  • Fatalities are expected. However, there have been no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage.
  • Shaking was felt across Venezuela, local media reported.
  • The quake was felt as far away as Bogota, Colombia.
  • It also was felt in Barbados, Grenada, Guyana and Trinidad.
  • “While there have been 17 previous M 6+ earthquakes in this region, large earthquakes are rare; this is the largest historic event within 250 km of this location in the 20th and 21st centuries,” USGS said.

Centered at 27.837°N, 86.077°E the quake occurred at a depth of 15.0 km (9.3 mi), reported USGS/EHP.
