Gulf of Mexico: 10cm layer of dead animals and oil

NO SIGN OF SEALIFE

Deepwater Horizon oil leak “devastated” life on and near the seafloor:  Marine scientist

A research submersible discovered a 10cm thick layer of dead animals and oil in places, said Samantha Joye, a marine scientist  at the University of Georgia.

It’s implausible that the Gulf of Mexico will recover by the end of 2012, she said disputing BP’s assessment, a report said.

“Knocking these animals out of the food chain will, in time, affect species relevant to fisheries.”

Professor Joye told the American Association for the Advancement of Science conference in Washington that it may be a decade before the full effects on the Gulf are apparent.

She said they concluded the layers had been deposited between June and September 2010 after it was discovered that no sign of sealife from samples taken in May remained.

Professor Joye and her team, using the Alvin submersible,  examined the bottom-most layer of the water close to the well head, known as the benthos.

“The impact on the benthos was devastating,” she told BBC News.

“Filter-feeding organisms, invertebrate worms, corals, sea fans – all of those were substantially impacted – and by impacted, I mean essentially killed.

“Another critical point is that detrital feeders like sea cucumbers, brittle stars that wander around the bottom, I didn’t see a living (sea cucumber) around on any of the wellhead dives. They’re typically everywhere, and we saw none.” More…

‘Mystery Spill’ off Barataria Bay, GOM

Posted by feww on January 8, 2011

WHAT’S BREWIN’?

Mystery spill-GOMEX off Barataria Bay

Gulf of Mexico 25 miles south of Barataria Bay 2011-Jan-06

On January 6th NESDIS provided NOAA Emergency Response Division with a satelitte analysis showing an anomaly consistent with an oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico located at 28deg 54′ 28″N, 89deg 49′ 23″W, or about 25 miles SSE of Barataria Bay, LA. A report from BOEMRE confirms that an oil slick has been reported at that location, so confidence is high. USCG Sector NOLA/Morgan City have been provided this information, weather, and an initial trajectory analysis. The initial trajectory indicates that winds and currents should keep the oil offshore so that it is not expected to be a threat to land at least throught the coming weekend. For additional information, contact Jim Jeasonne at jim.jeansonne@noaa.gov or 206-276-5308.

Massive Coral Die-Off

Posted by feww on November 7, 2010

Massive deep-sea coral die-off found near BP oil disaster source in GOM

Large colonies of bottom-dwelling coral were found covered in a black substance, most probably crude oil, at a depth of about 1,400m (4,600 feet) near the damaged Macondo wellhead, NOAA scientists said.

“Corals do die, but you don’t see them die all at once,” said cruise lead scientist Charles Fisher of Penn State University. “This … indicates a recent catastrophic event,” he told National Geographic News.

“The proximity of the site to the disaster, the depth of the site, the clear evidence of recent impact, and the uniqueness of the observations all suggest that the impact we have found is linked to the exposure of this community to either oil, dispersant, extremely depleted oxygen, or some combination of these or other water-borne effects resulting from the spill,” Fisher said.

Gulf Oil Disaster: “It’s a war”

Posted by feww on June 16, 2010

Obama says it’s a “battle”

Obama expects the enemy that started assaulting our shores and our citizens” help us win the battle!!

“… the battle we’re waging against an oil spill that is assaulting our shores and our citizens.” Obama said.

Would you buy a used car from this guy?

“And in the coming weeks and days, these efforts should capture up to 90 percent of the oil leaking out of the well.  This is until the company finishes drilling a relief well later in the summer that’s expected to stop the leak completely.”

BP Oil Spill: Turtles Are Dying

Posted by feww on May 19, 2010

More Turtles Are Dying Than Before Oil Leak: Experts

At least 156  dead or dying sea turtles have been found along the U.S. Gulf Coast since April 30, some 10 days after the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded.

This number of dead or dying turtles that have been washed up along the coasts of Alabama, Florida Louisiana and Mississippi is greater than the number of dead and injured  turtles that that we expect to see this time of the year, said Dr. Michael Ziccardi, a veterinarian and  director of the Oiled Wildlife Care Network in California.

“The toll among sea turtles has been steadily rising since the deep-sea well ruptured last month, and the stranding count began to reach an unusually high level in the past week,” Ziccardi was reported as saying.

In Gulf of Mexico: A Waiting Disaster

Moderators introduced the Thunder Horse platform, the world’s largest semisubmersible facility, as another likely candidate that might cause another oil spill mega disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.

Which of the Gulf of Mexico’s Deepwater Wells Would Leak Next?

Located 150 miles (241 kilometers) southeast of New Orleans in Mississippi Canyon Block 778 in a water depth of approximately 6,050 feet (1,844 meters), the Thunder Horse platform is the world’s largest semisubmersible facility. British Petroleum received approval from the Minerals Management Service to debottleneck the topside production facilities to 275,000 barrels of oil and 220 million standard cubic feet of natural gas per day. As of March 20, 2009, production was approximately 260,000 barrels of oil and 210.5 million standard cubic feet of natural gas per day from seven wells. The Thunder Horse Field is the largest producer in the Gulf of Mexico. (Image courtesy of BP America Inc.). Source: DOI, MMS Report. Mississippi Canyon Block 778 could turn out to be another “Challenger” of deepwater oil production.

The Atlantis

Blog Moderators have since learned that the U.S. government has decided to investigate another big BP oil rig, the Atlantis.

Atlantis PQ is believed to be a BP plc/BHP Billiton joint venture deepwater semi-submersible oil platform which is located over the Green Canyon Atlantis Oil Field in Gulf of Mexico, about 300 km (185 mi) south of New Orleans.

The Atlantis PQ oil and gas production platform is the  deepest moored oil and gas extraction facility in the world producing about 200,000bpd.  BP is the majority shareholder with 56 percent of the oil field while BHP owns the remaining 44 percent. Growing Oil Slick in the Gulf of Mexico

Nearly a month after a deadly explosion at the Deepwater Horizon oil rig, the damaged well on the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico continued to spill oil. In the weeks since the accident occurred, the oil slick has periodically drifted northeast toward the Mississippi Delta and reached the the Chandeleur Islands. On May 17, 2010, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired this natural-color image, a large patch of oil was visible near the site of the accident, and a long ribbon of oil stretched far to the southeast. Gulf of Mexico receives its regular ration of oil spill

Posted by feww on October 22, 2009

Tanker collision near Texas spills oil into Gulf

About 20.000 gallons of the fuel were spilled into the Gulf of Mexico after a crude oil tanker collided with a service vessel in the Gulf of Mexico near Texas, the U.S. Coast Guard said on Wednesday.

“The accident occurred in rough seas late Tuesday after the tanker finished receiving crude oil from a supertanker too large to enter port 46 miles southeast of Galveston. Ship-to-ship oil transfers, called lightering , are common and often involve a third vessel servicing the operation.” Reuters reported.

The 820-foot (250-meter) Liberian-flagged, Russian-operated Krymsk, collided with the 166-foot lightering service vessel AET Endeavor, after the Krymsk had finished taking Arabian crude oil from a larger ship, the Vega Star.

A pierced fuel tank  caused the oil spill, believed to be No. 6 bunker fuel, officials said.

The tanker was carrying a cargo of more than 70,000 metric tons of crude, which escaped damage [this time,] a spokesman for Krymsk operator Novorossiysk was reported as saying.

Endeavor, owned by American Eagle Tankers, was not seriously damaged, reports said.

Summary!

Krymsk, a Liberian-flagged tanker, operated by Russian Novorossiysk, after lightering Arabian crude oil from a supertanker, Vega Star, too large to enter port near Galveston, Texas, collided with one of its service ships spilling bunker fuel into the giant runoff and tailing pond south of Texas, aka the Gulf of Mexico.

Meanwhile the magnitude of the Australian ecological disaster, the oil spill in Timor Sea, grows daily.
