Disaster declared in central Thailand province

The provincial governor of Prachuap Khiri Khan has declared disaster in the area, after eight districts were buffeted by powerful storms.

  • Prachuap Khiri Khan is a central province of Thailand located in the northern part of the Malay Peninsula, about 240 km (150 miles) south of the capital Bangkok.
  • “The storms hit the province at 3am on Saturday followed by heavy rains and high waves up to four metres in the Gulf of Thailand,” said a report.

Latest States of Emergency Declared in the U.S. and Canada

Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada: Massive power outage as ice storm hits region

Three Ontario townships — Wellesley, Woolwich and North Perth — have declared states of emergency after ice storm hit Waterloo Region, said a report.

Minnesota: Gov. Dayton has declared a state of emergency in SW Minnesota, after activating the National Guard.

“Six to 8 inches of wet snow fell early Thursday on top of the thick layer of ice that accumulated Tuesday night in Nobles and Jackson counties,” said a report.

Missouri: Gov. Nixon has declared a state of emergency in Missouri after severe storms, strong thunderstorms, straight line winds and tornadoes caused damage in the St. Louis region and and power outages across southern Missouri, according to the governor’s office.

Tennessee: Officials have declared a state of emergency after reports of a possible tornado and damage in Monroe County, Tennessee, said a report.

Mississippi. Gov. Bryant has declared a State of Emergency for Kemper and Noxubee counties due to the damage caused by severe storms and tornadoes, according to the governor’s office.

EF-4 Tornado Struck Lamar and Forrest County, MS

The tornado that struck Lamar and Forrest County, MS on February 10, was a low end EF-4  tornado with maximum wind force of about 170mph, and a damage path of 20 miles, National Weather Service (NWS) reported.

  • “Additionally, multiple other locations along the path through West Hattiesburg and across the city were rated in the EF-3 range.”
  • 82 people were taken to area hospitals including  63 in Forrest County and 19 in Lamar County, Said NWS.  “There are likely many more minor injuries that have not been accounted for at this time.”

Solomon Islands: Earthquake and Tsunami

A magnitude 8.0 earthquake struck at a depth of 28.7 km (USGS/EHP)  off the coast of Santa Cruz Islands (Temotu Province) in the southeast Solomon Islands archipelago at 1:12 PM UTC on 6 February 2013, triggering 1.0 meter tsunami wave that reached the islands in Temotu Province.

  • Some 600 houses were destroyed, affecting more than 3,300 people, 80 percent of whom have been moved to makeshift shelters.
  • Aftershocks continue to cause damage, hampering the relief operations and preventing people from returning to their homes.
  • “Health services have continued to be disrupted due to ongoing aftershocks, with patients being moved to higher ground.” UN OCHA reported.

Tornadoes Destroy Hundreds of Buildings in Mississippi, Alabama

A swarm of tornadoes rake 7 counties in Mississippi and Alabama, causing significant damage, injuring dozens

Mississippi Gov. declared a State of Emergency for four counties following ‘significant damage’ caused by severe storms and tornadoes. Those counties are: Forrest, Lamar, Lawrence and Marion.

  • The other affected counties were Wayne County, Mississippi, Clarke and Washington counties in Alabama.
  • The worst affected areas were the city of Hattiesburg in Marion County and the nearby town of Petal in  Forrest County
  • Twisters cut power to large section of southern U.S.
