M6.2 Quake Strikes S of Mataram, Indonesia
Centered at 11.466°S, 116.234°E the event occurred at a depth of 29.9 km (18.6 mi), reported USGS/EHP.
The event occurred directly south of Segara Anak, a crater lake contained within Mt Rinjani, located on the Lombok Island. Segara Anak is the remnant of Mount Samalas, a 4,200-meter volcano that exploded in 1257 AD, shooting about 350 cubic kilometers of ejecta into the atmosphere [that’s about twice the amount of ejecta from Mt. Tambora explosion in 1815 .] The explosion, believed to be a VEI-7, was one of the largest eruptions over the last seven or so thousand years, and was possibly responsible for triggering the Little Ice Age, according to a study.
