Disasters Displace 3 Percent of World Population in 7 Years

One person displaced by a disaster every second, while one in every 122 humans is a refugee!

An estimated one person has been displaced by a disaster every second since 2008, with 19.3 million people forced to flee their homes in 2014 alone.

In 2014, 17.5 million people were forced to flee their homes due to disasters caused by extreme  weather events such as storms and flooding, while 1.7 million by geophysical hazards, especially earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, said  the Internal Displacement Monitoring Center (IDMC) of the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) in its global report released this week.

The report argues that these drivers are increasing the number of people becoming displaced, and the risk that their displacement becomes a long-term problem. Today, the likelihood of being displaced by a disaster is 60% higher than it was four decades ago, and an analysis of 34 cases reveals that disaster displacement can last for up to 26 years.

People in both rich and poor countries can be caught in protracted, or long-term, displacement. In the US, over 56,000 people are still in need of housing assistance following Hurricane Sandy in 2012, and 230,000 people have been unable to establish new homes in Japan following the 2011 earthquake, tsunami and nuclear accident.

Disasters displaced more than 19.3 million people in 100 countries last year, according to the NRC report.

• Since 2008, an average of 26.4 million people have been displaced by disasters each year—equivalent to one person displaced every second.
• Asia, home to 60% of the world’s population, and with 16.7 million people displaced, accounted for 87 per cent of the global total in 2014.
• China, India and the Philippines experienced the highest levels of displacement in absolute terms, both in 2014 and for the 2008 to 2014 period.
• Displacements of fewer than 100,000 people made up 95.4 per cent of the events recorded in 2014, but only 17 percent of the total number displaced.
• Disasters caused by extreme weather events accounted for 86 percent of all displacements  in the 7-year report period (2008 to 2014), with the remaining 14 percent being due to geophysical events, such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
• In 2014, Europe experienced double its average level of displacement for the past seven years. 190,000 people were displaced in 2014, mostly by flood disasters in the Balkans.

Japan’s triple disasters, Tōhoku earthquake, the massive tsunami and the nuclear meltdowns, forced more than 470,000 people to flee their homes, and four years later about 230,000 are still displaced. [The monkey government of warmongering Shinzo Abe is more interested in throwing obscene amounts of money at the arms industry, instead of building new homes for its displaced and traumatized people.] “The mental and physical health of IDPs has also deteriorated. A 2015 survey of evacuees revealed that many from both inside and outside official evacuation zones were suffering from sleeping disorders, anxiety, loneliness and depression. Fukushima is the only prefecture where the number of deaths resulting from health issues and suicides related to the disaster has exceeded the toll from the direct impacts of the earthquake and tsunami.”

World at War: One in Every 122 Humans is a Refugee

UNHCR’s annual Global Trends Report: World at War, released on June 18, 2015 said that worldwide displacement in 2014 was at the highest level ever recorded.

An astounding 59.5 million people, a population the size of Canada and Australia combined, were forcibly displaced at the end of 2014, compared to 51.2 million a year earlier and 37.5 million ten years ago.

Most aid organizations, which at any rate only pass on only about FIVE percent of all donations received, run huge cash deficits because of their overheads, especially 6-figure wages to their executives,  and have to pay off their debts before worrying about mundane things like looking after the injured, starved and homeless victims of disasters.

In 2002, the Better Business Bureau temporarily stripped the American Red Cross of its status as one of the nation’s best-run charities while it investigated complaints that the Red Cross mismanaged the $850 million it raised for victims of the September 11 attacks.

Red Cross is now fighting a public records request for information on how it raised and spent money after major disasters caused by superstorm Sandy.

Just how badly does the American Red Cross want to keep secret how it raised and spent over $300 million after Hurricane Sandy?

The charity has hired a fancy law firm to fight a public request we filed with New York state, arguing that information about its Sandy activities is a “trade secret.”

The Red Cross’ “trade secret” argument has persuaded the state to redact some material, though it’s not clear yet how much since the documents haven’t yet been released.

As we’ve reported, the Red Cross releases few details about how it spends money after big disasters. That makes it difficult to figure out whether donor dollars are well spent.

The Red Cross did give some information about Sandy spending to New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, who had been investigating the charity. But the Red Cross declined our request to disclose the details.

Recurring drought worsening chronic food insecurity in Haiti

Drought has killed crops in Haiti’s poorest region, pushing the people even closer to the margins of survival.

At least 43 percent of households in Haiti’s northwest suffer from food insecurity, compared to a national average of about 30 percent, according to Government statistics.

More than 1.5 million people continue to face severe food insecurity in Haiti and about 82,000 children under five are malnourished, according to the UNOCHA.

The worsening disaster is caused by drought and the impact of hurricanes ISSAC and SANDY, which battered the country last year, said UNOCHA spokesperson.

SANDY struck Haiti in October leaving a trail of destruction and severely damaging the economy.

Six U.S. Fisheries to Receive Disaster Relief

Fishery Disasters caused by tsunami,  river flood, drought … and Hurricane Sandy

Six fisheries across the U.S. that were declared fishery disasters in 2012 and 2013 will receive $75 million in disaster relief funds, announced NOAA.

The allocations from the disaster relief fund will go to

• Commercial fisheries in American Samoa (damaged by the tsunami of 2009)
• Commercial fisheries in Mississippi (affected by the Mississippi River flood of 2011)
• The New England multispecies groundfish fishery for the 2013 season
• Alaska’s Chinook salmon fishery for 2011 and 2012 (near collapses)
• The Florida oyster fishery in the Gulf of Mexico (damaged by  drought in 2012)
• Fisheries in New York and New Jersey (destroyed or damaged by Hurricane Sandy in 2012)

Okinawa Battered by 2nd Typhoon in 24 Hrs

Okinawa and Miyako Islands battered by Typhoon FITOW Followed by Typhoon DANAS

FITOW uprooted trees and knocked down utility posts, tearing rooftops and causing blackouts of thousands of homes in Miyakojima city; however, the full extent of damaged caused by Typhoon DANAS was not known, as of posting.

Okinawa Island almost bore the full brunt of Cat 4 Typhoon DANAS, several hours ago.

DANAS is a “heat-seeking,” “custom-made” typhoon in FIRE-EARTH parlance, “designed” to impact the full length of Japan islands, and at this stage of its life it looks fully capable of causing damage comparable only to Hurricane SANDY. We’ll see!

Location and Impact Forecast

DANAS was near 630 km SSW of Fukuoka, Kyushu, at 13:00UTC on October 7, 2013.

The typhoon is expected to dump as much as 200 mm of rain on Japan’s Amami region and southern Kyushu and 150 mm on Okinawa and northern Kyushu by Tuesday morning, according to local reports.

Christie Declares State of Emergency as Fire Destroys Boardwalk

Fire Destroys New Jersey Shore Boardwalk, Dozens of Businesses

New Jersey Gov. Christie declared a state of emergency on Thursday as fire crews worked to contain a massive blaze that has ravaged a large section of the boardwalk along the New Jersey Shore, devouring dozens of nearby businesses, according to reports.

Hundreds of fire crews have been deployed to tackle the blaze in the Seaside Heights area which became a six-alarm fire in less than two hours, destroying large sections of a landmark that was recently restored following the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy.

“I feel like I want to throw up… After all the effort and time and resources that we’ve put in to help the folks of Seaside Park and Seaside Heights rebuild, it’s just unthinkable.” WCBS quoted Christie as saying.

The massive blaze began in Kohr’s Frozen Custard near the boardwalk in Seaside Park, and rapidly spread over seven blocks. About 50 businesses were destroyed, said NJ.com.

Active or Extremely Active 2013 Atlantic Hurricane Season: NOAA

2013 Atlantic hurricane season could see up to 6 major hurricanes: NOAA CPC

The six-month hurricane season, which begins June 1, could see up to 20 named storms, of which 7 to 11 could become hurricanes, including as many as 6 major hurricanes, says NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center (CPC).

NOAA’s 2013 Atlantic Hurricane Season Outlook indicates that an above-normal season is most likely, with the possibility that the season could be very active. The outlook calls for a 70% chance of an above-normal season, a 25% chance of a near-normal season, and only a 5% chance of a below-normal season.

Summary of CPC Prediction for 2013 Atlantic Hurricane Season:

• 70% chance of an above-normal season
• 13-20 Named Storms (winds of 39 mph or higher)
• 7-11 Hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher)
• 3-6 Major Hurricanes ( Categories 3, 4 or 5; winds of 111 mph or higher)
• Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE) range of 120%-205%

Note: The official NHC 1981-2010 seasonal averages 12 named storms, 6 hurricanes, and 3 major hurricanes.

Climate factors that control Atlantic hurricane activity

According to NOAA/CPC, three climate factors strongly control Atlantic hurricane activity, which are expected to join forces to produce an active or extremely active 2013 hurricane season.

• The ongoing set of atmospheric conditions that have been producing increased Atlantic hurricane activity, which includes a strong west African monsoon, that is responsible for the ongoing era of high activity for Atlantic hurricanes that began in 1995

• Expected continuation of above-average sea surface temperatures (SSTs) across MDR, which includes the tropical Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea

• ENSO-neutral conditions in the tropical Pacific Ocean (i.e., no El Niño or La Niña); meaning El Niño is not expected to develop and suppress the hurricane season

NOAA’s 2013 Eastern Pacific Hurricane Season Outlook

• 55% chance of a below-normal season
• 35% chance of a near-normal season
• 10% chance of an above normal season

[The eastern Pacific hurricane region covers the eastern North Pacific Ocean east of 14:0oW and north of the equator.]

The outlook is based on the analysis and prediction of three climate signals:

• The ongoing climate conditions that have been associated with reduced eastern Pacific hurricane activity since 1995

• Expected ENSO-neutral conditions, meaning El Niño is not expected to develop and strengthen the seasonal activity,

• Expected near-average or below-average sea-surface temperatures in the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean.

NOAA estimates  a 70% chance of occurrence for each of the following ranges of activity in the 2013 season:

• 11-16 named storms,
• 5-8 hurricanes,
• 1-4 major hurricanes,
• An ACE range 60%-105% of the median.

Floods, storms and earthquakes forced 32.4 million people to flee their homes

At least 32.4 million people were forced to flee their homes in 2012 by floods, storms and earthquakes,  according to a new report released by the Internal Displacement Monitoring Center (IDMC).

• Asia and west and central Africa were the worst affected regions, however, at least 1.3 million were displaced in rich countries, with the USA particularly affected, said the report.

• “98% of all displacement in 2012 was related to climate- and weather-related events, with flood disasters in India and Nigeria accounting for 41% of global displacement in 2012. In India, monsoon floods displaced 6.9 million, and in Nigeria 6.1 million people were newly displaced. While over the past five years 81% of global displacement has occurred in Asia, in 2012 Africa had a record high for the region of 8.2 million people newly displaced, over four times more than in any of the previous four years.”

• United States was among the top ten countries with the highest levels of new displacement, with nearly one million people being forced to abandon their homes in 2012.

• Displacement in poorer countries accounted for 98% of the global five year total, the report said.

• “In countries already facing the effects of conflict and food insecurity such as in Nigeria, Pakistan, and South Sudan, we observe a common theme” says Clare Spurrell, Chief Spokesperson for IDMC. “Here, vulnerability to disaster triggered by floods is frequently further compounded by hunger, poverty and violence; resulting in a ‘perfect storm’ of risk factors that lead to displacement.″

The vast majority of this displacement (98 per cent in 2012;
83 per cent over five years) was triggered by climate- and

Disaster declared due to drought, derecho, extreme weather, Hurricane Sandy, snowstorm, nor’easter

U.S. Disasters 2013: Drought, derecho, hail, excessive heat, excessive rain, flash flooding, Hurricane Sandy, a snowstorm and a nor’easter

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has designated 21 counties in 4 states—New Jersey, Delaware,  New York, and Pennsylvania—as natural disaster areas, both primary and contiguous, due to damages and losses caused by the combined effects of drought, high winds (derecho), hail, excessive heat, excessive rain, flash flooding, Hurricane Sandy, a snowstorm and a nor’easter that occurred during the period of June 28 – November 8, 2012.

As of February 13, prior to the latest designations, about 980 counties, nearly a third of all U.S. counties, had been designated for 2013 crop disaster losses, USDA reported.

The governors of New York, Massachusetts, Maine, Connecticut, New Hampshire and Rhode Island have declared states of emergency, as of posting,  and urged people to stay indoors as blizzard slammed into NE United States on Friday.

• Blizzard warnings are in effect for much of the coastal sections of the northeast, from Newark New Jersey/New York City northward to southern Maine, National Weather Service (NWS) reported.

• Winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories are in effect for much of the northeast from eastern Pennsylvania north and eastward into Maine. (NWS)

• Coastal flood warnings are in effect for coastal areas in southern Delaware as well as southeast New Jersey. (NWS)

• About 2 feet (60cm) of snow could blanket Boston area, with some places receiving up to 30 inches, forecasters have warned.
• Up to 4,000 flights have already been canceled and many more affected.
• Massachusetts and Connecticut have banned most car travel starting Friday afternoon.
• Amtrak suspended railroad service between New York, Boston and points north, reports said.
• “Many of the same communities that were inundated by Hurricane Sandy’s tidal surge just about 100 days ago are likely to see some moderate coastal flooding this evening,” said NY mayor.
• “This is a very large and powerful storm, however we are encouraged by the numbers of people who stayed home today,” said Boston Mayor.
• Many of non-essential government workers have been ordered to stay home.

Widespread Significant Impacts Developing from Nor’easter: NWS

A significant nor’easter continues to bring crippling impacts to portions of the Northeast. Moderate to heavy snow is expected to continue across Pennsylvania, western New York and much of New England before tapering off by Saturday afternoon. Some locations are expected to see snowfall in excess of two feet. Coastal flooding is expected on the Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts coastlines.

Dept of Commerce declares fisheries disaster for N.Y. and N.J. in the aftermath of SANDY

“We are taking action because of the storm’s devastating impact on the people who live and work in coastal communities that were hit hard by Sandy.” Acting Secretary of Commerce said in a statement.

• In 2010 alone, New Jersey and New York commercial fisheries landed almost 190 million pounds of fish, valued at more than $210 million dollars.

Superstorm SANDY

Superstorm SANDY as it plowed into the U.S. Atlantic Coast. The superstorm caused much destruction across 15 states and cut power to at least 8.5 million customers affecting an estimated 65 million people.

Cyclone NILAM

• INDIA: Cyclone NILAM  brought heavy rain and a storm surge to southern India, destroying thousands of homes displacing 150,000 people.

• Sri Lanka. Flooding in Sri Lanka caused by the cyclone displaced about 70,000 others.
  • The storm left at least a dozen people dead and many injured in the region.

Superstorm SANDY dumps enough snow to keep your heads buried

The progress of collapse would be swift, cruel and unceremonious [“abrupt, brutal and grisly.”]

Superstorm SANDY

• Hurricane-force winds of up to 145 km/h (90MPH) were recorded as SANDY slammed into NJ shore.
• “The devastation is unthinkable,” New Jersey Governor said after viewing photos of the New Jersey coast. “The idea … that you see homes [ripped from their foundation and tossed] in the middle of Route 35 southbound and northbound is just unfathomable,” he told reporters.
• SANDY knocked out electricity to more 8 million homes and businesses [figure released by the U.S. Department of Energy,] affecting an estimated 65 million people across 17 states.
• “New Jersey, New York in particular have been pounded by this storm. Connecticut has taken a big hit,” said the Disaster President. “This storm is not yet over.”
• The White House has declared the States of New Jersey and New York as major disaster areas, having issued states of emergency declaration for  New Hampshire, Virginia, Delaware, West Virginia, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New Jersey, District of Colombia, New York, Massachusetts and Maryland.
• Thousands of homes and businesses have been inundated, many destroyed by flooding, high winds aor other storm related disasters.
• A large fire, possibly caused by downed powerlines, destroyed 80 – 100 homes in Breezy Point, on the Rockaway barrier island, in NYC’s borough of Queens, reports said.
• Garrett County in Maryland has reported  20 inches of icy snow.
• The storm reached as far inland as the state of Ohio.
• The massive storm has forced cancellation of at least 16,000 flights to and from the affected region thus far.
• “To describe it as looking like pictures we’ve seen of the end of World War Two is not overstating it. The area was completely leveled. Chimneys and foundations were all that was left of many of these homes,” New York Mayor  said.
• Blizzard warnings were issued by NWS for West Virginia, western Maryland, eastern Tennessee, eastern Kentucky and western North Carolina after  Sandy converged with a cold weather system.
• Storm surge buried about three-quarters of Hoboken [pop: ~50,000], NJ under several feet of water.
• Atlantic City remained in an official state of emergency, as of posting, with a 6 p.m.-to-6 a.m. curfew in effect.
• Death toll from SANDY has reached about 120, including 70 in the Caribbean and 20 in NYC [Massachusetts, Maryland, Connecticut, New Jersey, New York state, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and Toronto have reported up to 30 deaths due to the storm.]
• Pelting the region with hail, snow, and rain, SANDY “continued to whip southern Ontario with winds,” where a warning for gusts of up to 100 km/h remained in place, said a report.
• Meanwhile, the “Antichrist” and “Mammon” put campaigning on hold for a second day.

SANDY’s storm surge could be “life-threatening”: NHC

National Hurricane Center (NHC) has described the storm surge threat from Hurricane SANDY as “life-threatening,” ranking the surge and wave “destruction potential” for the hurricane alone, not including the combined force of the hybrid storm, which it could eventually become,  at 5.8 on a scale of 0 to 6.

• SANDY could be the largest storm ever to hit the United States, said NHC.
• The massive storm could affect tens of millions of people hundreds of miles along the Atlantic Coast.
• Some coastal parts of New York and New Jersey could experience surge and waves of up to 11 feet, judging by Hurricane SANDY’s size, said NHC.

• New York Mayor has ordered the evacuation of more than 375,000 people in low-lying areas.
• Some 50,000 people in Delaware and 30,000 in Atlantic City, N.J. have also been evacuated.
• At least 5,000 flights have been cancelled.
• Flooding caused by the storm surge is expected to be particularly severe because the storm’s arrival coincides with a full moon, which causes higher tides.
• Up to 284,000 residential properties valued at $88 billion could sustain damage from storm-surge flooding, according to risk analysts CoreLogic, Reuters reported.
• The massive storm has already claimed at least 66 lives in the Caribbean.
• The Disaster President has declared States of Emergency for New York and Massachusetts.
• States of emergency have also been declared by the governors in Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia and the District of Columbia.

• “The UN has reported that over 22,000 people were displaced in a week of renewed sectarian fighting between Buddhists and Muslims living on Myanmar’s west coast. The total number of displaced since violence erupted in June is now around 100,000 [with at least 200 dead or injured, and more than 3,000 homes destroyed,]” said a report.

• “More than 80,000 people in south China’s Hainan Province have been relocated following the arrival of Typhoon Son-Tinh, which has brought gales and downpours to the region since Saturday,” said a report.

SANDY prompts States of Emergency Along Atlantic Coast: “Frankenstorm” threatens the East Coast after killing dozens in the Caribbean

Hurricane SANDY, dubbed the “Frankenstorm,” which caused numerous deaths and large-scale destruction in the Caribbean, especially Cuba, has prompted governors in states along the Atlantic coast to declare states of emergency, issuing warnings and planning mass evacuations.

• Maryland, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia and the District of Columbia have declared states of emergency ahead of the storm’s arrival.
• SANDY has claimed dozens of lives in the Caribbean.
• The massive storm is expected to merge with at least two other weather systems that are moving out of the Eastern U.S. and become a “hybrid” super storm.

SANDY leaves at least two dozen people dead across the Caribbean

The deadly hurricane slammed into Cuba with 180kph winds, leaving behind a trail of destruction.

Santiago de Cuba, the country’s second largest city, took a direct hit from the Cat 3A hurricane, when the storm landed  early Thursday morning.

• “Everything is destroyed in Santiago [located about 470 miles SE of Havana; population of >500,000.] People are going to have to work very hard to recover,” a resident of the city, told Reuters.
• The deadly hurricane has reportedly destroyed or damaged many of the city’s 300,000 homes.
• A local TV reporter has described Santiago de Cuba as “a city without trees” after so many were uprooted by SANDY.
• As of 3:00am EDT, SANDY had claimed at least two dozen lives across the Caribbean.
• The hurricane could land along the Mid-Atlantic coast next week.
• Hurricane warnings, storm warnings and watches are in effect along the entire east coast of Florida and Mid-Atlantic coast, as of posting ( Updated Friday @ 9:30UTC ).

Australia

Far western portion of the Australian state of New South Wales (NSW) has been declared a disaster area after bushfires scorched 25,000 hectares of land  in less than a week, a report said.

Myanmar

State of Emergency has been declared  by the Myanmar government after five days of deadly violence between the Buddhists majority and Rohingya people, which have left about 100 dead and thousands of homes burned.

• This week’s clashed are said to be the worst since violence flared up in June, which left at least 80 people dead and up to a 100,000 forced out of their homes, after an alleged rape.
• Myanmar’s estimated 800,000 Rohingya, who are officially stateless, are one of the most persecuted minorities in the world, according to the U.N.
