Record Texas electricity demand, amid record-breaking, lingering heat
Scorching temperatures across Texas, exceeding record-breaking 42.2℃ (108℉) in Dallas/Fort Worth area, have pushed the demand for power in Texas, setting peak records for the month on July 16 and 17, and breaking the grid’s all-time high on July 18 and 19.
The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), which operates 90% of the state’s power grid (it has about 24 million customers), forecast demand would exceed 74,647 megawatts on Monday.
Demand peak hit 73,259 megawatts between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Thursday (July 19), breaking the previous hourly record of 72,691 megawatts set on the same day. The previous record of 71,438 megawatts only lasted for one day, having been set between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Wednesday, ERCOT spokesperson said.

Perth records 40 plus degree temperatures three consecutive days
Western Australia’s capital city, Perth [pop:~ 2.1 million,] has recorded 40 plus degree (C) temperatures for three consecutive days, breaking a 50-year record for February, said a report.
The latest record-breaking heatwave was reportedly the seventh ever occurring in the region.
If the temperature reaches 40ºC or higher on Wednesday, it will be the first time there has been four consecutive 40ºC days since 1933, said Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) spokesman.
“Perth’s longest run of 40 degree days or more consecutively is four, and that was recorded back in 1933, if we get five we’ve broken that record and we’ve moved into uncharted territory basically.”
At sunrise today (Feb. 9), the temperature was 20ºC, reaching 32 within 2 hours, and 40ºC by 11:00am. It peaked at a sweltering 41.2ºC in the metro area, said the report.
“Pearce airbase was the hottest place in wider Perth at 44.3C and Mardie in the Pilbara was the state’s hotspot, reaching 45.6C.”
On Monday, the temperature reached 47ºCin Shark Bay Airport, situated in the Gascoyne region, northwest of Western Australia.

June 2015 2nd warmest in contiguous U.S., West saw record warmth, drought worsened in Northwest: NOAA
The June average temperature for the Lower 48 was 22°C (71.4°F), or 1.6°C (2.9°F) above the 20th century average, second only to June 1933 (71.6°F) in the 121-year period of record, reported The National Climatic Data Center .
Above-average temperatures recorded across the West and along the Southeast coast, where 16 states were much warmer than average.
- California, Idaho, Oregon, Utah, and Washington recorded their warmest June.
- Multiple western cities set new June temperature records during an intense heatwave the second half of the month.
- Boise, Idaho saw the temperature soaring to 43.3C (110°F).

The Alaska statewide average temperature for June was the sixth warmest in 91-years of record keeping at 52.4°F, 3.1°F above average. Homer, Alaska had its warmest June on record. Prolonged warmth and dryness and lack of June snow created ideal wildfire conditions with dozens of large wildfires impacting central and southern areas of the state during June.
“The U.S. Climate Extremes Index (USCEI) for the year-to-date was 45 percent above average and the 13th highest value on record. On the national-scale, extremes in warm maximum and minimum temperatures and days with precipitation were much above average,” said NCDC.
- More than 400 wildfires consumed 1.8 million acres (728,000 hectares), breaking the previous June record of 1.1 million acres (445,000 hectares) charred by 216 fires, said the report.
- Texas had its wettest year-to-date on record with 61.1mm (24.04 inches), 27.2mm (10.70 inches) above average.
- Previous record wet January-June record in 1941: 55.2mm (21.72 inches)
- January-June precipitation total for 2011: Just 14.5mm (5.71 inches), the lowest amount on 121-year record.
- California: Drought conditions remain dire across California, with 46.7 percent of the state experiencing the worst category of drought (D4, exceptional).

SSTs around Australia were unusually warm at 0.49°C above average
Australia recorded its third-warmest calendar year in 104 years, since national records began in 1910, said the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM).
“Today’s release of the Bureau of Meteorology Annual Climate Statement 2014 confirms Australia has recorded its third-warmest calendar year since national records began in 1910.”
Mean temperatures were 0.91C above the long-term average last year, said BOM.
“This follows the warmest year on record in 2013, which was 1.20°C warmer than average.”
The news comes amid South Australia’s worst bushfires in thirty years, as a major wildfire Adelaide Hills continues to burn uncontrollably, with soaring temperatures and strong winds forecast to fuel it further.
The monster blaze has already consumed at least 38 homes, 125 outbuildings and four businesses, the South Australian authorities have confirmed.
BOM Report: Selected Highlights
- Spring 2014 was the warmest on record in Australia.
- A number of major bushfires occurred during January and February, with particularly destructive fires in Victoria and South Australia.
- Six significant heatwaves and warm spells occurred, including one of southeast Australia’s most prolonged heatwaves in mid-January.
- Prolonged rainfall deficiencies continued for inland and southeastern Queensland and northeastern New South Wales.
- Sea surface temperatures (SSTs) around Australia were unusually warm; 0.49°C above average for the year to November.
- Australian temperatures have warmed approximately one degree Celsius since 1950, and the continued warmth in 2014 adds to this long-term warming trend.

Massive forest fire sweeping central Sweden, spreading north
A deadly forest-fire, said to be largest forest fires in Sweden in modern times, has consumed more than 15,000 hectares and continues to spread uncontrollably.
The fire has forced at least 1,000 Swedes out of their homes, and put the entire 4,500 population of the town Norberg on standby for evacuation, said a report.
The fire has claimed at least one life so far. The body of a 30-year-old man, who had died from burns, was found on a road north of Stabäck, Västmanland on Tuesday, said the report.
The fire is now spreading north, and the authorities say it could burn for weeks, even months.
“The fire risks heading north to the lower reaches of Norberg,” Fredrik Eriksson of the emergency services told reporters.
“I’ve never experienced anything like this. Evacuation? That’s what happens in wartime,” said a Norberg resident.
“Forest fires are a risk we tend to associate primarily with southern Europe, but we are seeing that no country is immune,” said Sweden’s EU Commissioner, as she thanked Italy and France for providing support.
Record Lightning Strikes
Some 47,901 lightning strikes were recorded in Sweden Sunday night beating a previous record of 45,000 strikes set earlier this year, said the report.
Record Heat
The mercury rose to at 34°C in the town of Härsnäs in Östergötland on Sunday, setting a new record for August. The town of Visby in Gotland set a new temperature record for the warmest August day at 32.9°C.

Record heatwave kills dozens, possibly hundreds in India
Seven consecutive days of extreme temperatures in Delhi, world’s second most populous urban agglomeration with a population of about 25 million, has pushed up the ground ozone levels by more than 3 folds.
Temperatures have been hovering above 45 Celsius (113 Fahrenheit) since last week, amid night-long outages.
“Residents staged sit-in protests outside electricity substations in the state of Uttar Pradesh late on Wednesday, days after protesters had set substations on fire and taken power officials hostage after weeks of daily blackouts,” reported Reuters.
“God alone can provide any relief from the prevailing power crisis,” said the director of Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation,. adding that power would only return after the monsoon arrived and demand fell.
Much of Delhi has been experiencing long blackouts after a surge in demand and damage from a thunderstorm overwhelmed the grid, said the report.
More Extreme Events
“We are witnessing more serious and more extreme events,” said spokesperson for India’s Center for Science and Environment (CSE).
Dozens of unidentified bodies have been discovered in Delhi since Monday.

Extreme conditions continue as searing heat wave moves across Australia
Temperature records shattered again in central, western and north-west Queensland, with 40+ degrees (Celsius) recorded in multiple locations on Thursday.
“It is unusually hot. It’s at least 15 degrees above the average up there at the moment and those are pretty unusual temperatures,” said a weatherman at the Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BOM).
“Century Mine in the far north-west of the state got up to 44.6 today, Camooweal 45.5, a new January record, the Monument Airport 45.9, another January record,” said a senior weatherman at BOM.
“Bedourie police station [recorded] 47.3 [degrees Celsius], which is an annual extreme for them, and Birdsville got up to 48.6 [degrees Celsius.]”
“Our temperatures have been near record, the highest temperature we had was at Moomba at 49.3 degrees but a lot of centres up there are pushing up around that 50 mark,” said another official at BOM.
“It is unusually hot. It’s at least 15 degrees above the average up there at the moment and those are pretty unusual temperatures.”
In the Northern Territory, top temperatures at Alice Springs have remained above 43ºC since the New Year, several record broken already.
Meantime, highest-ever temperature of 45.4ºC was recorded at Tennant Creek airport on Thursday, breaking the previous record set on January 25, 2013 by 1.2ºC, said a report.
Australia’s Drought Spells Absolute Disaster
The heat wave has brought more misery for drought-hit cattle farmers who have been slaughtering livestock as Australia sweltered through the hottest year on record in 2013, said a report.
“Water supplies are fast diminishing and whatever feed supplies that were left are cooking off to the point where there won’t be any left,” said Charles Burke, chief executive of Agforce, a Queensland cattle industry group.
“This drought is shaping to be an absolute disaster.”
Australia is the third largest beef exporter in the world after India and Brazil, followed by the US, NZ, EU-27, Uruguay, Argentina, Mexico and Belarus (Source: USDA).
Hottest Year Since Records Began in 1910
Australia experienced its hottest year in 2013 since records began more than a 100 years ago, said BOM on Friday. The continent recorded average temperatures of 1.2ºC above the long-term average of 21.8 degree Celsius, shattering the previous record set in 2005.
The authorities have issued multiple health warnings on Friday for several major cities as fire crews continued to control bushfires across the continent.
Australian PM May Live to Regret…
Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott abolished the country’s Climate Change Commission in September, denying that climate change was responsible for bushfires across New South Wales state in October.
Ex-tropical cyclone Christine
South Australia’s far north also experienced near-record temperatures on Thursday, as ex-tropical cyclone Christine moved across the state.
