Two days of extreme rain have caused severe flooding in parts of northern and central Italy devastating Tuscany, Umbria and Lazio regions.

  • Hundreds of people have been forced to flee their homes amid major flooding.
  • About 80 percent of  Venice has been submerged under several feet of floodwater.
  • Tuscan president has asked the army for help after several rivers burst their banks in the region.
  • At least four people have reportedly died in the flooding.

Remnants of deadly pre-Halloween storm system that killed at least 22 people in New England causes severe flash flooding in northern Italy, leaving more than a dozen people dead or missing; more flooding is expected.

  • Genoa. Italy. At least a dozen people were killed or reported as missing when the Italian port city of Genoa was hit by flash floods following torrential rainfall caused by the remnants of pre-Halloween nor’easter that killed more than 22 people across New England and knocked out power to 4 million homes and businesses on October 29-30.
    • The system brought in heavy rains to much of northern Italy, flooding several areas including Venice.
    • Last week storms buffeted portions of Italy’s NW coastal regions of Liguria and Tuscany, causing severe flash floods and mudslides, destroying at least two of the five Cinque Terre villages, leaving more than a dozen people  dead or missing and prompting the authorities to declare a state of emergency.
  • Oman. Death toll from a tropical storm that swept across Oman has climbed to at least 16, reports said.
  • Somerset, England. A pile-up involving about 30 vehicles on England’s M5 highway has left about a dozen people dead and up to 40 others injured, some critically.
    • “It looked like two lorries had jack-knifed at the front. In all, there must have been eight or nine lorries and 15 cars behind them. There was smoke and flames everywhere.” Said an eyewitness.
    • Surface flooding and fog contributed to the deadly pile-up, reports said.

Storms buffeted portions of Italy’s NW coastal regions of Liguria and Tuscany Tuesday, causing severe flash floods and mudslides, destroying at least two of the five Cinque Terre villages and leaving more than a dozen people  dead or missing.

  • Liguria [and Tuscany,] Italy. Flash flooding and mudslides in the fishing villages of Cinque Terre, located in the mountainous portion of Italian Riviera, has obliterated two of the five communities.
    • The two villages of Vernazza and Monterosso have all but been wiped out by torrents of mud and water poured down from the hills behind them.
    • “Monterosso no longer exists,” Angelo Betta the village mayor told reporters, describing the event as an “unimaginable disaster.”

    • Cinque Terre [“The Five Lands”] is composed of five villages: Corniglia, Manarola, Monterosso al Mare,  Riomaggiore and Vernazza.
    • The villages and surrounding area are listed as a a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
    • The villages were cut off after flooding and mudslides destroyed the region’s  roads and bridges.
    • Hundreds of thousands of international tourists flock to the villages each year.

Other Global Disasters

  • Yogyakarta, Indonesia. A year after Mt. Merapi erupted, killing at least 300 people and destroying thousands of homes,   many thousands of people remain homeless, a report said.
    • “Tens of thousands of people were made homeless by the lahar and the imposition of a 20-kilometer exclusion radius around the volcano’s crater. A year later, many are still living in temporary shelters, despite government pledges to build them new homes in safer areas.”
    • “The eruptions last year displaced around 100 million cubic meters of volcanic ash around the mountain,” said the head of the Volcano Investigation and Technology Development Institution (BPPTK).
