At least 108 people feared dead, 300 others injured, 2.9 million affected
Some 99 fatalities have been confirmed in the magnitude 7.1 earthquake that struck Bohol Island in central Philippines.
Ninety people were killed in Bohol, eight in Cebu and one in Siquijor, said the Philippine National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRM) on Wednesday.
- Some 276 others were injured said NDRRM, including 166 in Bohol, 106 in Cebu.
- Up to a dozen people remain unaccounted for, according to local reports.
According to unconfirmed reports, at least 108 people were killed and 300 others injured in the quake.
A total of about 558,390 families, which translates to more than 2.84 persons have been affected in three island provinces—Bohol, Cebu and Siquijor.
Philippine authorities declared declared states of calamity in Bohol and Cebu provinces after the powerful quake struck on Tuesday.
The M7.1 quake, centered at 9.866°N, 124.011°E, struck at a depth of about 20km about 2km NE of Catigbian, on the island province of Bohol, Philippines at 00:12:32 UTC on Tuesday, October 15, 2013.
The deadly quake occurred about 619km (385mi) SSE of Manila, the Philippine capital, according to USGS/EHP.
Meantime, USGS/EHP has upgraded its Pager status to “Orange,” raising its estimate for the quake fatalities and estimated economic losses.
The ShakeMap has also been upgraded to Level IX, or “violent.”

Powerful M7.1 Quake Causes Much Destruction in Central Philippines+
Philippine authorities have declared declared states of calamity in Bohol and Cebu Provinces after a powerful quake killed at least 80 people and left about 180 others injured, destroying or damaging scores of homes, buildings, historical churches, and causing widespread damage to public infrastructure across the famed tourist islands.
The M7.1 [revised by USGS/EHP] quake struck the island province of Bohol, about 2km NE of Catigbian, Philippines at a depth of about 20km [revised by USGS/EHP] at 00:12:32 UTC on Tuesday, October 15, 2013.
Centered at 9.866°N, 124.011°E, the deadly quake struck about 619km (385mi) SSE of Manila, according to USGS/EHP.
The mainshock was followed by large swarms of at least 400 aftershocks including 10 tremors measuring 5.0Mw or greater, as of posting.
The quake has affected tens of thousands of people, most of whom were left without electricity, tap water, communication or transportation links.
Half dozen bridges have collapsed, and many road have buckled due to the quake energy.

Powerful Quake Strikes 5km E of Balilihan, Bohol Island, Philippines
The quake struck onshore at a depth of about 56.8km. The mainshock was followed by at least 2 significant aftershocks measuring 5.4 and 5.3Mw respectively, as of posting.
- The island province of Bohol is located in the Central Visayas region. Bohol is the tenth largest island of the Philippines with a population of about 1.5 million.
- Full extent of the damage, or injuries was unknown, as of posting, but there were reports of significant damage to roads and electricity lines throughout the region.
- NO tsunami warning or advisories issued.

No destructive widespread tsunami threat exists based on historical earthquake and tsunami data.
However, earthquakes of this size sometimes generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coasts located within a hundred kilometers of the earthquake epicenter. Authorities in the region of the epicenter should be aware of this possibility and take appropriate action.

6,000-acre Powerhouse Fire prompts mandatory evacuations of more than 1,000 homes north of LA
The Los Angeles County fire and Sheriff’s departments ordered evacuations of more than 1,000 residences from San Francisquito Canyon Road up to Elizabeth Lake Road and areas south of Lake Hughes Road Saturday night as the 6,000-acre Powerhouse Fire continued to grow.
More than 1,000 fire crews were attempting to suppress the fire in the Angeles National Forest north of Castaic, in San Francisquito Canyon near a Los Angeles Department of Water and Power station next to Drinkwater Reservoir.
The massive blaze, which broke out Thursday afternoon, was fanned by erratic winds and daytime temperatures topping 105 degrees, and was less than 20% contained, as of posting.

New Mexico Wildfires: State of Emergency Declared in San Miguel County
Fire crews in New Mexico were fighting two growing wildfires Saturday that have consumed thousands of acres and forced hundreds of people from their homes.
Gov. Martinez declared a State of Emergency in San Miguel County and activated the State Emergency Operations Center after a fast-moving blaze dubbed the Tres Lagunas fire threatened about 150 cabins and vacation homes, closed a highway and prompted the authorities to evacuate dozens of residents near Pecos, NM.
The wildfire in New Mexico’s Santa Fe National Forest, located near the communities of Pecos and Tres Lagunas, about 25 miles east of Santa Fe, has consumed nearly 7,000 acres and is threatening the Santa Fe and Las Vegas watersheds.
The National Weather Service had earlier forecast Critical Fire Weather conditions throughout the State and has declared a Red Flag Warning for the northern half of New Mexico through Saturday.
2nd Large Blaze in NM prompts evacuations
Another New Mexico blaze, the Thompson Ridge fire near Jemez Springs, has grown to about 1,500 acres overnight prompting the authorities to evacuate at least 50 homes in the area.

Colorado Wildfire Threatens Several Homes
A wildfire in the Rio Grande National Forest, about 15 miles southwest of the small town of Creede, was reportedly threatening several homes and outbuildings Saturday.

Taiwan: M6.2 earthquake struck 22km SSE of Buli, in central Taiwan (23.794°N, 121.082°E; depth=20.0km ). No reports of damage or injuries were available as of posting.
- The quake reportedly shook buildings in the capital Taipei and caused a gas explosion.
- A villager was killed after being hit by falling rocks, and about two dozen others injured.
- The quake was felt in Hong Kong, some 700km away, reports said.

Hundred Evacuated Amid Flooding in Central Europe
Authorities in Czech Republic have evacuated hundreds of residents near the Vltava river after water levels began reaching critical levels in the capital Prague on Sunday.
Evacuations are also underway in Germany, Austria and Switzerland due to river flooding. Cities of Passau and Rosenheim in southern Germany have issued states of emergency as water levels in Danube and Inn rivers continue to rise.

Earthquake measuring 5.9Mw strikes northern Luzon 425 km north of Manila
The quake was centered near 18.454°N, 120.856°E and occurred on Monday, March 22, 2010 at 19:58:14 UTC , and a depth of 30km.
NO tsunami warning was issued and as of posting there were no reports of casualties or damage.
The epicenter was located about 130km north of the dacitic Ambalatungan Group of volcanoes and 130km west (282 degrees) of the historic Cagua volcano.

Latest Earthquakes Measuring Magnitude 5.5 or Larger since September 18, 2009
The following significant earthquakes occurred within a 12-hour period.
The Bali Earthquake detailed below was reported as a Magnitude 6.0 shock by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center.

The quake was described as “very strong” by a number of people who sopke to the media. People were reportedly jumping from building and running away from their homes in panic after the quake struck. Up to a dozen people have been injured, some hurt jumping from buildings while others were hit by falling debris, according to news reports quoting officials. No tsunami warning was issued.
An earthquake on the main Indonesian island of Java left more than 50 dead on September 2, 2009.
The 9.3 Mw Sumatra-Andaman earthquake which caused the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami that killed an estimated quarter of million people in 11 countries, was the second largest earthquake recorded on a seismograph. The earthquake was also characterized by the longest ever duration of faulting lasting about 10 minutes, which made the entire planet to vibrate about 1 cm triggering earthquakes as far north as in Alaska.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported the quake as a magnitude 6.1 shock on the Richter scale.
Phivolcs said the quake was felt at various intensities in Mamburao and Batangas City; Makati City, Pasay City, Manila City, Tagaytay City and Dasmariñas City; in San Jose town (in Occidental Mindoro), Puerto Galera, Malay (in Aklan), and Guinayangan (in Quezon).
Phivolcs also said it was expecting aftershocks and some damage caused by the earthquake; however, as of posting, no damage had been reported.
There was no report of tsunami after the quake.
