“Days of torrential rain in central China’s Hunan Province raised the water level of the Xiangjiang River, a major tributary of the Yangtze River, to exceed its record flood level Sunday morning [The water level in the section of the river in Changsha, capital of Hunan, reached 39.21 meters surpassing previous record set by a massive flood in 1998.]”

“Hunan has experienced severe flooding after ongoing torrential rain over the last 10 days. Since June 22, flooding has inundated parts of several cities, forced 311,300 people to evacuate, damaged 295,160 hectares of crops and destroyed 6,369 houses,” Xinhua reported.

The latest round of torrential rains lashed 832 towns in southern and eastern Hunan province, and affected more than 230,000 people in 20 counties and districts in Guangxi province, leaving several dead or missing.

Floods Affect Millions in China, Myanmar, Pakistan, Vietnam

Hundreds of thousands of people left homeless

China
Flooring and landslides triggered by extreme rain events have severely affected more than one million people in south China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

“Continuous rainfall has flooded 31 counties under 11 cities, with two people missing and 53,100 evacuated as of 4 p.m. Friday, according to the regional civil affairs department,” said a report.

The extreme weather events have damaged about 38,000 hectares of crops and destroyed 2,016 houses, with direct economic losses estimated at 343 million yuan (55 million U.S. dollars), said the report.

Myanmar

Up to 30 people killed by flooding and landslides.
About 120,000 severely affected.
About 525,000 acres of paddy fields have been flooded.
Several towns and villages completely submerged by floodwater.
“In Sagaing and Mandalay regions as well as Kachin and Shan states, the floods destroyed more than 17,000 houses, affecting nearly 100,000 people,” the official China news agency reported.

Pakistan

Floods have killed dozen of people in Pakistan and left about a third of a million severely affected. Hundreds of villages have been completely inundated, with thousands of homes damaged or destroyed.

Afghanistan
“Heavy rains and flood hit Kofab district last night and besides killing six people including women and children also washed away or badly damaged more than 120 houses there,” said a government official..

Vietnam

Floods and landslides triggered by extrme rain events in northern Vietnam have left dozens of people dead, and caused severe damage to property and public infrastructure, especially in Quang Ninh province, about 120 km east of the capital Hanoi, reports said.

Hundred Thousand Homes Destroyed or Damaged in China Rainstorms

Extreme Rain Events (EREs) continue to batter large parts of China, said the country’s National Meteorological Center.

Rainstorms since June 18 have left dozens of people dead or missing, reported Xinhua.

“The Ministry of Civil Affairs said that 4.9 million people in the provinces of Fujian, Guizhou, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi, Sichuan and Yunnan as well as Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Chongqing Municipality had been adversely affected by the rain as of 11 a.m. on Sunday, with 337,000 people relocated and 115,000 in urgent need of basic necessities.”

Hunan Province

In Hunan Province alone, as of June 21, flooding had affected about 3 million people, leaving 171,000 homeless, at least seven dead and four missing across 10  cities and 47 counties, according to the civil affairs authority.

Jiangxi Province [as of June 21, 2014]

“Jiangxi’s local bureau of civil affairs reported that at least five people had died across eight cities and 43 counties in the province as of 10 a.m. on Saturday. Downpours have swept the province since Wednesday,” said the report.

About 789,000 people have so far been affected, and 123,000 relocated.

“The rainstorms, which have caused the collapse of or substantial damage to 4,000 houses and affected 63,100 hectares of crops, have led to direct economic losses of 530 million yuan (84.85 million U.S. dollars) in Jiangxi,” Xinhua reported.

 Guangxi Province [as of June 21, 2014]

Severe weather have affected at least 118,700 people, leaving 2,341 homeless and  at least  two dead, as of 3 p.m.  Saturday, according to the regional civil affairs department.

Deadly Rainstorms, Severe Floods Affecting Millions in Central and southern China

 “Yellow Alerts” for rainstorm have been renewed for Hunan, Jiangxi, Anhui, Zhejiang, Fujian, Yunnan and Guangdong provinces, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Tibet Autonomous Region, and Shanghai, said the National Meteorological Center warning that torrential rains were expected to continue.

Millions of people are affected, more than 300,000 left homeless and dozens are dead or missing, as rainstorm continue to batter large swathes of central, east  and southern China.

Hunan Province

In Hunan Province, flooding has affected about 3 million people, leaving about 171,000 homeless, at least seven dead and four missing across 10  cities and 47 counties, according to the civil affairs authority.

“The rainstorms also caused severe damage to 9,700 houses and 122,700 hectares of crops, and direct economic losses of 1.57 billion yuan in the province,” said the report.

Jiangxi Province

“Jiangxi’s local bureau of civil affairs reported that at least five people had died across eight cities and 43 counties in the province as of 10 a.m. on Saturday. Downpours have swept the province since Wednesday,” said the report.

Here’s what the China “Frankenstein” looks like:

Hundreds of troops, police and rescue workers are shoring up dams which might burst under torrential rain that has already flooded an area of about 24,000 square kilometers, including homes, businesses and farmlands.

The damage:

• Floods have killed about 180 people so far in Guangdong
• Another 60 people are missing
• More rain is expected in the annual flood season
• Six reservoirs are in “danger of bursting” in southern Guangxi region
• About 1.7 million people have been evacuated in nine southern provinces since the start of the flood season earlier this month.
• Floodwater has collapsed about 150,000 homes,
• About 2.4 million hectares (~ 6 million acres) of crops have been damaged or destroyed
• The mounting economic losses already exceed $4 billion

All of this comes in addition to the soaring food prices the have already plagued China, record snowstorms last winter and, of course, the Sichuan earthquake which killed about 70,000 people and left five million homeless. Serious danger of epidemics in the soaring summer temperatures looms.

Droughts, floods and other human-enhanced disasters throughout China are nothing new, of course, but their frequency and intensity this year are alarming experts.

The biggest disaster yet to strike China in 2008 may prove to be a major drought causing water shortages throughout the country later in the summer.

It’s as if nature is mad at China: Drop the Olympics, or have your annual quota of H2O now!
