than 1.16 million people in seven Chinese provinces —Fujian, Jiangxi, Hunan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Chongqing and Guizhou—forcing at least 17,000 to flee their homes, said the ministry.

The fierce storm system has dumped about 300 mm of rain, the equivalent of about two months’ rainfall, in some areas since March 27.

Bolivia Declares a State of Emergency amid Deadly Floods, Mudslides
Deadly floods and mudslides have claimed dozens of lives in Bolivia, forcing tens of thousands of people to flee their homes.
Widespread flooding have destroyed thousands of hectares (acres) of crops and threaten more than 100,000 cattle, according to reports citing the government.
Extreme Rain Events, said to be 500 percent worse than the rainfall last year, have affected about quarter of a million people in the central, northern and northeastern portions of the Andean country.
Death Toll Rises to 50 in Brazil Floods; 60,000 Displaced
Dozens of people are confirmed dead, and more than 60,000 others displaced due to severe flooding and landslides in Brazil’s southeast states of Minas Gerais and Espirito Santo, authorities said.
At least 54 of the 79 municipalities in Espirito Santo (population: 4 million), have declared states of emergency. In Minas Gerais (population: 20 million), the authorities have declared states of emergency in at least 26 municipalities.
Extreme Rain Events in Espirito Santo have inundated roads, bridges and homes. The floods were the “worst ever” since record-taking began 90 years ago, said the Espirito Santo governor Renato Casagrande.
He called the week-long rainstorm “the worst natural disaster in thehistory of Espirito Santo.”
Most of the victims were buried in deadly torrents of mud and authorities say the death toll may rise. Landslides have also destroyed a large number of homes, roads and bridges, burying everything in their paths and leaving dozens of cities (Municipalities) are without electricity and drinking water.

Tropical storm INGRID weakens having affected 1.2 million people
INGRID weakened to a tropical depression, dissipating over the mountains of Eastern Mexico, said the U.S. National Hurricane Center.
Mexican government declared states of emergency in 23 towns in eastern Tamaulipas state after INGRID left the area devastated.
Mexico’s Interior Secretary Miguel Ángel Osorio Chong described the catastrophic floods as a “historic” natural disaster after twin storms pummeled southern Mexico on Monday.
Historic flooding and landslides triggered by twin storms INGRID and MANUEL left at least 42 people dead, forcing the evacuation of tens of thousands and stranding at least 40,000 tourists.
Tropical Storm MANUEL made landfall on Sunday near the port of Manzanillo, on Mexico’s Pacific coast, causing devastation in the Pacific resort of Acapulco, where raging floodwaters and massive landslides claimed at least 21 lives.
The storms have affected an estimated 1.2 million people in the states of Veracruz, Puebla, Guerrero, Hidalgo, Michoacan and Oaxaca, the national emergency services said.
“Landslides buried homes and a bus in the eastern state of Veracruz, while thousands were evacuated from flooded areas, some by helicopter, and taken to shelters.”
The twin storms have destroyed or damaged about 30,000 homes throughout the affected regions in southern Mexico, FIRE-EARTH estimates.
