Strong Earthquake Strikes Southern Peru

Posted by feww on May 6, 2010

Magnitude 6.8 Earthquake Strikes Southern Peru Region

Strong earthquake measuring 6.8Mw struck southern Peru about 25km west of the town of Tacna, Peru.

The earthquake’s epicenter was located near 70.68°W 18.13°S, and at a depth of about 10 to 36km. The shock occurred on Thursday, May 6, 2010 at 2:42:48 UTC.

In March, Fire-Earth’s EarthModel simulations indicated strong probability of large earthquake occurring in Peru. The forecast is valid throughout 2010 and 2011.

As of posting, Chile’s state national emergency office had not received  any report of damage or injuries in Chilean territory, and there was no tsunami alert.

Fire-Earth Moderators believes there may have been some casualties in Peru judging by the magnitude of the quake and vulnerability of buildings in rural areas of Peru.
