Mexico Declares State of Disaster, 3 Days of Mourning as EQ Toll Rises

M7.1 Earthquake Leaves Hundreds Dead across Five Mexican States

Mexico has declared a state of disaster, and three days of mourning, as the earthquake death toll continues to rise.

A 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck near Atencingo in Puebla state, about 120km SSE of Mexico City on September 19, at 18:14 (UTC).

The earthquake destroyed scores of buildings and damaged thousands more across a wide area, inducing about 2,300 schools alone, according to reports.

The official  death toll now stands at 230 across five states, with at least 100 fatalities in the capital, but it’s expected to rise, as search for survivors continues.

Up to several thousand people may have been injured, but the exact number is  currently unknown.

Strong Earthquake Strikes SSE of Mexico City

M7.1 Earthquake Strikes 5km ENE of Raboso, Mexico –USGS

  • The quake violently shook high-rise buildings in the Mexico City megalopolis, sending tens of thousands of scared residents fleeing into the streets.
  • Unknown no. of buildings have collapsed; major structural damage reported in parts of the capital.
  • Large plumes of dusts were seen rising at various location throughout the city.
  • A powerful 8.1 magnitude earthquake struck Middle America Trench off the Mexican coast – centered about 600km SE of today’s event – on September 8, triggering a tsunami, killing about 100 people and causing major damage to the region.
  • Today’s event occurred on the anniversary of the 1985 Mexico City deadly earthquake that struck in the early morning of 19 September at 07:17:50 (CST), killing 5,000 – 45,000 people, injuring 30,000 others and causing  major damage to the Greater Mexico City. The event was centered at 18.35N, 102.39W, and was followed by two significant aftershocks.
