Bloodbath in Iraq Continues Unabated

More than 1,000  people were killed in Iraq in January 2014

On average, 35 people have been killed in Iraq each day, so far this year.

According to the United Nation’s Assistance (!) Mission in Iraq (UNAMI), a total of733 people were killed nationwide in terrorist and violent acts during the month of January. The UNAMI death figure includes 618 civilians and 115 members of the security forces.  Additionally, 1,229 others were wounded.

According to Iraq Body Count, the number of civilians killed in the January bloodbath were 1,076.

Some 8,868 Iraqis, including 7,818 civilians and civilian police personnel, were killed in 2013, according to UNAMI.

Iraq Body Count puts the number of civilians killed in violent acts at 9,475 for 2013.

November another Month of Bloody Massacres in Iraq

On average 30 – 40 people killed in Iraq each day in November

At least 1,121 people were killed in bloody violence across Iraq in November, according to the Interior Ministry.

The Iraqi ministry of health, however, put the number of people massacred last month at 948, including 852 civilians, 53 policemen and 43 military personnel.

At least 1,349 others were wounded in the deadly attacks which included mass murder by car bombs, IEDs, AEDs, mortar and gunfire, as well as executions by hanging, slitting throats, beheading and sniper fire.

More than 8,200 have been massacred and about 18,000 others wounded in Iraq so far this year, making 2013 the bloodiest year since 2008. 

2013 Casualty Stats for Acts of terrorism and Violence in Iraq released by UNAMI

• In November, according to UNAMI, 565 civilians (including 120 civilian police) were killed and 1,186 persons (including 239 civilian police) were wounded. Additionally, 94 members of the Iraqi Security Forces were killed and 187 were wounded.  [See above for Nov. stats provided by other sources.]

• In October 2013, at least 1,095 people were killed and more than 1,900 others wounded.
  • October death toll for Iraq was 979, exactly the same as September toll (!), according to UNAMI.
• In September 2013, at least 1,220 civilians were killed and about 2,000 others wounded
  • Baghdad, 1 October 2013 – According to casualty figures released today by UNAMI, a total of 979 Iraqis were killed and another 2,133 wounded in acts of terrorism and violence in September.

• In August 2013, a minimum of 716 civilians were killed (including 106 civilian police) a further 1,936 wounded (including 195 civilian police).
• In July 2013, at least 928 were killed (including 204 civilian police) a further 2,109 were wounded (including 338 civilian police).
• In June 2013, a minimum of 685 civilians were killed and 1,610 others wounded.
• In May 2013, at least 963 civilians were killed and 2,191 others wounded.

An entire generation of Syrian children are becoming casualties of the Saudi-supported terrorist war in the country, with the UN refugee agency calling the situation as “a shameful milestone of conflict.”

More than half of the 2.2 million Syrian refugees are children, young people aged 17 or under, as the country faces losing an entire generation, warns UNHCR.

Some 75 per cent of the refugee children are under the age of 12.

“Too many have been wounded physically, psychologically or both. Some children have been drawn into the war—their innocence ruthlessly exploited,”  said UNHCR in a report.

Many of those not at school go out to work for long hours and for low pay from as young as seven years old.

As many as 300,000 living in Lebanon and Jordan could be without formal education by the end of 2013, said UNHCR.

Thousands of children in Jordan and Lebanon are living without one or both of their parents, or with no adult caregivers at all.

Philippine Mega Disaster:  Death toll rises to 5,632 with 1,759 others missing and  26,136 injured

Death toll from Super Typhoon HAIYAN climbed to 5,632, after 34 bodies were recovered in central Tacloban city since Thursday, said the Philippine National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

The number of people missing also rose to 1,759, with 26,136 others reported injured due to HAIYAN [ locally known as YOLANDA.] Read more…

Another day of massacre in Iraq leaves at least 55 dead

At least 55 people were killed  on Friday as sectarian violence continues to spiral in Iraq.

Most of the victims were targeted individuals who had been snatched  from their homes in Baghdad and neighboring towns, and executed,  authorities said.

Police discovered 18 corpses early morning, including four policemen, an army major and two tribal chiefs, dumped in farmland near the town of Tarmiyah, north of Baghdad.

More than 8,000 people have been killed in Iraq, so far this year.

Mozambique airliner carrying 34 people vanishes

A passenger plane carrying 34 people vanished from radar screens over northeast Namibia en route from Mozambique to Angola on Friday, said the Mozambique Airlines .

The Embraer 190 with 28 passengers and six crews failed to arrive at the Angolan capital Luanda, authorities said.

Police helicopter crashes into Glasgow “pub”

At least three people were killed and dozens of other injured after a police helicopter crashed into a busy pub in Glasgow, Scotland.

Scottish authorities have declared a major incident after a police helicopter with a crew of three came down on the roof of a public house with an estimated 120 people inside.

55 found HIV positive in tests for blood donation in Japan

Some 55 of the 782 cases of new HIV infections confirmed across Japan between January and September 2013 were detected in tests for blood donors, according Japan’s health ministry.

Among every 100,000 blood donors, 1.4 people tested positive for HIV this year, the ministry’s data show. The rate is 1.8 times the nationwide ratio for HIV carriers detected last year.

Earlier this month, blood donated from an HIV-infected man was given to 2 people, one of whom became infected, said NHK.

The health authorities have not revealed the criteria for the test. It’s unclear what percentage of the donors are tested for HIV, given the latest infections.

Deep Freeze Ends Growing Season in Nevada Counties

The growing season has ended for White Pine, Southern Lander and Southern Eureka counties, said NWS.

Temperatures dipped into the 20s across the majority of Southern Lander/Eureka and White Pine counties on Friday, killing most tender vegetation in these areas.

Light freezes have also occurred in other forecast zones including Northern Lander, Northern Eureka, Southeastern Elko and northern Nye counties. Growing season in isolated areas in these counties may have also ended.

Dozens drown as Nigeria boat sinks

At least 48 people drowned and more that 100 others are reported missing after a boat sank on the River Niger in central Nigeria late Friday, according to local reports.

The boat may have been overloaded, carrying more that two and a half times the number of passengers allowed, reports said.

Dozens Still missing after refugee boat sinks

“More than 30 people were still missing two days after a boat carrying asylum seekers to Australia sank off the Indonesian coast, killing 22 people including seven children,” Indonesian security officials said.

Dozens killed in Mumbai building collapse

Death toll reached 60 on Sunday in the collapsed apartment building in India’s financial capital of Mumbai, officials said. Some 33 others were rescued from the building’s wreckage.

The five-story building, which collapsed on Friday, was the third deadly cave-in of a Mumbai structure in six months, said a report.

“In April, at least 72 people died when an illegally constructed building fell. Two months later, a three-story structure collapsed, killing at least 10 people, including five children.”

Giant Hornets Kill Dozens in China

Attacks by swarms of giant hornets in Shaanxi province, central China, has left at least 28 people dead and up to a thousand others injured, many of them seriously, according to reports.

Terrorized victims have described being chased by large swarms of hornets for hundreds of yards and stung as many as 200 times over several minutes.

The insects have a highly toxic sting that can lead to anaphylactic shock and kidney failure, according to experts.

It’s believed that the swarms are populated mainly by the Asian giant hornet or Vespa mandarinia, which grows up to 50mm (2 ins.) long with a 6mm sting.

Experts have previously suggested that warmer temperatures in the region may be responsible for hornets breeding more successfully.

German Town Evacuated after Gas Explosion

The entire town of Hartenhausen (population: ~ 3,000) near Ludwigshafen  in central Germany was evacuated on Saturday after a major gas explosion injured 16 firefighters and shattered windows. The blast was so powerful it could be heard up to 30 kilometers away, AP reported.

50 Nigerian students killed in armed attack

At least 50 Nigerian students have been killed in an armed attack, AP reported. The attack occurred at an agricultural college in northeast Nigeria’s Yobe State.  Gunmen broke into the college dorm at night and shot students as they slept. The authorities have blamed the Boko Haram [“Western education is forbidden”] group.

Bomb blasts kill 39 in Peshawar, NW Pakistan

Two bomb explosions in the northwestern Pakistan city of Peshawar killed 36 people and wounded more than 100 on Sunday, authorities said.

The victims included 12 members of a family who were shopping at the blast sites, according to local officials.
The powerful blasts destroyed about 20 buildings and many vehicles in nearby streets.

The Peshawar twin blasts were the third major terrorist in the city over the past 8 days. A twin suicide bomb attack on a Christian church on September 22 killed more than more than 80 people. On Friday September 27, a bomb planted on a bus carrying local government employees exploded killing at least 19 people.

Iraq Violence: Death Toll for September Reaches 1,079

At least 30 more people were killed in Iraq Saturday and Sunday, as of posting, in the cities of Arbil, Baghdad, Baiji, Basra, Falluja Mosul, Mussayab, Muqdadiya and Tikrit by bombs, AEDs, IEDs and gunfire, raising the death toll for September to 1,079 so far.

Death toll for 2013 has exceeded 6,000 and is expected to climb higher.

Death Toll from Mexico Storms Climbs to 110

Mexico death toll from storms MANUEL and INGRID rises to 110, with 68 others still missing

Deadly storms MANUEL and INGRID have claimed at least 110 lives and left 68 others missing, presumed dead, after a mudslide buried the village of La Pintada in western Guerrero state.

Historic Rainfall

“We are confronting rainfall that has practically been the most extensive in the history of the entire national territory,” said President Nieto.

The death toll climbed after searchers recovered the bodies of five police officers who were killed when their Black Hawk helicopter crashed into a hillside near La Pintada on Thursday.

The storms have destroyed or damaged private property and public infrastructure in all but 2 of Mexico’s 31 states and affected a total of 1.2 million people, reports said.

About 40,000 tourists had to be evacuated, including 25,00 who were airlifted, out of Acapulco after severe flooding destroyed road and bridges cutting off the popular beach resort.

The full extent of disaster is still unknown because many rural communities remain cut off, officials said.

Other Global Disasters/ Significant Events

Residents in sections of Rio Arriba County, New Mexico, have been  told to evacuate due to flooding, Sunday night.

An evacuation order has been issued for residents along Highway 68 in Alcalde and Velarde, said a report.

Governor Martinez signed an executive order earlier this month declaring a statewide emergency due to flooding caused by extreme rain events.

Typhoon USAGI Disaster Update No. 2

Typhoon USAGI has killed at least 25 after making landfall in Guangdong Province late Sunday.

The powerful typhoon has affected about 5.48 million people, leaving 310,000 residents displaced.

USAGI has destroyed 8,490 homes and ruined 50,800 hectares of cropland.

The losses and damage from USAGI is estimated at about  CNY7.1billion (US$1.16 billion) in Guangdong province, said a report.

Iraq Violence

At least 39 people were killed on Sunday raising the death toll from Iraqi violence to 865 so far this month.

The killings occurred in Baghdad (29 people killed by gunfire, IEDs, suicide bomber), Mosul (9 killed by gunfire, IEDs ) and Abu Saida (1 person killed by gunfire), said Iraq Body Count.

As of September 22, at least 5,110 people have been killed and more than 12,000 other wounded in Iraq since the beginning of 2013, according to UNAMI figures.
