Up to a million people affected in China’s latest water pollution scare

Authorities suspend water supply in  east China’s Jingjiang City (Jiangsu Province) on Friday after “abnormal water quality” was detected in the Yangtze River, reported Xinhua.

“The city’s water company detected a strange odor in the river water around 10 a.m., said a statement posted by the city’s official account on microblogging site Sina Weibo.”

The latest episode is one of a series of water pollution incidents that has caused major concern across China.

In April, excessive levels of benzene were detected in Lanzhou city’s tap water. Lanzhou (population: ~ 4 million) is the capital city of northwest China’s Gansu Province.

Sandstorms Plague NW China

A  second sandstorm to hit NW China in three weeks blew thousands of tons of sand into Gansu Province Wednesday afternoon, reducing visibility to less than 50 meters, according to weather officials.

On April 3, another  major sandstorm hit NW China, severely affecting parts of  Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

Another Town Destroyed by Floods

Extreme Rain Events trigger devastating floods in NW China

Severe floods have destroyed Niangniangba Town in Qinzhou District of Tianshui City, in northwest China’s Gansu Province.

Extreme rain events, flooding and landslides have affected more than 1.22 million people, leaving at least 20 dead or missing in Tianshui in recent days, said a report.

Drought Affecting Tens of Millions in China

Western China hit by severe drought

Severe drought has affected at least 23.7 million people in western China’s Yunnan, Gansu and Sichuan provinces since October 2012, causing economic losses of more than 1.1 billion U.S dollars, said the authorities.

Persistent drought has scorched Yunnan Province, causing crop failure and reducing agricultural production throughout the province. Many people in the province’s  mountainous areas lack drinking water, said a report.

In NW China’s Gansu province about 4.5 million people have been affected by the ongoing drought;  more than 650,000 people lack drinking water.

Beijing Blasted by Sandstorms Twice in Two Days

Beijing was hit Monday by a second sandstorm just two days after a severe sandstorm struck on Saturday. The sandstorm originated from Mongolia and arrived in Beijing Monday morning, but was expected to subside by the evening.

“The sandstorm from Mongolia arrived in Beijing Monday morning, and is expected to weaken by Monday evening,” said Zhang Mingying, senior engineer with the Beijing Meteorological Station, official news agency Xinhua reported.

The Sandstorm spawned by strong winds has swept over north China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, as well as Shanxi and Hebei provinces, he was reported as saying.

“Dust and sand left from Saturday’s sandstorm was still affecting Beijing Monday,” Zhang said.

“Although the sky was not as orange as Saturday, the smell of the dust was stronger on Monday,” said Li Nan, a Beijing resident.

What’s Behind the Sandstorms?

In short, it’s the economy. The impact of exponential growth economy has driven China’s fragile ecosystems to the verge of collapse. The environmental stress caused by overconsumption of water, deforestation, land-use change and severe droughts, enhanced by climate change, are accelerating the desertification in northern China.
