About 5 percent of China’s population directly affected by drought

FIRE-EARTH Models show up to 60 million people in China are affected by the persistent drought in at least 12 provinces.

Hundreds of rivers, lakes and reservoirs along the Yangtze River have dried up amid worsening drought, said the local drought relief headquarters.

“Figures released by the Hubei Provincial Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters on Friday showed that 900 reservoirs and 132 rivers have been affected by the drought, causing one-third of the province’s farmland to dry up.”

Widespread drought has severely affected also the provinces of Hunan and Guizhou , as well as Chongqing Municipality in the Yangtze River valley, a major rice-producing area.

China bans milk powder imports from New Zealand, Australia

China has banned imports of all milk powder from New Zealand and Australia, New Zealand’s trade minister said. The ban comes after bacteria that can cause botulism found in some dairy products, said a report.

Monsoon floods kill at least 100 people in Pakistan, Afghanistan

A vast region in Pakistan and eastern Afghanistan has again suffered devastating monsoon floods for a third consecutive year.

The floods have destroyed or damaged thousands of  homes and businesses, as well as much of the local infrastructure in both countries. Meantime, officials have warned that more rain could hit the region.

In 2010, the worst monsoon floods in Pakistan’s history left about 2,000 people dead and affected more than 21 million others.

Severe flooding displaces more than 247,000 people in southern Philippines

At least 20 towns were flooded in the southern island of Mindanao, following a week of monsoon rains, displacing about quarter of a million people, the country’s national disaster relief agency said.

Floods inundate at six towns on Myanmar-Thai border

Extreme Rain Events have flooded creeks Myanmar-Thai border inundating towns in the southeastern state of Kayin, reports said.

“Myawaddy, another town along the Myanmar-Thai border, was heavily flooded and Myawaddy-Hpa-an border trade routes were inundated,” said a report.

Flooding in NW Pakistan claims dozens of lives, affects thousands

Heavy rains in northwest Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province has killed at least 35 people and injured dozens more, destroying or damaging hundrds of homes and displacing thousands of residents, emergency officials said.

  • Meantime, heavy snow fell over the country’s northern mountain ranges, breaking a 30-year record in Malam Jabba.
  • “More than three meters of snow fell in as many days, setting a new record,”  said Pakistan’s chief of meteorology.

Arizona, USA

Arizona Governor Brewer has issued a Declaration of Emergency after unusually cold temperatures froze pipes causing water shortages affecting the Hopi Tribe, Navajo Nation and parts of Apache, Coconino and Navajo counties, said a report.

South Sudan

South Sudan’s Eastern Equatoria state has made an urgent appeal for international aid to avoid  humanitarian disaster caused by food crisis in the Kapoeta region after drought followed by heavy rains wiped out crops, said a report.

Thousands killed or injured, five million affected in Pakistan’s extreme monsoon flooding

Extreme monsoon flooding in Pakistan has left about 500 dead, thousands injured, hundrdes of thousands displaced and 5 million others affected.

  • Floodwaters have submerged vast areas in Sindh, Punjab and Baluchistan provinces since August, killing about 250 people in Sindh province alone, reports said.
  • The victims affected by the mega flooding include 1.4 million children who are “experiencing devastating flooding for the second or third time over the past three years, and these new floods have disrupted their recovery,” said UNICEF.

  • Assam, India. Third wave of flooding so far this year has left more than 1.8 million people marooned in India’s northeastern state of Assam.
    • Thousands of villages in 18 of the state’s 27 districts have been submerged under floodwater.
    • Flooding has destroyed tens of thousands of homes, and left about ¼ of million people displaced, scores of others dead, injured or missing.
    • Health authorities have issued a state-wide alert due to sewage-contaminated water.
    • Hundreds of thousands of hectares of crops have been destroyed.
    • “Nearly 130 people were killed and six million displaced by the floodwaters in Assam two months ago, which came during India’s June-September monsoon,” said a report.
  • PakistanFlooding in northwestern, southwestern, central, and southern parts of Pakistan has affected about 4.5 million people so far this year, officials said.
    • The deluge has killed at least 370 people, and left about 1,200 others injured.
    • Floods have destroyed more than 120,000 homes, and seriously damaged about 155,000 others.
    • Up to a million acres of crops have been destroyed.
    • Pakistan’s southern province of Sindh is the worst hit region with at least 188 killed and 743 injured due to the flooding, followed by Punjab with 60 dead, said a report.
    • Only about 5 percent of the 4,472,351 people affected were moved to relief camps while 4,189,825 are living in the open, without shelter or basic amenities, the report quoted Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) as saying.

Pakistan’s Dera Ghazi Khan, parts of Manila, Philippines and 10 Thai provinces submerged by floodwater

Thousands of people have been evacuated in central Pakistan, Metro Manila, Philippines and 10 of Thailand’s 77 provinces after floodwater inundated large areas.

  • Pakistan. At least 400 people have been  killed or injured due to flooding, triggered by extreme rain events, in Pakistan since late August.
    • Nearly four weeks  of torrential heavy rains across Pakistan have caused significant damage to property and public infrastructure in the country.

Disease Outbreaks Threaten Pakistan Flood Victims

Diarrhea and cholera wreaking havoc in many of Pakistan’s flooded areas

About 80% of the town of Jacobabad in Sindh province was buried under 1.5m (5ft) of water, as a tsunami of floodwaters were rapidly moving south towards the state of Balochistan, UNHCR reported.

The situation in Sindh continues to deteriorate, as the second wave of floodwaters quickly moves into the south of the province, the report said.
