N. Calif. Fire Doubles in Size, Threatens 6,300 Structures, Forces Mass Evacuations

Massive blaze destroys dozens of homes, threatens 6,301 buildings, forces tens of thousands of evacuations in northern Calif.

The 54,000-acre Rocky Fire wildfire, burning north of San Francisco, exploded to twice its size in less than 24 hours, destroying dozens of homes, threatening more than 6,300 structures, and forcing tens of thousands of residents to flee their homes.

The 220-square-kilometer blaze is burning in Lake, Yolo and  Colusa counties  and was  less than 5 percent contained, as of posting. [Last Updated by CalFire on August 2, 2015 at 8:00pm PDT]

Tens of thousands of people are currently under mandatory evacuation orders.

The fire is burning near Morgan Valley Road and Rocky Creek Road, east of Lower Lake, across the three counties of Lake, Yolo and Colusa.

Evacuations: NEW – A Mandatory Evacuation order has been implemented for all residents on Ogulin Canyon Road. Law enforcement is currently in the area and informing residents of the mandatory evacuation. All of Ogulin Canyon road will be closed to traffic. A Mandatory Evacuation order is in effect for all of Spring Valley. Law enforcement is currently advising Spring Valley residents of the mandatory evacuation. The Highway 20 corridor will be closed from New Long Valley Road to Highway 53. Road Closures: Highway 20 is closed from Highway 16 to Highway 53 for all through traffic in both directions due to increased fire activity. Conditions: The fire activity has grown dramatically and firefighters are aggressively working to stop the progression. The terrain is steep and rugged with limited access, fuels are at critical levels and there is little to no fire history in the area. In total, all evacuations impact over 12,190 citizens living in over 5,201 residences. Damage assessment teams have begun initial assessments based on access through fire affected areas. Resources continue to respond from around the state.

California Burning: Massive Wildfires Threaten Thousands of Structures

27,000-acre blaze destroys dozens of buildings, threatens 5,165 structures, forces mass evacuation

The so-called Rocky Fire wildfire burning north of San Francisco has exploded in size to more than 109 square kilometers, destroying 24 residences and 26 outbuildings, damaging 3 others and threatening 6,156  additional structures, according to Cal Fire.

Up to 15,000 people are under mandatory evacuation orders or evacuation advisories.

There are at least 14 major fire currently burning tens of thousands of acres across the drought-plagued Golden State.

Additionally, hundreds of smaller fires,  sparked by thousands of lightning strikes, are scorching the bone-dry landscape, said Cal Fire.

Extreme Rain Event and Historic Flooding  Submerge City in Florida Panhandle

 A slow-moving storm system, responsible for dozens of deaths and more than 100 tornadoes in Central, South and Eastern U.S., dumped 21.4 inches of rain in a 23-hour period on Pensacola, Fla., killing at least one person, washing away bridges and destroying many miles of highways and roads across the region.

A second, unconfirmed fatality was also reported as a result of flooding.

Multiple  incidents of  major flooding were reported in Alabama, North Carolina and other parts of Florida.

The system had also dumped about 21 inches of rain on Gulf Shores, Alabama, by early Wednesday.

Up to 3,000 lightning strikes per hour were recorded in central Florida.  Lightning was also blamed for multiple bushfires in Volusia County on Tuesday.

Mega storm hits Sydney with lightning , thunder and heavy rain

Severe thunderstorm and torrential rains swept through Sydney and much of New South Wales in Australia on Wednesday, wreaking havoc across a vast region.

Massive clouds rolled over Sydney harbor spawning a ferocious electrical storm described by some residents as an “Apocalyptic Storm.”

More storms are expected to hit New South Wales (NSW) over the next few days, forecasters said.

Wildfire Risk Increasing in Western United States

Lightning caused by storms could ignite new wildfires in the West and Pacific Northwest, NWS reported.

“A strong weather system will move through the Pacific Northwest and across the northern Rockies over the course of the week. Dry, gusty winds are already contributing to increased fire danger in this region, but conditions will worsen on Wednesday as the weather system brings a chance of ‘dry’ thunderstorms. The lightning from these storms could ignite new wildfires that could spread rapidly.”

Guatemala’s Fuego volcano eruption forces tens of thousands of people to evacuate

Fuego’s powerful explosions ejected smoke and ash about 4km into the air, spewing two lava stream down the volcano flanks, accompanied by thousands of tons of volcanic ash and tephra.

About 35,000 people from two dozen villages nearest to the volcano have been evacuated, awaiting evacuation, or are on notice to abandon their homes depending on the wind direction, authorities said.

• The 3,763 m volcano, dubbed the ‘Volcano of Fire,’  sits about 10km SW of the colonial city of Antigua (Pop: ~ 50,000) , Guatemala’s former capital, and is one of Central America’s most active volcanoes.

Nicaragua: 3,000 people are being evacuated as San Cristóbal volcano explodes

San Cristobal, Nicaragua’s highest volcano, exploded at least 3 times, expelling volcanic gases, ash and tephra about 1,500 meters into the air and forcing evacuations of thousands of people in the rural northwestern department of Chinandega.

• Authorities say up to 20,000 people may have to be evacuated.
• The 1,745-m volcano sits 140km northwest of the capital, Managua.
• The explosions may have been primed by the Magnitude 7.6 earthquake which struck Costa Rica on September 5, 2012.

United States.  Red Flag Warnings/Extreme Fire Danger. Critical Fire Weather Conditions are expected across parts of the Great Basin, Northern Rockies and Great Plains on Sunday, NWS said. Red Flag Warnings are in effect for parts of at least 12 states.

• “Thunderstorms with little or no rain coupled with abundant lightning will offer a threat for critical fire weather conditions across portions of the northern Rockies on Sunday. Meanwhile, strong winds and low relative humidity will also create locally dangerous fire weather conditions across the northern and central Great Basin as well as the northern and central Great Plains.” NWS forecasters said.

Storms and floods Cause Chaos in the UK‎

Fierce storms, lightning, ‘giant’ hail stones, torrential rains, and flash floods in parts of the UK  prompt evacuations and power cuts

Flash floods have inundated thousands of homes and businesses and forced evacuations in Northern England, the Midlands, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Lightning storms have cut power to tens of thousands of people in the North East, derailed a train and closed the railway between Scotland and England.

Torrential downpours and flash floods have caused major travel disruption across a wide region.

“There was also widespread disruption on rail services and roads, with many routes under several inches of water. A number were closed,” said a report.

“Flooding and landslips are causing heavy delays on routes between Northern England and Scotland, with very limited travel options,” the railway operators reported.

Since the begging of June, heavy rain and flash floods have brought havoc to communities in west Wales, and across northern England flooding thousands of homes and businesses.

Extreme rain events have dumped more than a month’s rain in less than 24 hours in some places.

There are also reports of damage from squalls and tornadoes in the region.

Record Number of Lightning Strikes

More than 110,000 lightning bolts struck the UK, with more than 200 strikes recorded every minute during peak activity, the UK Met Office reported.

“Experts said this was 40 times higher than an average lightning storm and was the equivalent of four months’ worth of strikes in one day,” said a report.

• The record-setting heat wave continues to expand. “Excessive Heat Warnings and Heat Advisories will be in effect throughout the Plains, the Midwest, the Southeast and the Mid-Atlantic. Critical fire weather conditions will continue for the central Great Basin and the Plains with several large wildfires burning in Colorado, Utah, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming and New Mexico,” NWS reported.

• Record high temperatures are expected to continue, while excessive heat also continues to worsen the air quality in various areas. “One of the worst areas is the lower end of Lake Michigan from the Wisconsin-Illinois state line to Montague, Mich,” NWS said.

• “Excessive Heat Warnings cover the eastern half of Kansas, the western fourth of Missouri and parts of southwest Missouri, southern Illinois, southwest Indiana and western Kentucky. Heat Advisories cover parts of 16 states, including:  Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Washington, D.C. An Excessive Heat Watch is in effect today for most of the Atlantic Coast,” NWS reported.

U.S. Wildfires

• Waldo Canyon Fire in Pike and San Isabel National Forests, El Paso County, CO. State of Disaster has been declared by the President. Size revised down to 17,073 acres; the deadly fire has caused at least two fatalities, destroyed at least 346 homes and damaged two dozens more. The blaze is reportedly 25% contained.

• Pine Ridge Fire. The town of De Beque remains under evacuation as the explosive blaze grows to 12,047 acres with an estimated 10% contained. Lightning ignited the blaze on Wednesday June 27th, 2012. Fire conditions are said to be extreme with high temperatures, high winds, low humidities, and extremely dry fuels.

• Wyoming.  Arapaho Fire in Medicine Bow National Forest & Thunder Basin National grassland is one of three fires believed to have been ignited by lightning in the Laramie Peak area.
  • “Due to the fast-moving nature of this fire, evacuations were initiated in the Cottonwood Park, Friend Park, North Laramie Trailhead and Harris Park areas. At this time it is unknown if structures were burned. Residents in and south of Esterbrook were notified of possible evacuations, but have not been evacuated at this time,” USFS reported.
  • The 2-day old blaze has consumed an estimated 5,000 acres and is said to have extreme growth potential, with plume dominated behavior, rapid rate of spread (1 – 1.5 miles/hour), and long range spotting.

• Utah.Clay Springs Fire, Fishlake National Forest, Clay Springs, East of Oak City, Utah.
  • A super explosive blaze has consumed 68,309 acres in two days.
  • Fire Behavior: Today the fire made extreme runs with spotting to 1/2 a mile and growing from 50000 acres to 68000 acres, with potential for similar rates of spread tonight. … running crown fire and intense ground fire with nearly complete combustion occurring in all fuel types. Extreme resistance to control and high probability of ignition …
  • Significant Events: Fire spread down Wide Canyon to the east as well as running down the back of Canyon Mountains towards I-15 and the towns of Scipio and Mills.
  • Current Weather:  SW winds of 17-25 mph; 98 degrees heat; 11% humidity.

• Utah.  Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon has declared a state of emergency due to the Rose Crest Fire in Herriman. The blaze has destroyed or damaged 5 houses and forced mandatory evacuation of some 948 houses in an area, a report said.
  • The fire started mid afternoon when “a car with a hot exhaust parked on top of some dry weeds” and and set them on fire. The temperature in Herriman was 92 degrees and the relative humidity just 11 percent when the blaze ignited.

State of Emergency Declared in 29 North Carolina Counties

N.C. Gov. declares a state of emergency in 29 counties due to drought conditions, wildfires

Several major fires are raging in Pender, Dare, Brunswick, New Hanover, Columbus, Onslow and Bladen counties.

The fires, covering about 80,000 acres, were started by lightning and have been burning for more than a week.

State of Emergency Declaration

Gov. Beverly Perdue signed the declaration “due to the extreme fire hazard created by dry conditions and the current wildfires/forest fires in several of these counties.”

Perdue said in a statement:

“I want to assure residents of North Carolina that the state Division of Forest Resources and its partnering agencies are working hard to contain the fires in Eastern North Carolina. They will continue to focus on the top priorities of protecting lives and property nearest the fires.”

Details of property damage and evacuation orders were not known as of posting. However, many communities across the region have been alerted for possible evacuation.

Up to 15 counties are currently under an air quality alert due to particulate matter (PM-2.5) traveling in the wind.

Code Purple Alert

The N.C. Department of Environmental and Natural Resources has issued a Code Purple alert (“very unhealthy”)  for coastal communities due to the smoke from the blazes this weekend.

“Some of the highest particle pollution levels that [the state Division of Air Quality] has ever measured were in smoke plumes from wildfires … Fine particles can penetrate deeply into the lungs and be absorbed into the bloodstream, causing or aggravating heart and lung diseases.” The agency said in a statement.

NOTE: EPA seems to have two Code Purple Alerts!!

The First Code Purple refers to “very unhealthy” air quality, or AQI of 201 to 300.

The Second Code Purple seems to refer to “hazardous” air quality, or AQI of 301 to 500.
