Excessive Heat Warning issued for parts of 3 states

National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an Excessive Heat Warning for Southern Nevada, Southeastern California and Northwestern Arizona. 

NWS has warned that high temperatures will remain at potentially dangerous levels
through Sunday.

Very hot weather is expected across the region through the weekend. An Excessive Heat Warning is in effect through Sunday evening for elevations below 4000 feet in the Mojave Desert.

Three major wildfires burning in N.M.

The largest of the three fires is the Thompson Ridge Fire which broke out in the Jemez Mountains just over a week ago.

Thompson Ridge Fire

• Location: Valles Caldera National Preserve
• Started: May 31, 2013
• Personnel: 1,015
• Cause: Downed power line
• Size: 14,430 acres
• Containment: 10 percent, as of Friday 8:30 a.m.
• Fuels: Mixed conifer and Ponderosa pine

Evacuations:  An evacuation order remains in effect for Thompson Ridge, Rancho de la Cueva and Elk Valley.

Tres Lagunas Fire

• Location: 10 miles north of Pecos
• Started: May 30
• Personnel: 1,011
• Cause: Downed power line
• Size: 10,048 acres
• Containment: 34 percent, as of Friday 8:00 a.m.
• Fuels: Timber

Evacuations: Some evacuation orders remain in effect; residents north of Windy Bridge are still evacuated.

Red Flag Warnings are in effect for parts of N. Calif., W. Colorado,  N. Central and Western New Mexico.

Lubbock, Texas Declares a State of Emergency

City and County of Lubbock have declared a state of emergency due the damage caused by severe thunderstorms Wednesday.

“The storm’s 80-plus mph winds caused severe damage to infrastructure throughout the entire service territory, which led to more than 19,000 reported outages at its peak,” said a report citing LP&L.

Drought, Extreme Weather Events Cause Agricultural Disaster in Colorado

USDA has designated the state of Colorado as agricultural disaster area due to damage and losses caused by drought, excessive heat and high winds that began January 1 and continues.

• All but two of Colorado’s 64 counties have been declared primary natural disaster areas, with the remaining counties, Delta and San Juan, being designated continuous disaster areas.

• Florida. The Disaster President has declared a major disaster exists in the state of Florida following the damage caused by Tropical Storm DEBBY.

Kansai Electric Power Co restarted the 1,180-megawatt No. 3 unit at its Ohi nuclear plant on Sunday.

The No.4 reactor unit will resume operations in two weeks time, reports said.

Several thousand protesters  marched through Tokyo streets calling for an end to the use of nuclear power, NHK reported. [Japan has a population of about 128 million.]

Australian Floods: Crocodiles Swam in the Streets

Crocodiles have been sighted swimming in floodwaters in Australia’s north Queensland, which were partially submerged as a result of massive floods caused by torrential rains, and where more than 70 percent of the state has been declared a disaster area.

At least three sightings of crocodiles were reported in the in the town of Nomanton, “where children have been warned not to play in the floodwaters.”  A report said.

Forecasters predicted another cyclone and heavy rain for the rest of the week for the disaster-stricken north Queensland.

‘Dying’ Continent: Caught Between Hell and High Water

This map of Australia shows how the land surface temperature from January 25 to February 1 compared to the average mid-summer temperatures the continent experienced between 2000-2008. Places where temperatures were warmer than average are red, places experiencing near-normal temperatures are white, and places where temperatures were cooler than average are blue. The data were collected by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite. While southern Australia was scorching, a similarly large area of northern and central Australia was several degrees cooler than it was in the previous nine years. The cool anomaly across that region is probably linked to the above-average rainfall the area has received during this year’s wet season.

The Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) called this heat wave “exceptional,” not only for the high temperatures but for their duration. One-day records were broken in multiple cities, with temperatures in the mid-40s. In Kyancutta, South Australia, the temperature reached 48.2 degrees Celsius (118.8 degrees Fahrenheit). Many places also set records for the number of consecutive days with record-breaking heat.

“On the morning of 29 January, an exceptional event also occurred in the northern suburbs of Adelaide around 3 a.m., when strong north-westerly winds mixed hot air aloft to the surface. At RAAF Edinburgh [a regional airport], the temperature rose to 41.7°C at 3:04 a.m. Such an event appears to be without known precedent in southern Australia.” Bom said.
