Severed body parts found in Japanese apartment

Police have arrested a 27-year-old man in Zama, a commuter city just outside Tokyo, after discovering parts of nine bodies in his apartment, according to media reports.

They were reportedly investigating the disappearance of a 23-year-old woman, missing since last week, who was seen walking with the murder suspect on a nearby CCTV footage.

The woman apparently met the murder suspect after writing on a suicide website that she wanted to kill herself, media reported.

The apartment block is located near the U.S. Army’s Camp Zama.

Scandinavian activists blame Google for free access and exposure to pornography

“Generation Google Porno – the young generations’ free access and exposure to pornography is an assault against children and young people. How many more examples we need to realize that pornography has serious harmful effects on children and young people?” —NRK

“Scandinavian activists have linked the growing number of sexual assaults involving children to the young generation’s free access and exposure to pornography. They are calling on their governments to stop the unremitting sexualization of children and adolescents,” a report said.

Human rights activists from the human rights organization Freethem Norway and Freethem Sweden, citing increased abuse rate, also assert that pornography represents a national health risk to children and adolescents.

“Earlier this year, Norway’s National Criminal Investigation Service (Kripos) sounded the alarm over the increasing number of reports featuring children raping other children, NRK reported. Last year alone, a spike of 60 percent above the average was reported, which Freethem partly attributed to teenagers’ unrestricted use of porn materials [on the Internet.]”

Japanese war criminal’s confession of torture and rape released

BEIJING, Aug. 2 (Xinhua)—The confession of Mitsuaki Kimura, a Japanese war criminal, detailing his involvement in the capture and torture of Chinese people during Japan’s war of aggression against China was published Saturday.

The confession is the latest in a series published on the website of China’s State Archives Administration (SAA).

According to his written confession, Kimura served as lieutenant captain of the Japanese Garrison Army in Handan, Hebei in January 1939 and as captain of Boli County Military Police Branch of the “Manchukuo” from 1944 to 1945.

In 1942, he led and instructed Gubeikou Military Police to arrest and interrogate about 30 soldiers of the Eighth Route Army in Shixia Township and arrested another 150 in April.

More than 150 soldiers were captured in 1943, with seven of them tortured to death during the interrogation.

Kimura said he accused a Chinese businessman in Jining County of being an agent of the Soviet Union, arrested his daughter aged about 20 for interrogation and forced her to become his servant in 1945.

“In July, when my wife was not at home I was sexually stimulated on seeing her. I raped her,” he said in the confession.

This is the 31st of 45 Japanese war criminal confessions the SAA plans to publish. It has been issuing one a day since July 3.

The move follows denials of war crimes by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Japanese right-wing politicians.

Rape epidemic worsening globally

Posted by feww on December 11, 2011

Millions of people worldwide raped each year

Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, Sweden and the United States are among top 10 countries with the highest reported cases of rape.

Disaster Calendar 2011 – December 11

[December 11, 2011]  Mass die-offs resulting from human impact and the planetary response to the anthropogenic assault could occur by early 2016.  SYMBOLIC COUNTDOWN: 1,557 Days Left to the ‘Worst Day’ in Human History

  • South Africa has the highest rates of rape in the world. Interpol estimates that more than a million rapes are committed annually in South Africa.
    • An estimated 200,000 children, some under the age of one year,  are raped in SA each year.
  • United States. “Officials estimate that, in reality, as many as 2 million women are raped each year, with the majority of them not reporting this violent crime because of the stigma that society still imposes on the victim.”
    • 1 out of every 6 American women has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime (14.8% completed rape; 2.8% attempted rape).
    • 15% of sexual assault and rape victims are under age 12.
    • “Most statutes currently define rape as nonconsensual oral, anal, or vaginal penetration of the victim by body parts or objects using force, threats of bodily harm, or by taking advantage of a victim who is incapacitated or otherwise incapable of giving consent.”
    • About 27.5% of college women in the United States “reported experiences that met the legal criteria for rape.”
      • Some 44% of rape victims are under age 18.
      • 80% are under age 30.
    • At least 84 % of sexual assaults are not reported to the police.
    • About 3% of American men — or 1 in 33 — have experienced an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime.
      • In 2003, 1 in every ten rape victims were male.2
      • 2.78 million men in the U.S. have been victims of sexual assault or rape.
    • “Estimates of the proportion of rapes reported to authorities vary — from less than 3 per cent in South Africa to about 16 per cent in the United States.”
    • “Rape victims are especially at risk of infection. Up to 30 per cent of women raped in the United States every year, for instance, develop an STD as a result.”
  • Global. “Around the world, at least one in every three women has been beaten, coerced into sex, or abused in some other way — most often by someone she knows, including by her husband or another male family member; one woman in four has been abused during pregnancy.”
    • “At least 60 million girls who would otherwise be expected to be alive are “missing” from various populations, mostly in Asia, as a result of sex-selective abortions, infanticide or neglect.”
    • “Molestation of young girls is another profoundly disturbing aspect of this problem. A study in Zaria, Nigeria, for example, found that 16 per cent of hospital patients with sexually transmitted infections were under age 5.At the Genito-Urinary Centre in Harare, Zimbabwe, doctors discovered that more than 900 children under age 12 had been treated for an STD in 1990 alone.”
    • Globally, 1 in 5 women and 1 in 10-20 men report being sexually abused as children. WHO Child maltreatment Fact sheet N°150 August 2010.

Haiti Quake Aftermath: Rape of Displaced People

Posted by feww on March 9, 2010

HAITI: Women at risk in the camps

PORT-AU-PRINCE, 9 March 2010 (IRIN) – Many women at the Jean-Marie Vincent site for displaced people (IDPs) in Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince wash themselves inside their makeshift tents because the only alternative is to do so out in the open. Given the overcrowding and meagre security, this exposes them to the risk of attack or rape.

Going to the site’s latrines is also risky, especially at night, for there is no lighting and some toilets are isolated.

“We have not yet reached a standard of organization that respects women’s rights,” Smith Maximé of the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) in Haiti told IRIN.

“We have registered rape cases that occurred when women were in the latrines. When toilets are not secured – as in many of the camps – women are often attacked there,” he added.

“We are not safe here,” one woman in the Jean-Marie Vincent camp told IRIN, holding her two-month-old baby. “Three men attacked me as I walked to a latrine. They covered my face and my mouth and raped me.” Initially she said nothing but her pain was so intense, after three days she told some relatives.

The failure to meet established minimum disaster relief standards [http://www.sphereproject.org/content/view/44/83/lang,english/] is “creating serious security, privacy and dignity concerns”, according to the Gender in Humanitarian Response Working Group*.

“Increased lighting surrounding those latrines should be an immediate priority to ensure the safety of women and girls using sanitation facilities at night,” the Group said in a statement issued in late February.

“Increased attention must be paid to the provision of dedicated and private bathing facilities to reduce women’s current vulnerability to sexual violence. Though many women and girls bathed outdoors prior to the earthquake, the nature of many IDP sites (crowded living conditions, living near strangers) is creating new vulnerabilities to violence and exploitation, in particular at night, that did not necessarily exist before,” it said.

Crowded and dark

Overcrowding and lack of lighting in camps are part of the problem. In many camps there is no space between tents. Aid organizations and the government plan to move people from 21 of the most congested sites either back home, to host families or to land recently allotted by the authorities. In the meantime aid agencies are putting some security measures in place, such as installing lights.

“Protection is one of the major issues of concern when sites are over-congested,” Sara Ribeiro, protection coordinator with the International Organization for Migration, told IRIN. IOM is the lead agency for the group of agencies collectively tasked with organizing the management of camps for displaced people.

The Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC), [http://www.humanitarianinfo.org/iasc/pageloader.aspx] a group of UN and non-UN organizations that since 1992 has worked to harmonize humanitarian best practice, stipulates [http://oneresponse.info/crosscutting/gender/Documents/Gender%20ABC%20Haiti%20emergenc%2020100121.pdf] that humanitarian actors must ensure that the route to water and sanitation facilities is safe and that latrines are well lit and lockable from the inside.

Management

Ribeiro said another major problem was a lack of camp management agencies. As of 4 March just one-fifth of the 400 camps for displaced families had such agencies in place, she said.

“More agencies. need to take over site management,” she told IRIN. “That is the only way to prevent these things from happening. Because no amount of service delivery [medical care, food rations, water] is going to be able to respond to what happens when the sun sets.”

Community watch groups are forming in many sites; OCHA states in a 4 March report that these groups will need training to increase the protection of women and girls.

UNFPA is working with the authorities and local NGOs to revive a system of reporting sexual violence cases. “But our immediate focus is to disseminate information on available medical and psycho-social support, and to [put first] the rights and choices of the survivor,” Lina Abirafeh, GBV coordinator for UNFPA in Haiti, told IRIN.

The agency is compiling a list of hospitals and NGOs that provide medical and counselling services for distribution in the camps.

UN aid workers say no comprehensive statistics of rape in the camps are available but rape and impunity have long been widespread in Haiti, as IASC notes. In 2008 Amnesty International reported “shocking levels” of sexual violence against girls. [http://www.amnestyusa.org/document.php?id=ENGUSA20081201001]

* The group comprises representatives of MINUSTAH-Human Rights, MINUSTAH-Gender Unit, UNIFEM, UNFPA, World Food Programme, IOM, UN Children’s Fund, and several NGOs, including the International Rescue Committee, American Refugee Committee, and International Medical Corps.

Wal-Mart, the Panther Chameleon and Josef Fritzl

Posted by feww on May 21, 2008

Could Wal-Mart Ever Be Called “Green?”

What are the necessary conditions for pigs to fly?

One headline read: Green tech innovations save cash and planet. The text followed: “Businesses from Wal-Mart Stores Inc to Nike Inc are finding that green investments in their operations are more than just Earth-friendly – they’re boosting the bottom line, an environmental group said on Tuesday.

“The new wave of environmental investments goes beyond energy-saving lighting, buying recycled office supplies and double-side printing, the group, Environmental Defense Fund, said in a new report.” Wow!

Could Wal-Mart Ever Be Called “Green?”

Despite the obvious fallacies and the glaring oxymoron, FEWW moderators decided to put this to the test. The first reactions from an informal sounding were all too similar. The responses varied citing anything from “deception” by one kind of animal, to “rape” by another kind. Two examples follow:

Deception

  • Well, it all depends on your notion of “green,” “blue” [the new advertising gimmick meaning “deep green,”] or khaki camouflage. What color is a Chamaeleo pardalis?

Panther Chameleon. Coloration varies with location, [and business objectives] the different color patterns of Panther Chameleons are commonly referred to as ‘locales’, which are named after the geographical location in which they are found. (Photo Credit: David Parks, via howstuffworks.)

And …

Rape

  • If you can call Josef Fritzl a “caring” father, then you could probably call Wal-Mart “green,” or “blue” [meaning “deep green,”] because W-M’s passion for the environment is similar to Fritzl’s love for his daughter. They both got raped for quarter of a century!

An Austrian police handout picture released April 28, 2008 shows Josef Fritzl.

[Note: A “caring” father, Josef F. locked up his daughter in a windowless cell for 25 years for “her own protection” preventing her from “breaking all the rules” that might have harmed her. He repeatedly raped her to presumably express his “fatherly love,” and even kept three of the seven children which he fathered (grand-fathered?) with her, locked up in the basement to keep the “family unit” intact.]

Contorted logic?

The 7 Rs for Wal-Mart

FEWW team had designed a survey covering a number of “serious” issues and at the last moment they decided to also include the question of Wal-Mart “color” on a poll of the members, colleagues, associates and supporters. The question concerning the mega corporation asked:

What are the circumstances, ever so remotely, under which Wal-Mart could conceivably claim to be “green,” or “blue,” [meaning “deep green?”]

The replies, with all the “polite profanities” and snide remarks removed, were formulated as follows:

To be called “green” without a guffaw [not even a snicker] Wal-Mart should:

1. Renounce profit-making as a business model.
2. Re-establish as a customer co-operative.
3. Re-house all of their employees within a 0.6-mile (1km) radius of the stores.
4. Refuse to serve customers who
(i) Live farther than 5 miles (8km) from their stores, or
(ii) Drive to the stores.

5. Return the parking lots to nature.

6. Refrain from selling merchandise that are NOT locally produced, i.e., stop importing from China.

Or

7. Rot in the Ruins!

Would You Like to Be Spied on, Poisoned, Mugged, Raped, Murdered, or ‘Accidentally’ Killed?

Travel Warning

Posted by feww on April 15, 2008

Muggings are on the rise. Avoid Traveling to New Zealand.

After the latest incident in which eight English and dutch tourists, including two women, were attacked by a large gang of knife-wielding Caucasian New Zealanders, and other incidents of robbery targeting foreign visitors (see references below), a trend seems to be emerging.

The attackers, 6 men in their late 20s or early 30s, shouted, “they have the wrong accent!” as they proceeded to stab six of the tourists, in what seems to be a mugging incident.

If you are traveling to New Zealand

  • Don’t drive on the deadly roads.

  • Don’t walk alone. Make sure you visit places in groups of 20 to 30 people.

  • When attacked by muggers, hand over your money without any resistance, or you could get stabbed.
