Severe flooding, triggered by week-long extreme rain events in South Africa and Zimbabwe,  continued to spread across southern Mozambique.

“The number of displaced people now stood at 67,995 while nearly 85,000 have been affected by the raging waters in recent days, the UN said, urging donors to urgently make more funds available ‘to help deal with this emergency’ in the impoverished southeast African nation.”

Hunger is setting in among tens of thousands of the victims who are waiting for help to arrive, said a report.

“We are eating grasshoppers,” a flood victim told AFP, adding that she believed they were the “lucky ones.”

“We have family in the town, our aunts. They must be on the rooftops now,” she said.

“We left at midnight without taking food. We have nothing to sleep under.”

The Great Crocodile Escape

A crocodile farm in northern South Africa was forced to open its gates after being inundated, letting loose at least 15,000 crocodiles.

Several ‘mini-tornadoes’ spawned by the remnants of cyclone Oswald have hit the Queensland coast injuring about two dozen people, as severe weather and flooding batters the disaster state.

The tornadoes have damaged scores of homes and forced the evacuation of towns around Bundaberg, reports said.

• Tornadoes  caused severe damage to coastal townships of Bargara and Burnett Heads, both of which have since been declared disaster areas.

Further north, severe flooding in Gladstone led to the city (population ~ 30,000) being declared a disaster zone, and the authorities told at least 2,000 people  to evacuate.

Oklahoma, USA

The drought in Oklahoma has caused more than $2 billion in damage in the past two years, said a report.

• “Cities are facing water rationing, and Tulsa residents will see dying lawns, trees and plants.”
• It cost twice as much to feed the livestock. “A load of feed, which lasts about a month, has gone from about $3,500 to $7,500.”
• USDA has declared 917 counties as primary and contiguous drought disaster areas including the entire state of Oklahoma and parts of 25  other states, in January 2013.

• Queensland, NSW and NT, Australia.   Heavy rainfalls in Queensland have caused extensive flooding, which is exacerbated by the release of water from Brisbane’s Wivenhoe dam, the largest in the area.
  • Residents in the Gold Coast are being evacuated as forecasters predicted strong storms on Wednesday pm.
  •  The water level in Hinze Dam, Gold Coast City’s main water supply, has risen by at least 3 meters in less than 48 hours, reports said.  
    
  • Gold Coast City Council activated the Disaster Co-ordination Center.
  • The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) have evacuated thousands of people and ordered many more in several areas to evacuate.
  • Thousands of people in remain isolated.
  • “Darwin and surrounding areas have been hit by wild weather since Tuesday. Strong wind gusts have knocked down trees and caused power cuts,” a report said, with wind gusts of up to 93kmh recorded at Darwin Airport.
  • Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning, with the possibility of flash flooding throughout the Darwin-Daly and northern Arnhem districts.
• Western Australia.  Multiple bushfire continue to ravage Gascoyne region in Western Australia.
  • Month-long blazes have consumed more than 600,000 hectares, which includes grazing land, and destroyed  infrastructure in the region.
  • The State Government has so far rejected calls to declare the fire-ravaged area a disaster zone, a report said.

Other Global Disasters

• Virginia, USA.The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has declared 20 counties and 4 independent cities in Virginia as agricultural disaster areas because of losses caused two separate disaster conditions.
  • Disaster Conditions No. 1: Craig, Frederick and Page counties have been designated primary natural disaster areas because of losses caused by excessive heat that occurred May 1, 2011, through Sept. 30, 2011.
  • The following 12 counties have been declared disaster areas because they are contigous: Alleghany, Giles, Montgomery, Rockingham, Botetourt, Greene, Rappahannock, Shenandoah, Clarke, Madison, Roanoke and Warren.
  • The independent city of Winchester has also been declared a disaster area.
• West Virginia. The following counties in West Virginia have also been declared disaster areas because they’re contiguous: Berkeley, Hampshire, Hardy, Monroe, Jefferson and Morgan
• Virginia.  Prince George County has been designated as a primary natural disaster area because of losses caused by Hurricane Irene that occurred from Aug. 27-28, 2011.
  • The following counties and cities in Virginia were also declared as disaster areas because they’re contiguous:
    • Counties: Charles City, Chesterfield, Dinwiddie, Surry and Sussex;
    •  Independent cities: Colonial Heights, Hopewell and Petersburg.

8 dead 72 missing as ‘inland tsunami’ hits Qld

An ‘inland tsunami’ kills at least 8 and leaves 72 missing in Grantham, near Toowoomba, Queensland

The deadly flash flood which triggered a 9m high wall of water surging through Grantham, a town west of the city of Toowoomba in Queensland, has been likened to an instant ‘inland tsunami’ by the local Police chief, Bob Atkinson.

Mayor Peter Taylor who who thought his city was safe, Toowoomba is 700 meters above sea level,  said:

“Torrential rain over a very short period of time came down two major creeks through the middle of the city which are normal quiet drainage ways and people had no warning at all.”

“It was just unprecedented. Some people are saying an inland tsunami, and I think that probably sums it up really.”

Floodwaters Surge Toward Brisbane

Meanwhile, residents in low-lying areas of Brisbane, Australia’s third largest city, have been urged by the authorities to evacuate their homes, as the biggest floods in at least 3 decades approaches.

The immediate areas threatened by the flood include about 9,000 homes and businesses.

‘Darkest hour’

“This has been a night of extraordinary events,” Queensland State Premier Anna Bligh told a news conference.

She called called the flash floods in Toowoomba Queensland’s “darkest hour” since the flood crisis began in December.

“The event that started in Toowoomba can only be described as a complete freak of nature, an extraordinary deluge that almost came out of nowhere,” she said .

“What we have here in Queensland tonight is a very grim and desperate situation.”

The Dead and Missing

As the floodwaters claim their 1oth victim (total of 20 dead since December) Ms Bligh says the number of missing people has been revised up to 78.

“Clearly as we get more information from families who are looking for their loved ones these numbers are going to fluctuate, but we now have 78 people unaccounted for,” she said.

“We have 10 deaths and we have at least 18 people for who we have very grave concerns for their safety.”

Ms Bligh said a disaster zone may be declared over a “significant region” of Queensland.

“We are just looking for an appropriate northern line and everything south of that would be declared [a Mega Disaster Zone,]” she said.

FLOOD WARNING FOR THE FITZROY RIVER BASIN
Issued at 4:00 PM on Saturday the 8th of January 2011 [IDQ20765]
by the Bureau of Meteorology, Brisbane.

Moderate to major flooding continues along the Dawson, Comet, Mackenzie and Fitzroy Rivers.

The Fitzroy River at Rockhampton has remained steady at about 9.15 metres during Saturday following a peak of 9.2 metres on Wednesday. Levels will fall veryslowly from Sunday. Rockhampton river levels are expected to remain above 8.5metres (major) until late next week.

CONNORS/ISAAC RIVER SYSTEM:
Moderate flooding continues to ease on the Isaac River at Yatton.

COMET RIVER:
Major flooding continues to ease along the Comet River into the weekend.

MACKENZIE RIVER:
Minor to major flood levels continue to fall along the Mackenzie River, where the main flood peak is now downstream of Tartrus. Levels will fall graduallybetween the Comet confluence and Tartrus.

DAWSON RIVER:
Minor flooding is easing slowly in the upper Dawson River at Taroom. Renewed rises are occurring downstream in the Glebe area with only minor flood levels expected. Downstream at Theodore, Moura and Baralaba, levels will continue to fall fast this weekend before small renewed rises and minor flooding during nextweek.

FITZROY RIVER:
Major flooding continues in the Fitzroy River at Riverslea. At 2:30pm Saturday the river level at Riverslea was at 26.22 metres and falling. Levels areexpected to continue falling very slowly through the weekend.

At Yaamba, flood levels continue to remain steady at 16.45 metres, following amajor peak of 16.55 metres recorded during Tuesday.

The Fitzroy River at Rockhampton remains steady. At 3:30pm Saturday, the river level at Rockhampton was 9.10 metres. River levels are expected to fall veryslowly from Sunday. Rockhampton river levels are expected to remain above 8.5metres (major) until next Friday.

Predicted River Heights/Flows:

DAWSON RIVER at:

Baralaba: Flood levels will fall but remain above major floodlevel (9 metres) until Monday or Tuesday.

FITZROY RIVER at:

Yaamba: Remain above major flood level for several days.

Rockhampton: Fall extremely slowly during the weekend.Remain above 8.5 metres (major) until late next week.

Next Issue:

Heavy rainfall leading to localised flash flooding and potentially worsening the existing river flood situation
For people in the Southeast Coast and Wide Bay and Burnett districts. — Issued at 10:50 pm on Friday 7 January 2011

Synoptic Situation: At 10pm EST, an upper level low was located offshore fromthe Capricornia district while a low level trough was located near the Wide Baycoast.

Heavy rain and isolated thunderstorms are currently occurring about the southern Wide Bay and Burnett district and are forecast to develop about the Sunshine Coast during Saturday morning, and remaining parts of the Southeast Coast district on Saturday afternoon. Heavy rain may lead to localised flash floodingand/or worsen existing river flooding.

Flood warnings are current for various rivers and streams in these districts;refer to these products [www.bom.gov.au/qld] for further information.

The State Emergency Service advises that people in the affected area should:
· avoid driving, walking or riding through flood waters
· take care on the roads, especially in heavy downpours
· avoid swimming in swollen rivers and creeks

Major flooding continues along the Dawson, Comet, Mackenzie and Fitzroy Rivers.

The Fitzroy River at Rockhampton has remained steady at about 9.2 metres during Wednesday. It is expected to remain about its current level overnight and into Thursday.

Flood levels will remain above the major flood level of 8.5 metres for 1 week after the peak.

Australia’s Disasters Continue to Unfold

PRIORITY: FLOOD WARNING FOR THE FITZROY RIVER BASIN

Issued at 7:14 PM on Tuesday the 4th of January 2011 by the Bureau of Meteorology, Brisbane.

Major flooding continues along the Dawson, Comet, Mackenzie and Fitzroy Rivers.

The Fitzroy River at Rockhampton was 9.2 metres at 3:15pm Tuesday and rising slowly with major flooding.

The Fitzroy River at Rockhampton is expected to peak up to 9.4 metres on Wednesday and remain above the major flood level of 8.5 metres for 1 week after the peak.

CONNORS/ISAAC RIVER SYSTEM:
Moderate flooding will continue to ease on the Isaac River at Yatton.

COMET RIVER:
Major flooding will continue to ease along the Comet River during this week.

MACKENZIE RIVER:
Major flooding is occurring along the Mackenzie River, where the main flood peak is now downstream of Tartrus.

DAWSON RIVER:
Major flooding extends downstream from Taroom between The Glebe area through to Knebworth, including the towns of Theodore, Moura and Baralaba. The main flood peak is currently in the Baralaba area, where flood levels will remain above the major flood level (9 metres) until at least Sunday. Major flood levels at Theodore and Moura are expected to continue to fall during this week.

FITZROY RIVER:
The Fitzroy River at Riverslea continues to fall. At 5:30pm Tuesday the river was at 26.56 metres with major flooding. Levels at Riverslea are expected to continue to fall very slowly during this week.

At Yaamba, flood levels currently remain steady near the peak, where at 6pm Tuesday the river level was 16.55 metres and steady.

The Fitzroy River at Rockhampton was 9.20 metres at 3:15pm Tuesday and rising slowly with major flooding. Rockhampton is expected to peak up to 9.4 metres during Wednesday. This is similar to the 1991 (9.3m) and 1954 (9.4m) flood levels. Rockhampton river levels are expected to remain above 8.5 metres (major) for 1 week after the peak.

Theodore: Major flood levels will fall slowly through this week and remain above major flood level (12 metres) until the weekend.

Moura: Major flood levels will fall slowly through this week.

Yaamba: Remain around the major flood peak of 16.55 metres overnight. River levels to remain high for several days.

Floodwaters are surging into the city of Rockhampton, which is almost entirely isolated.

“We’re really still in the middle of an unfolding disaster.” said QLD premier Anna Bligh, as the forecasters reported that Fitzroy River will crest on Wednesday, possibly Thursday.

At least 1,000 homes have been evacuated, as of posting, just before a 9.1m surge of floodwater swamped most of the central Queensland city of Rockhampton.

The health authorities fear an outbreak of Ross River virus, a debilitating infection, which is all but inevitable after large swarms of mosquitoes plague sewage-infested Rockhampton [as well as other populated areas throughout the flood-stricken Queensland and NSW.]

“Rates of the disease – spread to humans by mosquitoes that have fed on infected kangaroos and wallabies – will at least double, said Stephen Doggett, a senior scientist at Westmead Hospital, and could rise much higher.”

The health authorities are concerned about outbreaks of other types of skin and blood infections, as well as snake and spider bites as the cleanup operations begin, a health official expert said.

“Truly Startling”

Prime Minister Julia Gillard on an aerial tour of the town of Emerald called the disaster area as “truly startling.”

She said it was “a major natural disaster” and recovery would take “a significant amount of time.”

“You see how widespread the floodwaters are and how affected Emerald is, how many houses have been affected,” she declared. “The patches that are not covered by floodwaters are a lot less than the area that is covered by floodwaters, so it’s a very tough time in Emerald.”

Wheat Shortage

The impact of severe flooding in Australia goes beyond the local communities and would probably lead to wheat shortages and an increase in the price of food.
