State of Emergency Declared in West Virginia after Chemical Spill

300,000 People without water as chemical pollutes Elk River in
Charleston

Governor Tomblin has declared a State of Emergency for nine counties in West Virginia following a major spill of 4-Methylcyclohexane Methanol, a chemical used in the coal industry, along the Elk River in Charleston.

Tomblin has urged the residents NOT to use tap water for drinking, cooking, washing or bathing.

“West Virginians in the affected service areas are urged NOT to use tap water for drinking, cooking, washing or bathing. Right now, our priorities are our hospitals, nursing homes, and schools,” said Gov. Tomblin in a statement.

The State of Emergency Declaration is for Boone, Cabell, Clay, Jackson, Kanawha, Lincoln, Logan, Putnam, and Roane counties.  “This declaration follows a notice from West Virginia American Water Company that its water supply had become contaminated.  Residents served by Lincoln PSD, Queen Shoals PSD, Reamer PSD, City of Culloden PSD, and City of Hurricane PSD are also affected.” according to the WV State website.

A DEP spokesperson said the chemical was 4-methylcyclohexane methanol, a “sudsing agent,”  which is used in the processing of coal.

School Closures

Schools were ordered closed in  Boone,  Clay, Jackson, Kanawha, Lincoln and Putnam counties as of 10 p.m. Thursday, officials said.

Tomblin said the state of emergency would stay until the state Department of Health and Human Resources, the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the water company say the water is safe.

“It could take some time, they can’t tell us how long it will take, to get the system flushed clean because some of these pipes go out as far as 60 miles.” He said.

Freedom Industries

The Chemical leak from Freedom Industries occurred upstream of the intake at the Kanawha Valley water treatment—the largest in West Virginia—and has resulted in a tap water ban for at least 100,000 homes and businesses, or about 300,000 people, said West Virginia American Water.

Freedom Industries describes itself as “a full service producer of specialty chemicals for the mining, steel, and cement industries.” The company was founded in 1986 in Charleston, WV, according to the company website.

Water to be available through the county offices of emergency services

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin this evening issued a State of Emergency for Boone, Cabell, Clay, Jackson, Kanawha, Lincoln, Logan, Putnam, and Roane counties.  This declaration follows a notice from West Virginia American Water Company that its water supply had become contaminated.  Residents served by Lincoln PSD, Queen Shoals PSD, Reamer PSD, City of Culloden PSD, and City of Hurricane PSD are also affected.

“West Virginians in the affected service areas are urged NOT to use tap water for drinking, cooking, washing or bathing,” Gov. Tomblin said.  “Right now, our priorities are our hospitals, nursing homes, and schools.  I’ve been working with our National Guard and Office of Emergency Services in an effort to provide water and supplies through the county emergency services offices as quickly as possible.”

A Rally Against Mass Surveillance

Posted by feww on October 26, 2013

The NSA is spying on everyone, and they are NOT doing so in the interest of “national security”

The rally organizers and attendees should demand to know on whose behalf NSA is spying.

-oOo-

About the Rally

The NSA is spying on everyone’s personal communications. It’s operating without any meaningful oversight.

On October 26th, the 12th anniversary of the signing of the USA Patriot Act, we’re holding the largest rally yet against NSA surveillance. We’ll be handing more than a half-million petitions to Congress to remind them that they work for us — and we won’t tolerate mass surveillance any longer.

A stellar group of whistleblowers, activists, researchers and others from both sides of the political spectrum will be speaking at this historic event.

NZ Govt and Google Buried Quake Warnings

Posted by feww on February 22, 2011

New Zealand Quake Update

Why Did New Zealand Govt and Google Bury Specific Quake Warnings?

FIRE-EARTH Blog has been posting specific quake warning for New Zealand Region since 2008, all of which have been buried by New Zealand govt and Google. [See links below.]

Latest NZ Earthquake Update and WARNINGS:

  • NZ’s Prime Minister John Key has confirmed at least 65 deaths in the Christchurch as a result of today’s earthquakes. “We may be witnessing New Zealand’s darkest day,” he told TVNZ.
  • Mayor Bob Parker has said the death toll could quite possibly double.
  • Many foreign tourists may be among the casualties.
  • It’s unlikely that the secretive government would ever reveal the exact number of fatalities and casualties.
  • Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker said up to 200 people are trapped in buildings across the city.
  • Many people are still reported as missing.
  • The power is cut off and phone lines are down throughout Christchurch, as the authorities evacuate the central areas of the city because of the widespread damage to buildings, roads and other infrastructure.
  • Water supplies have been cut-off/disrupted throughout most of the city
  • Many roads have been severely damaged and there are reports of widespread liquefaction and flooding.
  • The epicenter was close to the town of Lyttelton (population: 3,000), about 12km SE of Christchurch and described as “unlivable” by a TV reporter.
  • Sixty percent of buildings in Lyttelton’s main street  were destroyed, the chief fire officer has reported.
  • In the central suburb of Waltham, as well as several other areas, the ground was “completely liquefied” following  the quakes.
  • The quakes have had a knock-on effect on air travel, with all commercial flights throughout New Zealand grounded.
  • Today’s earthquakes, so far,  were the second deadliest wave to strike New Zealand since a 1931 M7.8 earthquake killed 256 people in city of Napier, Hawke’s Bay region.
  • Three significant shocks have struck the area, as of posting, with the most recent one registering 5.5Mw at 01:50UTC.
  • Technically, larger shocks could strike anytime, FIRE-EARTH believes.

  • FIRE-EARTH has identified a number of potential seismic ‘Ground Zeros,’ areas prone to devastation, in the New Zealand Region, some of which coincide with population centers. New Zealand government has a moral responsibility and legal duty to relocate their people from those areas.

  • Christchurch could become unlivable in the near future.

Google reveals fraction of govt censorship requests

Posted by feww on April 21, 2010

What about Google’s ‘insider’ censorship?

Most (99.99%) of Internet censorship is carried out by Google on its own accord and for monetary gains!

Google reveals a tiny fraction of government data requests and censorship

blocked-by-google-s
Note: The above image incorporates the Google logo, which is a trade mark of that disgraceful corporation.

Google has released some details of how often it surrenders user data to various governments or censors information on their behalf.

Google’s list:

  1. Brazil  government (3,663 data requests)
  2. United States (3,580)
  3. The UK (1,166)
  4. India (1,061)

This partial revelation follows Google’s move to pull its search engine out of China over disagreement with the Chinese government concerning the mechanics (not the principles) of online censorship issues.

Google refused to provide statistics on the extent of its censorship in China, calling them “state secrets.”

Google says it also removed content on behalf of various governments as follows (July and December 2009):

  • Brazil (291)
  • Germany (188)
  • India (142)
  • US (123)

“Google’s numbers are not nearly as transparent as they could be,” said Tom Krazit of CNET.com.

“The tool doesn’t break out the data for the number of times Google complied or refused requests for information on individuals. It does say how often—in general—it complies with takedown requests, but does not provide specifics.”

The “tool” [more like bit] is available at www.google.com/governmentrequests

So, what’s the issue? Isn’t Google coming clean with its censorship data?

Far from it. What Google has been doing can be classified as a variation of “insider dealing” concerning the dissemination of information. Google’s suppression of critical information is financially motivated. The company’s practice of censorship is meant to assist and protect its partners and clients.

Most (99.99%) of Internet censorship is carried out by Google on its own accord and for monetary gains!

Who are Google’s partners? The multinationals, national corporations, and even smaller companies, AS WELL AS government agencies like NASA,USGS, NOAA and others in the U.S. [also many organizations in other countries] in which Google has a direct financial stake.

Google has but one motto: “Take Their Money!”

If any information posted on the Internet conflicts in the slightest way with Google’s ability to maximize its global financial interests, that information is suppressed in a number of ways including by filtering, hiding, burying and ultimately removing from Internet.

How do we know this?

Fire-Earth closely monitors the traffic to blog posts, and notes large anomalies with the entries criticizing Google, its partners and clients. Those posts  invariably become “invisible.” See also:  Google’s Top 10 List of ‘Holy Cows’ and California Earthquake Forecast – Update 4.

Google lands in brown goo again!

Internet Mafia Provokes the Ire of EU Firms

The European Commission is investigating complaints against Google, the Internet Mafia admitted.

Three companies have complained about Google’s mafia-like activities:  UK price comparison site Foundem, French legal search engine ejustice.fr, and Microsoft’s Ciao.

Recommended Google Logo of the Day.

Google’s senior competition lawyer Julia Holtz said the internet Goliath was “confident” it did not break European competition law, BBC reported.

Foundem says its site is downgraded in Google’s search results, a practice with which  Fire-Earth (this blog) is all too familiar.

“Foundem… argues that our algorithms demote their site in our results because they are a vertical search engine and so a direct competitor to Google,” Google said.

“Ejustice.fr’s complaint seems to echo these concerns.”

The complaint regarding price comparison site Ciao, which Microsoft bought in 2008, concerns Google’s standard terms and conditions.

Microsoft initially took its case to the German competition authority, but Google said it had now been transferred to Brussels.

“Although we haven’t been notified yet by the commission, we do believe it’s natural for competition officials to look at online advertising given how important it is to the development of the internet and the dominance of one player.

“In the meantime, we continue to co-operate with the German government’s investigation into complaints brought by Ciao.” BBC quoted A Microsoft spokesman as saying.

Meanwhile, the European Commission has issued a statement confirming that it had received three complaints against Google, which it was investigating, though not formally.

“As is usual when the Commission receives complaints, it informed Google earlier this month and asked the company to comment on the allegations. The Commission closely cooperates with the national competition authorities,” the statement said.

Another recommended Google logo.

‘Immediate threat’

Google’s attorney, J. Holtz,  has reportedly said that the Commission had contacted the company about the complaints.

“Though each case raises slightly different issues, the question they ultimately pose is whether Google is doing anything to choke off competition or hurt our users and partners,” she said.

“This is not the case.” She reportedly added.

Foundem complaint said that Google had the “ability to arbitrarily penalize rivals and systematically favour its own services.”

It said Google’s Universal Search was a “mechanism for automatically inserting its own services into prominent positions within its natural search results” and “poses an immediate threat to healthy competition and innovation.” BBC reported.

Foundem founder was quoted as saying that  Google had an “unprecedented” amount of control over its market.

Original report: Google faces European competition inquiry

Meanwhile, An Italian court has convicted three Google executives in a trial over a video showing a teenager with Down’s Syndrome being bullied.

Google China Censorship

If there isn’t a law that specifically allows us to break up Google, Inc into smaller companies to prevent suppression of information, then we must create new laws that do so!

California Fires: Not Hard to Understand!

Posted by feww on July 31, 2008

“A Conspiracy Against the Public”: For political reasons, Google has blocked this post. [Aug 14, 2008]

Wildfires are big business. Big business is good business!

Here’s how the formula works:

1. Calif residents, instead of being discouraged (for obvious reasons), are encouraged to build their dream homes at the edge of wildlands, areas prone to wildfire. More than 1 million homes (about 61% of all new housing) built in California, Oregon and Washington between 1990 to 2000 were erected at the edge of fire-prone wildlands, a University of Wisconsin study reported.

2. Brush clearing and creation of firebreaks are frowned upon because they are regarded as “too expensive!” The “excess fuel” which is not cleared away [or allowed to burn out the previous years] increases the danger to life and property, which continue being erected on ill-situated sites. The 2003 fires which extended from the Mexican border to Los Angeles suburbs, claimed about 20 lives, including one firefighter, and about 2,750 homes and other building. Official damage estimates ranged from $1.25 to $2 billion, making the fires the most expensive in state history. Now, they’ve got everyone by the short and curlies [soon their hearts and minds will follow!]

3. Thus a mini cold hot war is declared [an “arms race” with forest fires,] and the stakes are upped each year.

4. But what ever happened to President [sic] Bush’s Healthy Forests Initiative (HFI)? Wasn’t it meant to stop the wildfires? Using the hype of the 2002 fire season, the Bush administration proposed a series of drastic administrative changes to the way our National Forests are managed. Combined, these proposals will give free reign to the timber industry across National Forests under the guise of “fuel reduction.” The President’s ill-named “Healthy Forests Initiative” will do little to protect communities and homes from forest fires, instead this sweeping initiative is concentrated on decreasing public involvement, reducing environmental protection and increasing access to our National Forests and other federal lands for timber companies.

gwbushfire
Hiding behind the Smokescreen! President [sic] George W. Bush signs the Healthy Forests Restoration Act of 2003 at the Department of Agriculture Wednesday, December 3, 2003. White House photo by Tina Hager.

Bottom Line?

5. Wildfires are big business. You can’t afford to upset them. There must be enough fuel left in the wildlands each year for the business to remain profitable!

“In Southern California, clearing out the ‘excess fuels’ that have resulted from past fire suppression, and reconfiguring the landscape to create more firebreaks and other barriers to fire, would have been expensive but feasible,” said Robert Nelson, professor of environmental policy at the University of Maryland.

“So why didn’t government take effective management and policy action to reduce fire risks before total disaster struck?” Nelson asked. “Leaving aside the individual human tragedies, the costs [of 2003 wildfires] would certainly have been less than the $2 billion (and climbing) that is now projected in terms of fire-fighting costs and lost property values.”

Now, that wasn’t so difficult to understand, was it?

Google Censorship is a Flagrant Violation of Our Freedom of Speech!

Freedom of speech is being able to speak freely without censorship. The United States Constitution protects opinions under inalienable 1st Amendment free speech rights.

Google Censorship Violates the US Constitution and International Law

The Human Rights of an Octogenarian Chinese Woman

Google has effectively blocked the following posts from its search engines:

Google Censorship is a Flagrant Violation of Our Freedom of Speech!

Freedom of speech is being able to speak freely without censorship. The United States Constitution protects opinions under inalienable 1st Amendment free speech rights.

The right to freedom of speech is also guaranteed under international law through numerous human-rights instruments, notably under Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights.

How much longer is Google allowed to continue its censorship in violation of the United States Constitution and the international law?
