State of Emergency Declared for 35 Oklahoma Counties

Severe storms, straight-line winds and flooding plague Oklahoma

Gov. Mary Fallin has declared a state of emergency for 35 Oklahoma counties battered by severe storms, straight-line winds and flooding.

A ferocious storm packing 80-mph winds uprooted trees and knocked out power to at least 125,000 customers.

Additional counties could be added to the declaration as damage assessments continue, Fallin said.

The governor’s office earlier issued the following Press Release:

OKLAHOMA CITY – Governor Mary Fallin today declared a State of Emergency for 35 Oklahoma counties due to severe storms, straight-line winds and flooding that began Tuesday.

The counties included in the declaration are: Adair, Atoka, Cherokee, Coal, Craig, Delaware, Creek, Haskell, Hughes, Kay, Latimer, Le Flore, Lincoln, Logan, Mayes, McIntosh, Muskogee, Noble, Nowata, Okfuskee, Okmulgee, Osage, Ottawa, Pawnee, Payne, Pittsburg, Pontotoc, Pottawatomie, Pushmataha, Rogers, Seminole, Sequoyah, Tulsa, Wagoner and Washington.

“Heavy winds and flooding have lead to damage throughout the state and left many without power, especially in the Tulsa metro,” said Fallin. “Both government and private sector resources are being utilized to help those affected.”

The declaration can be amended to add additional counties if conditions warrant.

Since Tuesday evening, these Oklahoma counties have experienced damaging straight-line winds, flooding and other severe weather as well as widespread power outages in some areas. Damage assessments are ongoing.

Under the Executive Order, state agencies can make emergency purchases and acquisitions needed to expedite the delivery of resources to local jurisdictions. The declaration also marks a first step toward seeking federal assistance should it be necessary.

Powerful Tornadoes Strike in Six U.S. States

State of emergency declared as deadly tornadoes tear through Oklahoma

Powerful twisters strike U.S. states of Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Kansas and Illinois, and Oklahoma.

Governor Fallin declared a State of Emergency for 16 Oklahoma counties: Caddo, Cleveland, Comanche, Creek, Garfield, Grant, Greer, Kiowa, Lincoln, Logan, McClain, Okfuskee, Oklahoma, Pawnee, Payne and Pottawatomie.

The state of emergency was declared in the 16 counties because they sustained  the heaviest damage from the twisters, straight-line winds, fist-size hail and flash flooding, which began late Saturday evening.

The worst damage was caused by a deadly tornado that struck near the town of Shawnee, about 50km from Oklahoma City, leveling a mobile home park.

At least one person was confirmed dead in Pottawatomie County and two dozen others were reportedly injured.

In addition to Shawnee, several other towns and communities were severely affected by the extreme weather including Bethel Acres, Carney, Edmond, Little Axe, Norman and Wellston.

Storm-related injuries have also been reported in other parts of Oklahoma, as well as in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Illinois and Iowa.

Severe Weather Threat to Continue Through Monday Across the Central States —NWS

After over 300 reports of severe weather on Sunday, another round of dangerous severe weather is expected Monday with the greatest threat once again in the southern Plains targeting Oklahoma and parts of Kansas, Missouri and Arkansas. However, severe weather is possible much further north towards Chicago and Madison as well.

Drought Expands in the U.S. Plains

Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska and Oklahoma plagued by severe drought or worse

Severe drought has spread to 87.25 percent of the High Plains, up from 86.20 percent previous week, with 61.27 percent of the region rated in extreme drought, up from 60.25 percent.

• The entire land area in Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska and Oklahoma is currently affected by severe drought or worse.

About 58.87 percent of the contiguous United States was in at least “moderate” drought as of January 15, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.

Oklahoma declares a state of emergency amid persistent drought

About 16,000 residents in rural Payne, Pawnee, and Lincoln counties are running out of water, prompting emergency managers to declare states of emergency.

• The water level at Lone Chimney Lake, the area’s only source, has dropped under four feet—11.5 feet below normal, reports said.

• “This month the small Oklahoma farming town of Wapanucka lost water completely when the spring-fed wells the community relies on ran dry. Officials closed schools and residents had to do without tap water until the town could run a line to a neighboring water district.”

“Last summer’s extreme weather locked two-thirds of the U.S. continental land mass in severe drought, cutting production of the biggest crop, corn, by 27 percent from early-season estimates,” said a report.

State of Emergency Declared for 35 Oklahoma Counties

Tornadoes, severe storms, hail and flooding force OK governor to declare State of Emergency

The storms crossed Okla. Tuesday night and continued battering the state into Wednesday morning causing severe damage to homes, businesses and vehicles, as well as numerous power outages.

“The severe storms that crossed the state on Tuesday left behind massive damage to personal and business property that will need to be repaired,” state Attorney General said.

The declaration has also activated the state’s price-gouging statute, which prohibits increases of more than 10 percent in the price of goods and services during the emergency period.

  • “The warming trend continues this week across the southwestern United States. Oklahoma has been rattled by dozens of earthquakes, including a record-setting magnitude 5.6 shock that caused damage in central parts of the state. Tornadoes, straight-line winds and torrential rains have also caused damage in 20 counties.

• Turkey. A significant aftershock measuring 5.6Mw struck about 16 km (9 miles) south of Van, Turkey toppling at least 2 dozen buildings, killing 12 people and leaving about 100 others unaccounted for.
• The aftershock struck SE of Van, about 35km from a powerful 7.2Mw shock which occurred on October 23, killing more than 600, injuring at least two thousand, destroying scores of homes and leaving tens of thousands of people homeless.
• FIRE-EARTH Forecast: A major earthquake could yet strike Turkey in 2011/2012 with a certainty of 0.7 (P= 66%).
• Alaska, USA. “Storm of epic proportions” pummeled the western coast of Alaska forcing the authorities to issue evacuation orders in dozens of communities.
• The storm was compared to a category 3 hurricane, according to NWS.
• The storm caused coastal surges of more than 3m (10 feet).
•  “Forty years ago, a big storm like this would come through and the sea ice would act as sort of a buffer,” said the director of the Snow and Ice Data Center.
• “The Bering Sea has and always will have these strong storms. What is different now is their potential destructiveness as you lose the sea ice cover.”
• Bangkok, Thailand. Reported death toll in Thailand flooding has climbed to 533 with at least two people reported missing.
• Flooding currently persists in 24 of the country’s 77 provinces, affecting about 3 million residents.
• “The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration today declared parts of three districts flood evacuation areas,” a report said.
• Since late July the floods have destroyed or damaged about 3.3 million homes affecting about 12 million people over 85 percent of the country.
• Australia. Wild storms have buffeted the state of  Victoria in southern Australia, damaging homes, toppling trees knocking down power lines and triggering flash flooding.”
• The storms were described as “dangerous” by the state emergency services (SES) because of the intensity of rainfall.
• “Similar to what we saw in March 2009 where we had hundreds of millions, perhaps even a billion dollars of damage to property and vehicles over that period,” SES officials said.
• Sydney. Meanwhile, Sydney, Australia’s most populated city, experienced its hottest November night on record as the mercury soared to 28.4ºC and stayed above 26.5ºC, or 10 degrees above the average minimum temperature for November.

Drought Conditions to Worsen: FIRE-EARTH

Drought Conditions in the Southern U.S. Continue to Fuel Wildfires

Drought conditions are destroying or causing extensive damage to crops in the southern United States, fueling wildfires that have consumed about 8 million acres, so far this year, killing wildlife and farm animals alike, destroying thousands of homes and leaving tens of thousands of people displaced in at least a dozen states.

In the past 3 days States of Emergency have been declared in at least 87 counties spanning three states of Kansas, Oklahoma and North Carolina.

Kansas Drought

Last week, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) designated 25 more Kansas counties as disaster areas due to crop damage caused by the ongoing drought.

Oklahoma Drought

Drought conditions and raging wildfires in Oklahoma prompted the Lt Gov to declare a state of emergency for 33 counties in that state.

North Carolina Drought

On Friday, N.C. Gov. declared a state of emergency in 29 counties due to drought conditions and raging wildfires.

Note: US Drought Monitor defines drought as “a protracted period of deficient precipitation resulting in extensive damage to crops, resulting in loss of yield.”

The Drought Monitor Report

According to the Drought Monitor report, 70 percent of Texas experienced “exceptional drought,” the worst level of drought, over the period June 17 – June 24, 2011.

Also 91 percent of the sate was stricken by either exceptional or “extreme” drought, the second-worst category.

Arizona was experiencing exceptional or extreme drought in 70 percent of its land up by 3 percent from the previous period.

Louisiana saw exceptional drought rising to 65 percent of the state, a near three-fold increase, and Oklahoma 35 percent, up from about 8 percent previously.

State of Emergency Declared for 33 Oklahoma Counties

Drought conditions and raging wildfires prompt Oklahoma Lt Gov to declare a state of emergency for 33 counties

At least 10 blazes have been reported in Oklahoma, forcing thousands of residents to abandon their homes in western and southern Oklahoma.

“These counties have struggled to see relief from our current drought and with Oklahoma’s high winds, conditions have unfortunately been ideal for devastating wildfires,” Lt. Gov. Lamb said.

A large fire near Lawton has reportedly destroyed up to 20 homes (an unknown number of homes have been damaged), and consumed about 6,000 acres.

Oklahoma City Under Deluge

State of emergency declared in 59 Oklahoma counties, as flash floods inundate parts of Oklahoma City

A boat carrying firefighters sank when they attempted to rescue a 17-year-old  along a North Canadian River tributary that had its banks collapsed, AP reported.

“About 6,700 homes and businesses lost power, according to the Oklahoma Corporation Commission.”

“We had one officer who came in and rescued three carloads of people with families, including children and their pets,” a police spokeswoman said.

“Aerial footage showed one northside Oklahoma City neighborhood where water tinged brick red from nearby Chisholm Creek sat hip-deep in some places and reached the tops of garages in others. Crews ferried families from their homes on small boats and jet skis. At least one person floated his way around on an innertube and other residents gathered in a garage as water worked its way up the driveway,” said the report.

“This is the most flooding that I’ve had since I’ve lived here,” said a resident.

“I’ve never seen it like this,” said another resident. “This is incredible.”

About 200 people have been injured, according to local reports.

Lt. Gov. Jari Askins declared a state of emergency for 59 Oklahoma counties affected by the storms and flooding.
