Global Disasters – June 11, 2016

6.5 Million people (39 percent of Malawi’s projected population) likely to be food insecure in 2016/17

At least 6.5 million people, or 39 percent of the country’s projected population of 16.8 million, will not be able to meet their annual food requirements during the 2016/17 consumption period, according to The Ministry of Finance, Economic Planning and Development, through the  Vulnerability Assessment Committee (MVAC).

This represents an increase of 129 percent compared with the corresponding figure of 2.8 million people for the 2015/16 consumption period. In order to ensure that the affected people survive up to the next harvest period without disrupting their socioeconomic livelihoods, the total humanitarian food assistance that is required is estimated at the equivalent of 493,000 metric tonnes of maize, with an estimated cash value of MK148 billion. However, the estimated humanitarian food assistance declines to the equivalent of 375,000 metric tonnes of maize if we adjust for the fact that some of the affected people may sell their assets in order to acquire food.

“The food shortage is largely a result of the El Nino climatic episode experienced across the country during the 2015/16 agricultural reason,” the government said.

The MVAC figures stated above relate to the total food requirement for the vulnerable population only. This is lower than the maize consumption deficit of 790,000 metric tonnes affecting 8.4 million people, as reported by the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development based on the Second Round Crop Estimates released in April 2016. The main difference between the two sets of figures arises from the fact that part of the maize consumption deficit relates to the consumption needs of those who can afford to procure it on the market, if available, without the need for humanitarian support. The MVAC figures exclude such consumption needs which are, nevertheless, a significant part of the Government’s overall intervention plans.

Iraq

More than 3.3 million Iraqis, or about 10 per cent of the population, have been displaced due to acts of violence perpetrated by the Saudi-backed Wahhabi terrorists (ISIL) since the start of 2014.

At least 500,000 people fled Mosul, Iraq’s second largest city, when terrorists stormed the city in June 2014. Many have been displaced multiple times, and most face extreme hardship.

South Sudan

More than 2.4 million people have been displaced since fighting broke out in Juba in December 2013. This includes 720,394 people who have crossed into neighboring countries. Six Protection of Civilian (PoC) sites are currently sheltering 169,983 internally displaced people (IDPs): 98,653 in Bentiu; 40,448 in Malakal; 27,959 in Juba; 2,004 in Bor; 700 in Melut; and, 219 in Wau, said the UN Mission in South Sudan.

Somalia

Extreme rain events in the upper part of the Ethiopian highlands have caused river Shabelle to overflow. The flood waters have destroyed crops and that fields remain inaccessible.

“The flood has destroyed almost everything. The majority of the community here operates a small business in a local market. They could no longer work as the place is submerged with water. We do hope in a month’s time it will dry up and we can start rebuilding our lives,” said a local elder.

[District of] Beletweyne hosts 31,000 displaced people, the majority of whom have fled conflict in the neighboring districts of Jalalqsi and Bulle Burte. The residents who live in a low-lying areas have moved to higher ground in El Jaale, five kilometres from Beletweyne.

“This flooding is the worst in years. It covered most of the town and surroundings. As the people move to higher grounds, they are in need of everything. The ICRC is providing food and other basic items, clean water and health care to the most affected communities. This will enable them to hold on as they start to rebuild their homes,” said the region’s field coordinator for the ICRC in Somalia.

Iraqi PM Demands Withdrawal of Turkish Battalion Near Mosul

Turkey protecting terrorists partners in Mosul?

Iraqi Prime Minister has condemned a Turkish military incursion into its northern territory, demanding their immediate withdrawal.

The incursion of “around one armed battalion [up to 300 troops] with [dozens] of tanks and cannons” into the Nineveh Province was a violation of Iraq’s sovereignty, said Mr Abadi in a statement released on December 5.

Turkish officials claim the troops were deployed on Friday (December 4) as part of a “routine exercise” to train Iraqi troops near the city of Mosul, which was captured by Daesh terrorists 16 months ago.

Iraq’s Foreign Ministry has described the troops movement into the northern Iraqi province as an “incursion,” rejecting the Turkish claim and asserting that the military operation was not coordinated with the federal government in Baghdad, said reports.

“The Turkish sources maintained that Turkey already had troops in Iraq’s autonomous Kurdistan region, and the United States and other countries involved in fighting IS there were aware it was moving some troops to the Mosul area,” said a report.

“U.S. officials in Washington said they were aware of Turkey’s move, but it was not coordinated with the anti-IS coalition operating in northern Iraq.”

Turkey stands accused of buying stolen oil from Daesh terrorists [aka, Islamic State, ISIL.] The large scale illegal oil trade is helping the terrorist to rake in about 3 million dollars per day.

Daesh kidnapped 49 staff from the Turkish consulate in Mosul after seizing control of the city in June 2014; however, they released everyone unharmed three months later, AFP reported.

Iraq October Death Toll

Posted by feww on November 3, 2015

Iraq Govt Not Protecting Citizens Against ISIL Terrorism

The casualty figures released by UNAMI show a total of 714 Iraqis were killed and another 1,269 wounded in acts of terrorism, violence and armed conflict in October 2015*.

The number of civilians killed was 559 (including 25 civilian police), and the number of civilians injured was 1,067 (including 43 civilian police), said the UN in Iraq.

Additionally, 155 members of the Iraqi Security Forces (including Peshmerga, SWAT and militias fighting alongside the Iraqi Army / Not including casualties from Anbar Operations) were killed and 202 injured.

*CAVEATS: In general, UNAMI has been hindered in effectively verifying casualties in conflict areas. UNAMI could not obtain the casualty figures for the month of October from the Anbar Health Directorate. In some cases, UNAMI could only partially verify certain incidents. UNAMI has also received, without being able to verify, reports of large numbers of casualties along with unknown numbers of persons who have died from secondary effects of violence after having fled their homes due to exposure to the elements, lack of water, food, medicines and health care. For these reasons, the figures reported have to be considered as the absolute minimum.

According to Iraq Body Count, the October casualty toll included 1,150 civilians killed.

  • At least 643 people, including dozens of women and children, were executed.
  • Up to 59 others (bodies abandoned) may have also been executed.
  • At least 222 people ( including 12 children) were executed and 20 prisoners tortured to death in Mosul.

Additionally, three doctors were executed in Mosul on November 2, 2015.

ISIS terrorists seize Iraqi cities forcing at least 1 million people to flee their homes

Saudi-backed ISIS terrorists have seized key Iraqi city of Mosul and nearly all of the surrounding Nineveh Province [population: ~ 3.3 million,] while fighting continues in Anbar province, forcing at least 1 million people from both provinces to flee their homes.

Iraq’s Foreign Minister has called on his country’s leaders to face “the serious, mortal threat.” Adding that “there has to be a quick response to what has happened.”

The terrorist have also attacked Tikrit and are now in control of some parts of the city, as well as the town of Baiji, known for its oil refinery, according to reports quoting Iraqi security sources.

“The Baiji refinery can process 300,000 barrels per day and supplies oil products to most of Iraq’s provinces and is a major provider of power to Baghdad,” Reuters reported.

The towns of Hawijah, Zab, Riyadh, Abbasi and Rashad in south and west of the city of Kikruk, about 250 km north of Baghdad, reported Xinhua.

Anbar Province

The UN refugee agency on Friday, June 6 said that ongoing violence in central Iraq’s Anbar province has displaced almost half-a-million civilians since January. “With a deteriorating security situation, it is also becoming harder for humanitarian actors to reach those in need,” said a UNHCR spokesman.

He told journalists in Geneva that the Iraqi government puts the number of displaced since January at 434,000 men, women and children. “However, the full scale of the displacement from this under-reported conflict is unknown, as the Iraqi authorities have had to suspend registration over the past month because of insecurity,” he said, adding: “UNHCR believes the current figure is now close to 480,000.”

A further displacement last month occurred when the ISIL terrorists deliberately breached a dam in Anbar’s Abu Ghraib district, flooding the entire area and forcing some 72,000 people to flee their homes.

ISIS terrorists seize Iraq city of Mosul, free thousands of prisoners

UPDATE: The speaker of parliament told reporters late Tuesday that “terrorists” controlled the entire of Nineveh province [Population: ~ 3.3 million.] More than 250,000 people have reportedly fled Nineveh to Kurdish-controlled regions in northern Iraq.

ISIS terrorists have seized key Iraqi city of Mosul [Population: ~ 1.8 million,] capital of Nineveh Province, driving back government forces, according to reports quoting senior officials.

“The city of Mosul is outside the control of the state and at the mercy of the militants,” a senior Iraqi official told reporters.

Mosul is the second city to be seized by the Saudi-backed terrorist group known as the “Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant” (ISIL or ISIS).  In January terrorists seized the city of Fallujah, and parts of Ramadi, the capital of Anbar province, forcing more than 70,000 people to flee their homes.

The much larger city of Mosul and surrounding Ninevah province are a major export route for Iraqi oil and a gateway to Syria, experts say.

The Iraqi Prime Minister has called on parliament to declare a state of emergency in response to the escalation, reports said.

ISIS have freed more than 2,500 inmates from a “counter terrorism prison,” according to numerous reports posted on the Internet by locals.

 Bloodbath Continues

Meantime, ISIS and its allies stepped up their terrorist attacks, killing or wounding dozens of people in the central town of Baquba in a double bomb attack, which targeted a funeral procession.

The terrorist attacks in western and northern Iraq have left scores of people dead or wounded since early June.

At least 1,027 civilians were killed in Iraq during the month of May, with the 2014 toll now standing at 5,595 civilians killed and thousands of others wounded.

Some 8,868 Iraqis, including 7,818 civilians and civilian police personnel, were killed in 2013, according to the United Nation’s Assistance (!) Mission in Iraq (UNAMI). [Iraq Body Count puts the number of civilians killed in violent acts at 9,475 for 2013.]
