Bali Volcano Threatens to Blow

Up to million people are urged to evacuate Mt Agung precinct on the island of Bali, eastern Indonesia, as the restive volcano threatens to explode imminently.

Authorities raised the warning to the maximum level “four” on Friday night, indicating  a dangerous eruption was imminent within hours.

Up to 2,000 tremors have been shaking the massive volcano since Wednesday, increasing the probability of an explosive eruption.

The volcano last erupted (VEI 5) in 1963-1964, sending about 1.8 cubic meter of volcanic material 10km into the air, and killing at least 1,100 people. Mt Agung [aka, Gunung Agung] is one of Indonesia’s 132 active volcanoes.

Mt Agung threatens to explode

The volcano is ejecting white smoke and ash to a height of more than 3km above the crater, which could affect air travel.

“Volcanic activity remains high and there are indications of magma rising to the surface and causing tremors,” the National Disaster Management Agency has said, warning nearby residents and tourists against entering the exclusion zone.

Mt Agung is one of Indonesia’s 132 active volcanoes. A major eruption in 1963 killed about 1,100 people.

Volcanic ash forces hundreds of flight cancellations over Australia, Indonesia, East Timore, Singapore…

Sangeang Api [“Mountain of Spirits”] began erupting on Friday, after 15 years sending massive plumes of ash into the air, and forcing airport authorities to cancel dozens of lights between Australia and Singapore, East Timore and Bali.

The 20-km high ash cloud is moving in a southeasterly direction, affecting several towns, however there are concerns that the cloud could drift west causing travel chaos in and out of Perth, said the Australian Bureau of Meteorology.

“Depending on wind and other weather conditions, the ash has the potential to affect flights to and from other airports, including Brisbane, during coming days. This is currently being fully assessed,” said a senior official.

Sangeang Api [“Mountain of Spirits”] began erupting on Friday ejecting 20-km high columns of ash into the air and forcing hundreds of flight cancellations.

“The volcano is undergoing a sustained, rather significant eruption at the moment, so for the last 10 hours we’ve been observing large masses of volcanic ash being generated,” the Darwin Volcanic Ash Advisory Center told Reuters.

“Scores of farmers cultivating the land in the island, 7 km from the crater, have been told to leave the area since this morning. And they have been warned not to reenter the island during the eruption period,” Xinhua quoted an Indonesian official as saying.

Sangeang Api, located off the northeast coast of the Indonesian island of Sumbawa, continues to eject huge volumes of volcanic matter into the air.

22 Indonesian Volcanoes Remain on High Alerts

5 Indonesian volcanoes remain on the 2nd highest state of alert, “orange,” 17 others on “yellow”

The alerts follow the latest eruption at Mt Sinabung, which saw the volcano ejecting ash to a height of about 7 km above the summit, forcing the authorities to evacuate about  5,600 people in several villages, according to Indonesia’s Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG).

Indonesian authorities have established a 3-km exclusion zone near the volcano following the Tuesday eruption for the second time in 9 days.

PVMBG had issued a “level three,” or “orange alert,” recommending villagers to stay out of the 3-km danger zone on November 3, 2013, followed by a 7-day state of emergency declared by the local authorities.

The explosive activity follows a series of most recent eruptions exhibited by the 2,460-meter high volcano that began in September 2013, leading to a significant eruption on October 24, which saw the volcano spewing smoke and ash to a height of about 3km above the crater summit, followed by other eruptions, especially the explosive eruption that occurred on Sunday, November 3.

Mt Sinabung is one of 130 or so active volcanoes in the Indonesian archipelago, whose 18,307 islands (922 of the islands are permanently inhabited) straddle the Pacific Ring of Fire (PRF).

PRF, aka the circum-Pacific seismic belt, is home to 452 volcanoes, or more than 75% of the world’s active and dormant volcanoes.

About 90% of the global seismicity and 82% of the largest quakes occur along PRF  [FIRE-EARTH data.]

Mt Sinabung erupted in August 2010 after 410 years of dormancy. The eruption claimed a dozen lives and displaced thousands of others. The eruption which occurred on August 29, 2010 was followed by a more powerful explosion the next day, and much stronger blast on September 7, 2010.

Sinabung spewed ash to a height of about 2km in its second eruption in two days on August 30, 2010.

The PVMBG categorizes Sinabung as a type A volcano, or those that have erupted since 1600. Type B volcanoes have not erupted since 1600 but show signs of activity, and type C are those that have not erupted in recorded history.

The Krakatoa eruption affected the climate driving the weather patterns wild for the next 5 years. Average global temperatures fell by about 1.2 °C in the following years, returning to normal only in 1888.

The eruption ejected about 21 cubic kilometers of volcanic matter and destroyed two-thirds of the Krakatoa island. The explosion also spawned giant tsunamis killing an estimated 40,000 people.

Based on their models, our colleagues at EDRO forecast that the collapse of Singapore may occur as a result of volcanic activity on the island of Sumatra. However, they have not disclosed any further detail.

Indonesia Volcano Alerts

PVMBG has placed five volcanoes on the second highest level of activity “Level III, Orange Alert,” and 17 others on  third highest alert level “Level II, Yellow Alert.” Following table shows the alert level designations, as of November 16, 2013.

Mount Sinabung in North Sumatra erupts explosively

North Sumatra’s Sinabung volcano erupted explosively early Sunday, ejecting a column of smoke and ash up to 7,000 meters above the summit on November 3, according to Indonesia’s Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG).

Authorities have established a 3-km exclusion zone and are evacuating 4 villages, according to local reports.

The explosive activity follows a series of most recent eruptions exhibited by the 2,460-meter high volcano that began in September, 2013, leading to a significant eruption on October 24, which saw the volcano spewing smoke and ash to a height of about 3km above the crater summit.

Mount Rokatenda Erupts, Kills 6 People

Restive Mount Rokatenda on Palue, Indonesia, finally erupts

Mount Rokatenda, located on the small island of Palue about 2,000km east of Jakarta, erupted spewing ash and rocks more than 2,000 meter into the air.

Hot ash and lava from the eruption fell on a nearby beach, killing at least 6 people including 2 children, officials said.

Rokatenda has been restive since last October, forcing the evacuation of hundreds of villagers.

The eruption started at 04:27 on Saturday (20:27 UTC Friday) and lasted for about 4 hours, according to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency.

Mount Rokatenda is one of about 130 active volcanoes in Indonesia, an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands. Much of the country sits along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an area crisscrossed by numerous fault lines and prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity.

Mount Merapi’s 2010 eruption in central Java left up to 400 people dead and more than 250,000 others displaced.

Indonesia’s Soputan Volcano Erupts

Mount Soputan, one of Sulawesi island’s most active volcanoes, erupted again on Sunday

North Sulawesi’s Soputan volcano erupted on Sunday at about 6:00 am local time, ejecting a column of volcanic gases about 6km into the air.

However, no evacuation order was issued as the volcano did not pose an immediate danger, officials said.

“They nearest residents live some eight kilometers from the mountain and so evacuation is not yet necessary [since the current evacuation zone was set at a 6km radius around the volcano, a forested area that is uninhabited,]” spokesman of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said.

“Last night, at around 11 pm, the mountain entered its eruption phase,” he said.

Mt Soputan is located about 2,160 km (1,340 miles) northeast of Indonesian capital Jakarta. The volcano  had previously erupted in 2008.

Indonesia, which sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, is home to 150 listed volcanoes, some 109 to 130 of which are regarded as active, according to various sources.

The small Soputan stratovolcano, seen here from the west, was constructed on the southern rim of the Quaternary Tondano caldera in northern Sulawesi Island. The youthful, largely unvegetated Soputan volcano is one of Sulawesi’s most active volcanoes. During historical time the locus of eruptions has included both the summit crater and Aeseput, a prominent NE flank vent that formed in 1906 and was the source of intermittent major lava flows until 1924. Pacific Ring of Fire

The Pacific Ring of Fire is an area of frequent siesmic activity and volcanic eruptions caused by plate tectonic movements. Encircling the basin of the Pacific Ocean, which contains oceanic trenches, volcanic arcs, and volcanic belts, the 40,000 km Ring of Fire is home to 452 volcanoes. About ninety percent of the world’s earthquakes including 80% of the world’s major earthquakes occur along the Pacific Ring of Fire.


Volcanic arcs and oceanic trenches partly encircling the Pacific Basin form the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a zone of frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The trenches are shown in blue-green. The volcanic island arcs, although not labeled, are parallel to, and always landward of, the trenches. Mt Merapi Erupts Again, 70,000 Evacuated

Java’s Mount Merapi volcano erupted again forcing up to 70,000 to evacuate

Merapi’s latest eruption on Monday, the third in a week, ejecting  a dense plume of ash cloud up into the air to a height of about 1.5 km, local volcanologists reported.

Two other volcanoes, Mount Anak Krakatau (Sunda strait) and Mount Sinabung (North Sumatra), are also showing signs of increased activity, they said.

Sinabung Erupts Again – Strongest Explosion to Date

The Sumatran volcano ejected black tephra 5km into the air on Tuesday — its most powerful eruption since reawakening.

The force of explosion was reportedly felt 8km away. The authorities have relocated more than 30,000 people living on the volcano’s slopes.

“There was a huge, thunderous sound. It sounded like hundreds of bombs going off at one,” an eyewitness said. “Then everything starting shaking. I’ve never experienced anything like it.”

Ash from the latest Sinabung eruption reached villages 15 miles (25 kilometers) away from the volcano’s summit, a report said.

According to Indonesia’s head volcanologist, Surono, Today’s eruption was more powerful than the first yesterday.

“Earlier today was another eruption at 6.30 a.m., sending out smoke as high as two km, more or less.” He said.

“I saw some hot pieces of volcanic rock come out and burn trees in the area,” A Reuters photographer said

“People have been evacuated from areas within a six km (four-mile) radius of the volcano,” vulcanologist Surono said. “Beyond six km it is safe, but there has still been a lot of panic among people here who don’t understand that.”

He said it was impossible to know when the eruptions would stop, but it was unlikely volcanic dust would drift to neighboring countries.

“Here, [the volcanic dash]  is three millimeters (1/8 of an inch) thick on the leaves of plants,” he said, adding that he did not believe the neighboring countries would be affected as a result of this eruptive episode.

Our colleagues at EDRO believe that the collapse of Singapore may occur as a result of volcanic activity on the island of Sumatra. However, they have not disclosed any further detail.

Lava spewing ‘like a ball of fire’

Indonesian officials have issued a red alert after Mount Sinabung on the island of Sumatra began spewing lava early Sunday morning.

The volcano had been spewing smoke and ash to a height of about 1.5km a.s.l. throughout Saturday, local reports said, quoting  eye witnesses who saw lava spewing out of the volcano from 7 km away.

The authorities have evacuated up to 15,000 residents living near the volcano.

Mount Sinabung is one of Indonesia’s 130  active volcanoes, and had last erupted about 400 years ago.

The head of Indonesia’s vulcanology center was quoted by Reuters as saying:

“This is the first time since 1600 that Sinabung erupted [although there are no activities recorded] and we have little knowledge in terms on its eruptive patterns and general forms.”

The volcano is located about 260km east of the epicenter of the 9.1 – 9.3Mw earthquake which struck off the coast of Sumatra on December 26, 2004, triggering the deadly Boxing Day Tsunami.
