Numerous Freeze Warnings, Watches, and Frost Advisories issued for 18 states in NE, Mid-Atlantic

The US National Weather Service has made the following forecast for the Middle Atlantic and Northeast:

Coldest airmass of the fall season has overspread the Middle Atlantic and Northeast; warming up this week

The coldest temperatures so far this season have overspread the Northeast and mid-Atlantic this weekend. Numerous Freeze Warnings, Watches, and Frost Advisories are in effect. A warm-up is in store this week. Meanwhile, heavy rain and flash flooding continue to be possible in portions of the Southwest and Great Basin.

Red Flag Warnings

Red Flag warnings are in effect in eastern Kansas, SE Nebraska, Most of Iowa, N Illinois, NW Indiana and northern half of Missouri.

 

Freeze Warning in Effect for NE Minnesota, Douglas County Wisconsin

Temperatures forecast to drop to as low as 20s (F)

These conditions will kill crops and other sensitive vegetation, according to the NWS Forecast.

Freeze Warning areas includes the cities of Roseau, Warroad, Greenbush, Baudette, Newfolden, Middle River, Grygla, Red Lake, Redby, Ponemah, Thief River Falls, Red Lake Falls, Fosston, Fertile, Mcintosh, Erskine, Bagley, Clearbrook, Bemidji, Mahnomen, Naytahwaush, Waubun, Alida, Ebro, Lake Itasca, Long Lost Lake, Lower Rice Lake, Roy Lake, Upper Rice Lake, Park Rapids, Wolf Lake, Wadena and Menahga.

Frost Advisory is in effect for a wide band of areas encircling the locations under Freeze Warning in the two states as well as eastern North Dakota.

Arctic blast continues across much of the US: NWS

First major winter storm of the 2014/15 hitting the Rockies

A January-like weather pattern is forecast to continue across most of the US, with
another arctic surface high moving south from Canada, said NWS forecasters, reinforcing the freezing air mass already in place . . . “unseasonably cold temperatures will fall even further this weekend, and the cold temperatures will persist for most of the central and eastern U.S.”

The first significant winter storm for the central Rockies and intermountain West is underway and bringing heavy snow to the higher elevations and a wintry mix to the valley locations. Parts of Oregon and Idaho have already seen significant snow and ice accumulations from this event, and winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories are in effect from Oregon to the Colorado Rockies. The cold weather is forecast to affect the Deep South, with sub-freezing overnight lows from eastern Texas to the southeast coast, said the forecasters.

Powerful cold front forcing frigid conditions to central and eastern U.S.

Wind Chill Warnings are in effect for more than a dozen states as a powerful cold front brings life-threatening air mass from the North Pole.

Winds of up to 50mph and subzero temperatures in the U.S.  Midwest are plunging the wind chill readings as the arctic air continues to surge into the Great Lakes region.

“The core of the cold air settles across the region tonight. This will result in low temperatures well below zero and widespread wind chill readings of 35 to 45 degrees below zero are expected through Tuesday morning. Limited outdoor activity is advised for tonight and Tuesday morning. If you must be outdoors, wear layers as well as a hat and gloves. Frostbite can develop on exposed skin in as little at 10 minutes with wind chills this low.” NWS reported.

The entire Midwest is experiencing a propane shortage

The supply shortage in the upper Midwest has caused delivery delays and reduced delivery amounts for propane customers in at least 33 states, including ALL Midwestern states, and  D.C., as of posting . The propane shortage has been caused by a combination of unusually cold winter temperatures, closure of a major pipeline supplying propane to Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa and increased propane demand for grain drying due to a wet fall, said the Office of Governor Scott Walker in a statement.

Frigid conditions to persist in the northern Plains, Midwest, South and East amid propane shortages

Polar air mass surging into the northern Plains and Midwest will continue moving south through mid-week lowering temperatures by as much as 35 degrees. Meanwhile, icy conditions could impact a vast region from south-central Texas to the Carolinas, said NWS.

A clipper system along the leading edge of significantly cold air mass
will move rapidly northeastward to Southeastern Canada by Monday night. The associated cold front will race off the East Coast and Gulf Coast by Monday night.

A cold area of high pressure over West-Central Canada will move southward to the Ohio Valley by Tuesday. NWS

National Heating Fuel Shortages

“Last week, the U.S. Department of Energy reported that cold weather led to record-high natural gas storage withdrawals, as well as propane.  These are the largest drawdowns in the 20-year history of the survey and the second time this year the record has been broken. Efforts are underway with the U.S. Department of Energy to acknowledge that emergency conditions could be forming, as consumers and businesses in dozens of state are faced with higher electricity and gas costs due to persistent cold weather,”  said the National Propane Gas Association (NPGA) in its latest Statement on Propane Supply, Demand, and Distribution.

Some of the propane gas retailers have run out of supplies in the worst hit areas in the South, East and Midwest, said NPGA.

Propane shortage

The price of propane, a liquefied petroleum gas, soared to $4.30 – $5.0 a gallon on Friday, more than double its price a week ago, Reuters reported.

The crisis caused by record-breaking freeze coincides with pipeline outages and low inventories, has already led to fuel rationing in Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee, said the report.

“We could be sitting in this situation to spring,” said the Wisconsin Propane Gas Association.

Jindal declares 2nd State of Emergency for Louisiana due to brutal cold

Louisiana Gov. Jindal declared a second state of emergency for Louisiana on Friday (January 24) after National Weather Service (NWS) issued freeze warnings and hard freeze warnings for parishes across the Pelican State. The first state of emergency, proclaimed on January 22 was  to facilitate uninterrupted deliveries of propane and other heating fuels in Louisiana and out of state, as millions of people experienced propane shortages amid the brutal cold across wide swathes of the United States.

National Weather Service predicts that the dangerously frigid temperatures currently affecting the central and eastern United States will impact the southern states through the weekend, creating hazardous winter weather conditions throughout the State … the National Weather Service has issued winter weather advisories, freeze warnings and hard freeze warnings for parishes across the State for the next twenty-four hours making driving conditions hazardous … State offices have been closed in thirty-eight parishes and schools have been closed in thirty-seven parishes due to the hazards  posed by this extreme winter weather, and these winter weather conditions threaten the lives and property of the citizens of the State of Louisiana …

Southern U.S. Freezes Over!

Hard Freeze Warnings and Freeze Warnings Issued for 12 Southern States

A strong cold front is sweeping through parts of the central and eastern U.S. Winter-like temperatures will reach the East Coast and Deep South by Tuesday, said forecasters at NOAA.

Daytime highs are expected to fall as much as 10 to 20 degrees below normal across these regions with nighttime temperatures dipping into the 20s or 30s, even as far south as Texas!

Freeze Warning 101

Freeze Warnings are issued when minimum temperatures are forecast to be 32 degrees or less during the local growing season. This means that confidence is high that freezing temperatures will occur.

The first and last freeze can have a significant impact on the economy across crop-growing regions, especially areas heavily dependent on agricultural interests. These freezes do not cause extraordinary problems when they occur near the “normal” time frame. However, an early autumn or late spring freeze can have tremendous affects, especially when they are preceded by warm periods.

What is the growing season?

The local growing season is defined by both climate and elevation. It is technically described as the time during which native vegetation, ornamental plants, and crops can be grown. This is loosely defined as the period between the last hard freeze of the spring and the first hard (or killing freeze) of the fall.

A Hard Freeze Warning means sub-freezing temperatures are imminent or highly likely. These conditions will kill crops and any remaining outdoor vegetation

“Early season” snowstorm surges south and east across the U.S.

A powerful early season snow storm is forecast to bring light to heavy snow, freezing temperatures and strong winds to the north-central Plains today. Snow will expand to the central Plains and the northern Rockies on Friday and Saturday, NOAA forecasters said.

• Forecasters in several locations are calling for overnight low temperatures in the 20s that will bring an end to the growing season. A hard freeze with temperatures in the 20s is expected through 9 a.m. Friday in western South Dakota and northeast Wyoming. Freezing overnight temperatures are also expected in parts of Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas and Missouri.
• The cold front is expected to move into much of the Eastern United States and the Deep South.
• Hard Freeze Warnings,  Freeze Warnings, Hazardous Weather Outlook,  and various winter-weather watches and advisories are in effect across much of the country.

China. Landslide death toll in Yiliang County, located in SW China’s Yunnan province,  has climbed to at least 19, including 18 primary school children.

• Eight-hundred residents were relocated after the landslide.

• Yiliang was struck by a cluster of earthquakes on September 7, which left 81 people dead and 800 others injured, said a report.

South Africa.  Anglo American Platinum, world’s largest platinum producer, has fired 12,000 striking South African miners after a protracted strike over wages, reports said.

• Clashes between striking miners and police left one worker dead.
• Some 34 miners were shot dead by the “post-apartheid” police in August.

At least 32 provinces in Thailand, about half the country, have been declared drought disaster areas, according to the country’s Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department.

  • Drought has affected millions of people throughout the agricultural sector.  In three northeastern provinces of Buriram, Chaiyabhumi and Nakorn Ratchasima alone, at least half a million people have been affected, requiring water rations, reports said.

• Idaho, USA.  The city of Moscow in Idaho has declared a disaster emergency following weeks of torrential rains and extensive flooding, a report said.
  • City officials have warned residents to immediately go to higher ground if rising water threatens their safety.
• Great Lakes, Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic States.  NWS has issued Freeze Warnings for Great Lakes, Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic States:
  • “After an extended period of record-breaking warmth across the central and eastern United States, high pressure will usher in colder air into the Great Lakes, Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic regions tonight. Low temperatures are forecast to range from the lower 20s to the lower 30s at several locations. With an early growing season already in progress, any vegetation susceptible to freezing temperatures over an extended period of time may be at risk to severe damage. In addition, pets should be brought indoors during the overnight.”

• Colorado, USA. A fast-moving wildfire in the mountains southwest of Denver has consumed at least 3,000 acres, leaving 1 person dead, destroying dozens of structures and forcing thousands of residents in and around Conifer (Jefferson County) to abandon their homes.
  • “The fire is the largest of about a dozen that burned from the northeast plains to the southern part of the state, and scorched four-and-half square miles in only a few hours,” said a report.
