January Third Warmest Recorded Globally

Arctic Sea Ice Extent. January sea ice extent was 8.6 percent below the 1981-2010 – the smallest January sea ice extent since satellite records began in 1979.

Antarctic Sea Ice Extent. January sea ice extent was 22.8 percent below the 1981-2010 – the smallest January sea ice extent on record.

Global Temperatures

The globally averaged temperature over land and ocean surfaces for January 2017 was 0.88°C (1.58°F) above the 20th century average of 12.0°C (53.6°F). This was the third highest January temperature in the 1880–2017 record, behind 2016 (highest) and 2007 (second highest).

Global land surface temperature was also third highest for the month of January at 1.54°C (2.77°F) above the 20th century average of 2.8°C (37.0°F).

For the oceans, the globally-averaged temperature departure of +0.65°C (+1.17°F) from the 20th century average was the second highest on record for January, behind 2016.

Global Land Surface Third Warmest June on Record

Earth’s land surface was 1.05°C above 20th century average

The global land surface temperature rose 1.05°C (1.89°F) above the 20th century average of 13.3°C (55.9°F), marking the third warmest June on record, according to NOAA.

  • The June global sea surface temperature was 0.48°C  above the 20th century average of 16.4°C, the 10th warmest June in the 134-year period of record.
  • June’s combined average temperature for land and ocean surfaces for 2013 tied with 2006 as the fifth highest on record, at 0.64°C above the 20th century average of 15.5°C.
  • The combined global land and ocean average surface temperature for the January–June period (year-to-date) was 0.59°C above the 20th century average of 13.5°C, tying with 2003 as the seventh warmest similar period on record.
  • The United States experienced its 15th-warmest June on record.
  • Monthly average records for June were broken over much of N Canada, far NW Russia, the Philippines, S Japan, portion of SW China and part of Africa.

Image of the Day: Heat Wave in Northern Europe

On the calendar, Scandinavian summer starts on June 21 in 2008, but summer temperatures had already settled over much of northern Europe by early June. This image shows land surface temperatures—how hot the ground is to the touch, a measure that is different than the air temperatures reported in the news—as observed by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite between June 2 and June 8, 2008.

The image compares the average temperature between June 2 and June 8, 2008, to average temperatures recorded during the same period in June 2000 through 2007. Areas that were warmer than average are red, while cooler than average conditions are represented in blue.The heat that dominated the weather in northern Europe in early June is evident in the dark red that covers Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and parts of Germany and Poland. Southern Europe experienced cooler than average temperatures during the period.

The intense heat and dry weather led to dangerous fire conditions in Scandinavia. Both Norway and Sweden were plagued with several forest fires in early June. A fire that burned for several days in southern Norway was the largest in the country’s history, causing an estimated ten million dollars worth of damage, reported The Norway Post on June 17, 2008.
