Massive destruction in China caused by rainstorms

Extreme rain events (EREs) destroy tens of thousands of homes in China

Mega disasters caused by rainstorms, flooding and landslides have affected millions of people across large swathes of southern, southwestern and central China, leaving scores of people dead, injured, or missing and about 500,000 others homeless, since early June.

“As of Wednesday [June 17, 2015,] the rainstorms that began pelting southern China on Sunday [June 13, 2015,] had left at least 42 dead and 36 missing,” causing direct economic loss of “2.04 billion yuan (298.68 million U.S. dollars).”

Extreme rain events (EREs) have affected more than 1.43 million people in the flooded provinces of Guangxi, Sichuan, Guangdong, Jiangxi and Fujian, said a report.

Southern China has received “14 rounds of heavy rainfall since June 13th,” which have triggered severe flooding and landslides, the Ministry of Water Resources have said.

“Over 100,000 residents have been evacuated in hardest-hit Fujian, Sichuan, and Guangdong provinces and the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Resulting floods have damaged more than 7,000 houses… The situation remains serious as rainstorms are to continue battering most regions in southern China for the next three days.”

“The death toll from rain-triggered landslides and flooding in south China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region has climbed to 51 with two people still missing, the local government said Saturday.”

“In Rongxian County of Yulin City alone, 30 people were confirmed dead after rain-triggered landslides buried several homes in two mountainside villages on Tuesday, the county’s emergency rescue headquarters said in a press release.

“A similar disaster killed at least a dozen people in Cenxian County, where rescue work was continuing Saturday. Heavy rain and subsequent floods and landslides had hit 42 counties in nine cities including Laibin, Yulin and Wuzhou this week,” the regional flood prevention and drought control office said, Xinhua reported.

At least 11,000 houses have been destroyed, “forcing 200,000 people to evacuate,” the report said.

“As of Saturday, rain-triggered disasters have destroyed 15 reservoirs and about 4,000 irrigation facilities,” the office said.

“Guangxi’s grain output would be down by about 150,850 tonnes.”

“Classes for 65,000 schoolchildren have been suspended and more than 165,000 people have been evacuated as strong rains pounded south China, local authorities said Saturday. Heavy rains since Friday have swept across 36 counties and cities in Hunan Province, destroying more than 2,000 buildings … and damaging more than 10,000 homes.”

“The new round of heavy rains starting Friday also caused havoc in east China’s Jiangxi Province. Apart from causing one death, 44,600 more people were forced to evacuate,” said the Provincial Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters.

“Also in Jiangxi, 1,531 homes were damaged, and the direct economic losses were estimated at 718 million yuan (about 105.59 million U.S.dollars), the provincial headquarters said.”

“The new round of heavy rains also pounded east China’s two other regions of Shanghai and Zhejiang Province, but there were no details of damages.”

Ukraine Atrocity & Nepal Disaster

The 7.8-magnitude earthquake [and its strong aftershocks] that struck Nepal on April 25 has wreaked a mega disaster across the impoverished nation, especially in the densely-populated Kathmandu Valley.

• Fatalities: At least 5,057 soles in Nepal as well as about 100 in neighboring countries (as of April 29).
• Injuries: more than 10,915 (6,000+ “hospitalized”) in Nepal and dozens more in India, Tibet and Bangladesh.
• Homes destroyed or damaged: 600,000 (at least 70,000 houses were destroyed and another 530,000 homes damaged across 39 of Nepal’s 75 districts —UN)
• In need of food assistance: At least 8.5 million people.
• Living in the open: Some 500,000 people remain in the open amid the damp, cold weather.
• Drinking water and sanitation:  Up to 4.2 million people urgently need  safe drinking water and sanitation facilities —UN.

Ukraine Atrocities

At least 6,116 people have been killed (April 17, 2015) and 15,474 others wounded in the Ukrainian conflict, which began in April 2014, said the UN.

[It’s not known whether the UN figures include the victims of the downed Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17. All of the 283 passengers and 15 crew were killed on July 17, 2014, when the plane was apparently shut down over the Ukraine airspace, presumably to widen the scope of the conflict and involve more of the EU member countries in the conflict. As of April 20, 2015 at least 1,236,495 people in Ukraine had registered as IDPs across the country, said the Ministry of Social Policy (MoSP). Additionally, about 801,000 Ukrainians have sought asylum, residence permits or other forms of legal stay in neighboring countries. By April 24, 2015, the total included 659,143 individuals in Russia, 81,044 in Belarus and 47,589 others in Poland, reported UNHCR.

The conflict began after the new government in Kiev sent troops to the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine (Donetsk and Luhansk) because the people refused to recognize the new coup-imposed president.

Super Cyclone PAM probably caused “one of the worst disasters ever seen in the Pacific”

Up to 90 per cent of homes in Vanuatu’s capital Port Villa has reportedly  been seriously damaged by Super Cyclone PAM, leaving “most” of the population homeless, with no information available yet as to the fate of more than 33,000 people who live on the extremely vulnerable outer islands. 

“This is likely to be one of the worst disasters ever seen in the Pacific,” said Oxfam Country Director in Port Vila, Colin Collet van Rooyen.

“Entire communities have been blown away.”

Cyclone PAM made a direct hit on Vanuatu island late Friday, plowing through the archipelago of 65 islands [pop. ~ 270,000] with supercharged force.

“With more than 250,000 people at risk from the severe tropical cyclone there is real concern of a potentially high death toll and of enormous destruction, particularly given the traditional housing that is so prevalent through the islands,” said the report.

“Cyclone Pam has destroyed all but one of mobile towers in Port Vila so no comms between Efate and both nth and sth provinces,” said a UNICEF employee. Read more…

Tuvalu, Kiribati, Solomon Islands

Meantime, Tuvalu’s prime minister has declared a state of emergency, after the deadly cyclone caused widespread flash floods, severely affecting about half of his nation’s population.

The cyclone has also flattened homes, flooded fields and destroyed crops in Kiribati and the Solomon Islands, affecting thousands of families, said reports.

PAM Wreaks “Complete Devastation” in Vanuatu

Super Cyclone PAM devastates Vanuatu islands

The category five monster cyclone smashed into Vanuatu islands in the South Pacific, wreaking “complete devastation.”

There are fears that dozens have lost their lives, and entire villages razed,  in what may be one of the region’s deadliest, and most destructive weather disasters.

Super Cyclone Pam, charged with sustained winds of 275km/h, gusting up to 340 km/hr [FIRE-EARTH estimates based on blog models,] slammed directly into the island nation late Friday.

“The damage is quite extensive in Port Vila but there are so many more vulnerable islands. I can’t even imagine what it’s like in those vulnerable communities,” said an emergency communications officer with World Vision in Port Vila, citing reports that entire villages in remote areas have been destroyed.

“The scene here this morning is complete devastation – houses are destroyed, trees are down, roads are blocked and people are wandering the streets looking for help,” said Tom Skirrow of Save the Children.

“Communications are down across much of the country with the total extent of the devastation unlikely to be known for several days.”

Some 44 people may have lost their lives in Penama province in the north-east of Vanuatu, said the UN’s Office for the Co-ordination for Humanitarian Assistance (UNOCHA).

“There are destructive winds, rain, flooding, landslides, sea surges and very rough seas and the storm is exceedingly destructive there,” said Australian Foreign Minister.

“While it is too early to say for certain, early reports are indicating that this weather disaster could potentially be one of the worst in Pacific history,” said a UNICEF spokesperson.

“The sheer force of the storm combined with communities just not set up to withstand it, could have devastating results for thousands across the region.”

Floodwaters Threaten Pakistan’s Sindh Province with Large-Scale Devastation

Having caused  major catastrophes in Punjab and Kashmir, rising floodwaters could caused  large-scale devastations in Pakistan’s Sindh Province.

In Punjab province alone flooding affected more than 2.2 million people, killing at least 209 and leaving 4,286 others injured, said the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

Some 2,853 villages were severely inundated and 32,243 houses were damaged or destroyed, NDMA reported.

Authorities rescued 41,115 persons, while 200,000 people were displaced.

Kashmir Mega Catastrophe

Meanwhile at least 75,000 people are still awaiting evacuation in partly submerged homes in Srinagar, Kashmir’s capital city, “where roads have been transformed into stagnant canals strewn with sewage, wreckage and dead livestock,” reported Reuters.

“Floating carcasses have become a big source of worry with most houses still waterlogged. We are struggling to get in touch with government health officials,” said a concerned hotelier in Kashmir.

People are worried that hectares of stagnant water covering the city would increase the risk of waterborne diseases spreading.

“The stench of rotting carcasses of cattle was almost unbearable for people in some parts of Srinagar, a city of more than a million people,” said the report.

Flooding and landslides have claimed hundreds of lives left tens of thousands homeless in Indian-administered Kashmir, where the cost of flood damage could top several billion dollars.

EREs have triggered severe flooding inundating about two-thirds Croatia, Reuters quoted the national rescue agency DUZS as saying,

“The biggest threat is in flooded areas around the central towns of Sisak, Hrvatska Kostajnica and Karlovac. Several villages have been evacuated and a state of emergency has been declared in the northern municipality of Nedelisce.”

Wildfires Threaten Hundreds of Homes in California

Madera County – Courtney Fire.  More than 400 Structures with approximately 1,000 residents living in the Northern part of Oakhurst  and a section of Bass Lake near Road 222 have been evacuated, reported CalFire. The fire has destroyed at least a dozen buildings, as of posting.

El Dorado County – King Fire. The King Fire is located in the canyon of the South Fork of the American River northeast of the community of Pollock Pines. Fire is currently traveling to the east/northeast with a rapid rate of spread, said CalFire.

500 Homes remain threatened. Mandatory evacuations are in place for the following areas: Estates at Forebay Road between King of the Mountain Road and Pony Express Trail, as well as all of Whites Meadows Road.

Voluntary Evacuation Advisories are in place for more than 400 homes  located west of Forebay Road from Blair Road to Pony Express Trail. Additional Voluntary Evacuation Advisories are in place for Badger Hill Road, Marmot Road, Lucky Mine Road, Old Blair Mill Road, Apple Creek Ct, Applemont Ranch, Chickaree Lane, Longs Creek, Quick Silver Road, Quick Silver Ct, and Baltimore Road.

Deadly Rainstorms Wreak Havoc across SW China

Extreme Rain Events have left at least 9 cities and 45 towns in SW China in a “State of Disaster,” affecting millions of people, displacing hundreds of thousands, and killing or injuring scores of others. Many people are missing.

“Continuous heavy rains have battered Sichuan since Sept. 8, leaving about 2.5 million people in nine cities in a state of disaster and forcing 160,000 among them to relocate to avoid risks, said the flood control headquarters of Sichuan,” said China’s official news agency, Xinhua.

The rainstorms have destroyed at least 8,200 housing units in the province causing major rivers to flood, said the report.

Raging floodwaters have destroyed or damaged thousands of hectares of crops and swept away scores of livestock.

Extreme rains will continue to pound southwest and central China, according to the National Meteorological Center (NMC) forecast on Sunday.

Thousands of villages submerged under floodwater

The flooding in Jammu and Kashmir has been declared a “national-level disaster” by the Indian Prime Minister.

Severe flooding and landslides caused by extreme monsoon rains have submerged large swathes of India and Pakistan, killing hundreds of people, injuring hundreds more, and leaving hundreds of thousands of others marooned .

More than 15 million people have been affected, as deadly floods and landslides destroy thousands of homes in both Indian-administered Kashmir, Jammu, states of Orissa and Andhra Pradesh, as well as in Pakistani-administered Kashmir and Punjab.

More than a thousand bridges and hundreds of kilometers of roads lay in ruins. Hundreds of thousands of hectares of crops have also been destroyed across the two countries.

Deadly floods bury hundreds of villages in north India

Heavy monsoon rains have triggered severe flooding submerging 500 villages in northern India, killing scores of people and leaving thousands homeless, officials said.

The extreme rain events have also caused numerous landslides across the country. In  neighboring Nepal hundreds are dead or unaccounted for as a result of flooding.

“Nearly 500 villages in Bahraich, Shrawasti, and Lakhimpur Kheri are hit, mostly by a swollen Rapti, with Ghaghara, another perennial trans-boundary river originating on the Tibetan plateau near Lake Mansarovar, flowing above the danger mark in Barabanki, Siddharth Nagar and Faizabad,” said Times of India.

“In Bahraich, around 470 villages of Balha, Mihipurwa and Shivpu blocks are submerged under water following damage to the Saryu canal. District administration feared several hundred people might have got swept away in the flood…”

Forecasters say more rain could exacerbate the flooding in Uttar Pradesh,  India’s most populous state, and Uttarakhand in the Himalayas, Reuters reported chief secretary of Uttar Pradesh as saying.

“With the floods wreaking havoc in Bahraich, Shravasti, Balrampur, Lakhimpur Kheri, Sitapur and Gonda districts in Uttar Pradesh, a population of about four lakh [400,000 people] in the marooned villages has been cut off from the mainland. As the major rivers, Ghagra, Sharda, Rapti and their tributaries are in spate, more villages in these districts are likely to be affected,” said a local report.

Flood waters have caused enormous damage to crops, destroying thousands of kachcha houses and killing thousands of cattle across the region.

There are fears that flooding could also severely damage the country’s sugarcane crops. India is world’s second-largest sugar producer.

Hundred Thousand Homes Destroyed or Damaged in China Rainstorms

Extreme Rain Events (EREs) continue to batter large parts of China, said the country’s National Meteorological Center.

Rainstorms since June 18 have left dozens of people dead or missing, reported Xinhua.

“The Ministry of Civil Affairs said that 4.9 million people in the provinces of Fujian, Guizhou, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi, Sichuan and Yunnan as well as Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Chongqing Municipality had been adversely affected by the rain as of 11 a.m. on Sunday, with 337,000 people relocated and 115,000 in urgent need of basic necessities.”

Hunan Province

In Hunan Province alone, as of June 21, flooding had affected about 3 million people, leaving 171,000 homeless, at least seven dead and four missing across 10  cities and 47 counties, according to the civil affairs authority.

Jiangxi Province [as of June 21, 2014]

“Jiangxi’s local bureau of civil affairs reported that at least five people had died across eight cities and 43 counties in the province as of 10 a.m. on Saturday. Downpours have swept the province since Wednesday,” said the report.

About 789,000 people have so far been affected, and 123,000 relocated.

“The rainstorms, which have caused the collapse of or substantial damage to 4,000 houses and affected 63,100 hectares of crops, have led to direct economic losses of 530 million yuan (84.85 million U.S. dollars) in Jiangxi,” Xinhua reported.

Severe weather have affected at least 118,700 people, leaving 2,341 homeless and  at least  two dead, as of 3 p.m.  Saturday, according to the regional civil affairs department.

Deadly Rainstorms, Severe Floods Affecting Millions in Central and southern China

 “Yellow Alerts” for rainstorm have been renewed for Hunan, Jiangxi, Anhui, Zhejiang, Fujian, Yunnan and Guangdong provinces, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Tibet Autonomous Region, and Shanghai, said the National Meteorological Center warning that torrential rains were expected to continue.

Millions of people are affected, more than 300,000 left homeless and dozens are dead or missing, as rainstorm continue to batter large swathes of central, east  and southern China.

Hunan Province

In Hunan Province, flooding has affected about 3 million people, leaving about 171,000 homeless, at least seven dead and four missing across 10  cities and 47 counties, according to the civil affairs authority.

“The rainstorms also caused severe damage to 9,700 houses and 122,700 hectares of crops, and direct economic losses of 1.57 billion yuan in the province,” said the report.

Jiangxi Province

“Jiangxi’s local bureau of civil affairs reported that at least five people had died across eight cities and 43 counties in the province as of 10 a.m. on Saturday. Downpours have swept the province since Wednesday,” said the report.

Another round of deadly floods destroy thousands of homes in Afghanistan

Flash flooding in northern Afghanistan has killed at least 80 people and forced thousands to flee their homes, authorities said.

At least 2,000 homes have been destroyed and roads and bridges washed away in what has been described as a “major disaster.”

Flooding and landslides have plagued northern Afghanistan since late April, affecting tens of thousands of villagers.

In May, two Mega Landslides killed thousands of people and buried a large section of the main north-south road in the Tashkurghan gorge , effectively cutting off the north of the country.

• At least 2,500 people were killed after the two massive landslides in NE Afghanistan.

• The landslide site was designated as a ‘mass grave’ by the provincial governor of Badakhshan province.

• More than 1,000 houses have been destroyed or affected by the massive landslide

• The landslide buried entire villages and left thousands of people homeless according to the UN mission in Afghanistan.

• The disaster is the latest in a series of calamities caused by extreme rain events and flooding in which hundreds of people  in north and east Afghanistan have perished.

• “There were more than 1,000 families living in that village. A total of 2,100 people – men, women and children – are trapped,” a spokesman for the provincial governor told Reuters.

• “As the part of the mountain which collapsed is so big, we don’t believe anyone would survive. The government and locals from surrounding villagers are helping with the rescue, and so far they have recovered more then a hundred bodies.”

In late April, a major landslide buried entire villages leaving hundreds dead, and many more injured  in northeastern Afghanistan.

Flash floods in northern Afghanistan destroyed dozens of villages and thousands of homes, killing at least 350 people, and leaving many others missing. Hundreds more are injured and tens of thousands reportedly displaced.

The floods followed a two-day extreme rain event, which inundated three provinces of Faryab, Jowzjan and Sar-e Pul, said Afghanistan’s Natural Disaster Management Agency.

The floods destroyed dozens of villages leaving tens of thousands of farm animals dead, the agency said.

Flash flood triggered a massive  landslide in NE Afghanistan destroying  dozens of village and leaving at least 350 people dead. Thousands of farm animals also perished.

20,000+ homes destroyed or damaged, 100,000 people evacuated in S China

The latest round of Extreme Rain Events have triggered major flooding across south China affecting about 2 million people, and leaving at least two dozen dead in Guizhou and Sichuan provinces as well as Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

In Guizhou Province alone, flooding has severely affected more than 1.2 million people in 44 counties forcing mass evacuation of at least 88,000 people. At least 18,000 homes were damaged or destroyed, said the Guizhou Civil Affairs Department, reported Xinhua.

Power, water and communications lines were cut off across most of Guizhou Province, said reports.

Extreme Rain Events Trigger Severe Flooding in SW China’s Guizhou and Sichuan provinces

Severe flooding and mudslides have affected more than six million people in central and southern China leaving at least 500,000 people homeless since late last month.

Hanan province issued a red alert last week as Extreme Rain Events continued to pound the region unleashing more floods and mudslides.

Floods have claimed at least 12 lives with two people reported missing, officials said.

“More than 1.37 million people in eight cities and prefectures in [Hunan] province have been affected, and 3,431 houses have collapsed [and more than 50,000 people were relocated.] Landslides triggered by rainstorms have occurred on sections of the No.209 national highway in Xiangxi Tu and Miao Autonomous Prefecture,” said a report.

Destructive floods leave 500,000 people homeless in China

Severe flooding and mudslides have affected more than six million people in central and southern China leaving at least 500,000 people homeless.

Hanan province issued a red alert as Extreme Rain Events continued to pound the region unleashing more floods and mudslides.

Floods have claimed at least 12 lives with two people reported missing, officials said.

South China

Meanwhile, the death toll from extreme weather events in south China reached 40 on Tuesday, with several others reported missing.

Flooding and landslides in 8 southern provinces have affected at least 5.51 million people, destroying tens of thousands of homes and leaving 447,000 homeless.

About 264,800 hectares of crops have been destroyed in flood related disasters, causing direct economic losses of about $1.18 billion, said the report.

Extreme climatic events, related conflicts displace 144 million in the Horn of Africa

Some 144 million people have been displaced  in the Horn of Africa region between 2008 and 2012 due to the mega disasters caused by climate change, according to a joint report by the Institute for Environment and Human Security of United Nations University, and the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC).

The new report by said thousands of people in the Horn of Africa are at risk of being displaced across borders as extreme weather increases in frequency.

“As extreme weather increases in intensity thousands are at risk of being displaced. Many of the displaced receive some assistance, but the support varies. There is a need for more predictive protection and assistance. We must start in the hardest affected regions,” according to NRC spokesperson.

The majority of those displaced in the four-year period fled from floods, storms and wildfires and other impacts of climate change, said  the report.

Most of the victims remained in their own countries as internally displaced people, but many fled across the borders to neighboring countries.

“Drought forces people to leave their homes in Somalia and Ethiopia and flee to Kenya, Egypt or Yemen. Most of those fleeing are pastoralists, small scale farmers and agro-pastoralists,” said the report.

The impact of climate-related disasters are intensified by ethnic and political discriminations, according to the report, which cites  armed conflict and lack of humanitarian access in Somalia as major contributing  factors  to worsening conditions caused by the drought and famine.

People are forced to cross borders when Extreme Weather Events flood their habitat, or destroy their crops, said the report.

“Individuals leave for another country for a variety of reasons, but in many cases the driving factor is related to the loss and deterioration of livelihood,” said representative from UNU.

Balkans faces risk of disease after flood disasters

Worst floods ever recorded in the Balkans, which triggered thousands of landslides, have devastated large swathes of Bosnia, Serbia, and Croatia, destroying or damaging more than 100,000 homes, thousands of other buildings and much of the public infrastructure.

The disasters killed dozens of people across the Balkans; however, the death toll might rise because about 600 people are missing or unaccounted for in Serbia.

Tens of thousands of animals also perished in the disasters, creating a very serious health risk for populations in the devastated areas.

Rotting animal carcasses, food and waste in rising temperatures pose a serious risk of contaminating ground and surface waters.

Serbia’s government has made an appeal for disinfectants, quicklime, chlorine bleach and protection gear.

In Bosnia, there is the added danger posed by hundreds of thousands of landmines left over from the Bosnian War (1992-95) that may have been moved by the floodwaters and landslides from marked minefields.

Cost of Damage

Based on the latest damage data available, FIRE-EARTH Models estimate the total cost of damage caused by the historic flooding and landslides across the Balkans at more than $6 billion.

Other Disasters, States of Emergency

Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, has declared a State of Emergency following widespread damage caused by flooding storms on May 12.

At least 736 homes have reported flood damage in Summit County, with nine of the homes suffering significant structural damage, according to the Falls Mayor.

Siberian Irkutsk region has declared a state of emergency after forest fires spread to local villages, prompting mass evacuations.

Some 77 forest fires have consumed more than 40,000 hectares of land in the region.

Hundreds of people have been evacuated from the village of Dalny, where fires have destroyed two dozen homes, the the Emergency Situations Ministry said, Interfax reported.

Deadly floods affect one million, displace 500,000, destroy or damage at least 100,000 homes in Bosnia

The worst floods ever to hit the Balkans have affected more than a million Bosnians, killing dozens of people, forcing more than half million out of their homes,  and destroying or damaging at least 100,000 homes.

Extreme rain events triggered deadly flooding and thousands of landslides, affecting about a third of the country, leaving more than a million people (quarter of the Bosnia’s population) without clean water.

The government has compared the “terrifying” destruction to the   1992-95 war, in which ethnic cleansing forced more than a million people out of their homes.

“We have some indications that a half a million Bosnians have either been evacuated or have left their homes because of flooding or landslides,” said a senior civil defense official in Bosnia.

• Several towns in Serbia, including Krupanj in the Mačva District (population; 5,000) have been almost completely destroyed.

• Thousands, possibly tens of thousands, of livestock have perished across the flood-stricken regions.

“The consequences of the floods are terrifying. The physical destruction is not less than the destruction caused by the war. During the war, many people lost everything. Today, again they have nothing,” said Bosnia’s Foreign Minister.

Landmines

Meanwhile, Bosnia’s Center for the Removal of Landmines has renewed its warning concerning mines laid during the 1992-95. They fear that an estimated 750,000 mines could be dislodged by floods and landslides.

Super Typhoon HAIYAN: Death Toll Continues to Rise

Philippine Mega Disaster:  Death toll climbs to 5,680 with 1,779 others missing

Death toll from Super Typhoon HAIYAN climbed to 5,680, after 48 bodies were recovered on Monday, said the Philippine National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

The number of people missing also rose to 1,779, with 26,233 others reportedly injured due to HAIYAN [ locally known as YOLANDA.]

Total number of people affected by the Super Typhoon has officially climbed to more than 11.2 million [U.N. estimate is about 13.5 million,] with the number of displaced also revised up to more than 4 million.

The number of houses destroyed or damaged has increased to 1,180,837 units including 587,035 units completely flattened, according to NDRRMC SitRep No. 51, released today.

The total cost of damage to infrastructure and agriculture [the estimate excludes cost of rebuilding homes] is pegged at over PhP34.36 billion [$1=43.77 Philippines peso] with PhP17.3 billion for losses in infrastructure and PhP17 billion for agriculture in Regions IV-A, IV-B, V, VI, VII, VIII, and CARAGA, said the report.

State of National Calamity

The Philippine President issued Presidential Proclamation No. 682 declaring a state of national calamity on 11 November 11, 2013.

Extent of Crop Damage

“High winds, heavy rains and localized floods destroyed houses and infrastructure, including irrigation facilities, and resulted in losses of the main staple rice paddy, sugarcane and coconut crops, as well as livestock, poultry and fisheries,” said the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

HAIYAN destroyed about 153,500 hectares (ha) of rice paddy, maize and other high value crops, including 77,500 ha of rice and 21,000 ha of maize crops, it added [figures are rounded to the nearest 100.]

Philippines imports of rice are to increase by 20 percent next year to 1.2 million metric tons, said FAO.

Million People Affected after Earthquakes Hit NE China

45,000 People lose their homes after a swarm of earthquakes strikes China

The quakes have affected more than 260,000 families, or at least one million people, in 125 villages across two counties in NE China’s Jilin Province, leaving more than 45,000 people displaced, and causing direct economic losses of 2 billion yuan ($328 million), said Xinhua.

A significant quake measuring 5.8Mw, centered at 44.6ºN, 124.1ºE, struck at a depth of about 9km at 6:04am Beijing Time, said China Earthquake Networks Center.

A significant aftershock measuring 5.0Mw struck close to the epicenter at a depth of about 8km some 28 minutes later. The quakes were followed by a swarm of at least 280 smaller aftershocks.

There were no reports of casualties available, as of posting (November 23, 2013 at 14:50UTC).

“All schools and kindergartens in Songyuan City have been suspended due to the quakes. Education authorities in Qian Gorlos Mongol Autonomous County have asked schools in the region to close for the following one to two weeks,” reported Xinhua.

The latest shocks followed another shallow quake measuring 5.3Mw, centered at 44.7ºN, 124.1ºE,  which struck at a depth of about 8km, shaking the city of Songyuan in northeast China’s Jilin Province on Friday at 4:18 p.m. , the EQ Center said.

“The earthquake lasted for about 3 seconds. I felt it was more severe than the last time, and my house was partly damaged,” a resident in Yingtu Village of Qian Gorlos Mongol Autonomous County, told Xinhua.
