Strong Earthquake Strikes Manipur Region, India

M6.7 strikes near Imphal, India

Centered at 24.834°N, 93.656°E the quake occurred at a depth of 55.0 km (34.2 mi), reported USGS/EHP.

The quake was felt as far away as Kathmandu in the NW, Kolkata in the SW, Coxs Bazar in the SSE, and Dibrugarth in the NNW’.

Strong Shaking = Radius of 200 – 250km

According to thed USGS/EHP model:

  • Estimated Fatalities: 100 – 1,000 (P = 33%)
  • Estimated Economic Losses: USD100 – 1,000 million (P = 35%)

Deadly Earthquake Strikes N. Afghanistan

UPDATE: The event posted earlier has been downgraded to a magnitudes 7.5Mw.

M7.5 earthquake strikes northern Afghanistan

The earthquake parameters may be subject to additional changes due to procedural issues at USGS/EHP.

Centered at 36.441°N 70.717°E, about 254km NNE of Kabul, the quake occurred at a depth of 212.5 km, USGS/EHP reported.


USGS has issued an “Orange” alert level for shaking-related fatalities. This means significant casualties are possible and the disaster is potentially widespread. Past events with this alert level have required a regional or national level response.

  • Scores of fatalities and hundreds of injuries have been reported in Afghanistan, India and Pakistan. Death toll is likely to rise.

Quake Destroys 3,000 Homes in China (Update)

M6.5 quake kills at least 6 people, injures dozens, destroys 3,000 houses

Centered at 37.6N, 78.2E the quake struck at a depth of about 10km, said China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC), reported Xinhua.

The quake occurred in Pishan County, northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, destroying about 3,000 homes and disrupting communications, said the report.

The main shock was followed by at least 4 significant aftershocks measuring between 4.4Mw and 4.8Mw, according to USGS/EHP, as of posting.

Other quakes most probably related to this event include:

  • M5.4, 22km ENE of Muzaffarabad, Pakistan 2015-07-02 0at 7:18:24 UTC depth=10.0km
  • M5.8, 246km E of Port Blair, India 2015-07-03 at 03:16:35 UTC depth=10.0km

Deadly Quake Prompts New Island to Rise Off Pakistan Coastline

Death toll from powerful quake rises to 100, with more than 200 others injured in Pakistan

The quake measuring 7.7Mw struck 66km north-northeast of Awaran, a remote part of the Baluchistan province in southwestern Pakistan.

The quake and its aftershocks destroyed scores of mud houses near the epicenter in sparsely populated Baluchistan region.
