Swarm of strong quakes leaves dozens dead or missing in the Philippines

A strong earthquake measuring 6.7Mw followed by 3 significant aftershocks and dozens of smaller tremors  struck the central Philippines Negros Region destroying buildings and triggering landslides that left dozens of people dead or missing.

[February 6, 2012]  Mass die-offs resulting from human impact and the planetary response to the anthropogenic assault could occur by early 2016.  SYMBOLIC COUNTDOWN: 1,500 Days Left to the ‘Worst Day’ in Human History

  • Negros Island, Philippines.  A strong earthquake measuring 6.7Mw followed by 4 significant aftershocks and dozens of smaller tremors struck the central Philippines Negros Region destroying buildings and triggering landslides that left dozens of people dead or missing.
    • The mainshock was epicentered at 9.964°N, 123.246°E and struck at a depth of about 20 km (12.4 miles), USGS reported.
    • The shock occurred offshore about 17km south of Guihulngan city (Pop: ~ 120,000) and 70km north of Dumaguete city destroying or damaging hundreds of homes and leaving thousands of people displaced.
    • Significant damage has also been reported in the municipalities of La Libertad (pop: ~ 45,000), Tayasan (pop: ~ 35,000) and Jimalalud  (pop: ~ 30,000), all located in the province of Negros Oriental, local reports said.
    • Heavy damage has also been reported in parts of Cebu City (pop: 1 million), San Carlos City (pop: ~ 150,000) and City of Dumaguete (pop:  ~ 140,000).

New Wave of Powerful Quakes Jolts the Planet

At Least 3 Powerful Earthquakes Strike Mindanao, Philippines

The Largest Quake in the Cluster Measured up  to 7.9M. The quakes struck at a depth of about 600km and did not cause a destructive tsunami.

About a dozen strong aftershocks, the largest of which  measured up to 6.0Mw  followed the mainshock.

    • 149 km (93 miles) S (179°) from Pagadian, Mindanao, Philippines
    • 167 km (104 miles) ESE (106°) from Zamboanga, Mindanao, Philippines
    • 946 km (588 miles) SSE (162°) from MANILA, Philippines
  • Location Uncertainty: horizontal +/- 4.8 km (3.0 miles); depth +/- 7.2 km (4.5 miles)

The other quakes occurred close to the epicenter of the above event and measured up to 7.6 and 7.7 Mw [7.3 and 7.4MW, according to USGS.] The quakes struck at an average depth of about 600km.
