NY, MA, ME, CT, NH and RI declare states of emergency, as snowstorm intensifies
The governors of New York, Massachusetts, Maine, Connecticut, New Hampshire and Rhode Island have declared states of emergency, as of posting, and urged people to stay indoors as blizzard slammed into NE United States on Friday.
- Blizzard warnings are in effect for much of the coastal sections of the northeast, from Newark New Jersey/New York City northward to southern Maine, National Weather Service (NWS) reported.
- Winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories are in effect for much of the northeast from eastern Pennsylvania north and eastward into Maine. (NWS)
- Coastal flood warnings are in effect for coastal areas in southern Delaware as well as southeast New Jersey. (NWS)
- About 2 feet (60cm) of snow could blanket Boston area, with some places receiving up to 30 inches, forecasters have warned.
- Up to 4,000 flights have already been canceled and many more affected.
- Massachusetts and Connecticut have banned most car travel starting Friday afternoon.
- Amtrak suspended railroad service between New York, Boston and points north, reports said.
- “Many of the same communities that were inundated by Hurricane Sandy’s tidal surge just about 100 days ago are likely to see some moderate coastal flooding this evening,” said NY mayor.
- “This is a very large and powerful storm, however we are encouraged by the numbers of people who stayed home today,” said Boston Mayor.
- Many of non-essential government workers have been ordered to stay home.
Widespread Significant Impacts Developing from Nor’easter: NWS
A significant nor’easter continues to bring crippling impacts to portions of the Northeast. Moderate to heavy snow is expected to continue across Pennsylvania, western New York and much of New England before tapering off by Saturday afternoon. Some locations are expected to see snowfall in excess of two feet. Coastal flooding is expected on the Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts coastlines.
