Mexico’s Popocatépetl volcano erupted on Sunday (July 2), ejecting 2-km high column of smoke and ash into air, officials said.
Ash fallout was reported across multiple areas in Mexico State, including Ozumba, Amecameca, Tlalmanalco, Chalco, Ayapango, Tenango del Aire and San Pedro Nexapa.
Alert level for the volcano was raise to “Yellow,” which means it could continue to erupt at low to intermediate intensity, as authorities advised nearby residents to evacuate areas within a 12km.

Mexico has a long history of destructive earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. In September 1985, a magnitude 8.1 earthquake killed more than 9,500 people in Mexico City. In southern Mexico, Volcán de Colima and El Chichón erupted in 2005 and 1982, respectively. Paricutín volcano, west of Mexico City, began venting smoke in a cornfield in 1943; a decade later this new volcano had grown to a height of 424 meters. Popocatépetl and Ixtaccíhuatl volcanos (“smoking mountain” and “white lady”, respectively), southeast of Mexico City, occasionally vent gas that can be clearly seen from the City, a reminder that volcanic activity is ongoing. In 1994 and 2000 Popocatépetl renewed its activity forcing the evacuation of nearby towns, causing seismologists and government officials to be concerned about the effect a large-scale eruption might have on the heavily populated region. Popocatépetl volcano last erupted in 2010.

The 5,426-meter stratovolcano, Mexico’s most active volcano, erupted overnight ejecting a large column of ash into the air and spewing lava.
The latest eruption forced the authorities to close Puebla airport, located east of the volcano, urging residents to wear masks and avoid inhaling volcanic ash.
About 25 million people live within a 100-kilometer radius of the active volcano.
Popocatépetl Volcano (“smoking mountain” in Aztec) is North America’s 2nd-highest volcano. The massive stratovolcano stands 5,450m high and lies about 65 kilometers (40 miles) southeast of Mexico City (19.023°N, 98.622°W) in the eastern segment of the Trans-Mexican volcanic belt.

Violent eruption at Mexico’s Popocatépetl produced a Pyroclastic surge climbing 2km above the crater and setting the nearby forest alight, said Mexico’s National Center for Disaster Prevention (CENPRED ).
The explosion also caused ashfall in the towns of Juan C. Bonilla and Coronango, in the state of Puebla.

The following is latest report posted at CENPRED official website:
As of posting, the volcano exhibited “continuous emission of steam and gas” in easterly direction (image 9), said the report.
April 05 at 11:15 (16:15 GMT)
During the last 24 hours, 96 long period events were registered and five explosions yesterday at 16:44 h (image no. 1) and 20:31 h the latter generated a ash column of 2 km height above the crater, which moved towards the northeast. Likewise, the fall of incandescent fragments were observed, mainly on the east and southeast slopes of the volcano at a distance of 3.5 km, because of this some fires were generated in the upper part of the forest (image 2), (image 3), (image 4), (video 1), (video 2), (video 3). This explosion caused ash fall in the towns of Juan C. Bonilla and Coronango, both in the state of Puebla. The remaining three explosions were recorded today at 06:54, 7:14 and 07:49 h (image 5), (image 6), (image 7), (image 8).
Additional materials: (video 4), (video 5), (figure 10), (figure 11), (figure 12).
CENAPRED emphasizes that people SHOULD NOT go near the volcano, especially near the crater, due to the hazard caused by ballistic fragments (image 13).
This type of activity is included within the scenarios Volcanic Traffic Light Yellow Phase 2.
The scenarios forecast for this phase are:
1. Explosive activity of low to intermediate level.
2. Ash fall in nearby towns.
3. Possibility of short range pyroclastic flows and mudflows .
Special emphasis is placed on the following recommendations: Continue the safety radius of 12 km, so staying in that area is not allowed.

About a million dead fish washed up on the shores of Lake Cajititlan near the city of Guadalajara in Jalisco state, western Mexican, local media reported.
Officials say a wastewater treatment plant may have dumped untreated effluent in the lake thereby reducing the amount of oxygen in the water and suffocating the popoche chub freshwater fish.
In 2014, about 200 tons of dead popoche were removed from the lake.

Colima volcano is behaving “atypically,” showing signs similar to a major eruption in 1913, said Mexico’s interior ministry.
The 1913 eruption, the largest on record since 1576, lasted for 5 days between January 20 and 24.
About 800 residents within a 12-km radius of the volcano have been evacuated. The authorities have also closed the airport in the state of Colima, due to the large amounts of volcanic ash “falling in the area,” said reports.
The volcano began erupting early Thursday and became increasingly active, spewing lava and large amounts of ash.
Colima, kla, Volcán de Fuego [“Volcano of Fire,”] is one of the most active volcanoes in Mexico. It is also potentially the most hazardous volcano in the country, with more than 300,000 people living within a 40-km radius of the mountain.

The governor of Texas has declared States of Disaster in 24 additional counties, bringing the total to 37, as severe weather and deadly flash flooding leave trails of destruction across the state.
TO ALL TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS SHALL COME:
I, GREG ABBOTT, Governor of the State of Texas, issued an Emergency Disaster Proclamation on May 11, 2015, certifying that the severe weather, tornado and flooding event that began on May 4, 2015, has caused a disaster in Bosque, Clay, Denton, Eastland, Gaines, Montague and Van Zandt counties in the State of Texas. On May 15, 2015, I amended my proclamation of May 11, 2015, to include Cooke, Grimes, Hood, Navarro, Smith and Wise counties. Severe weather, tornadoes and flooding continue in these and other counties in Texas.
THEREFORE, in accordance with the authority vested in me by Section 418.014 of the Texas Government Code, I do hereby declare a state of disaster in Archer, Bastrop, Bosque, Caldwell, Cass, Clay, Collin, Cooke, Denton, Dewitt, Eastland, Fannin, Gaines, Grayson, Grimes, Harrison, Hays, Henderson, Hidalgo, Hill, Hood, Houston, Jasper, Johnson, Kendall, Montague, Navarro, Newton, Nueces, Parker, San Jacinto, Smith, Van Zandt, Walker, Wichita, Wilson and Wise counties.
At least 5 people have been killed in Texas and Oklahoma, and more than a dozen are missing.
“This is the biggest flood this area of Texas has ever seen,” said Abbott.
“It is absolutely massive,” he said, describing the relentless power of the wave of water as “tsunami-like.”
The Lone Star State has also been pounded by tornadoes, heavy rain and thunderstorms that have forced mass evacuations.
Meantime, a 9-pm to 7-am curfew in Wimberley and San Marcos was extended for a second night on Monday, said Hays County officials.
A tornado has swept through Ciudad Acuna, a city of 125,000 across from Del Rio, Texas, destroying homes and tossing cars. At least 13 people were killed, and five others reported as missing, officials said.
The twister, which has destroyed or damaged about 800 homes, was the first ever to hit Ciudad Acuna since the city was founded more than 100 years ago, local media quoted the Mayor as saying.
