– Arabia Report # 32 –
Saudi Govt Forcibly Evicting Residents of Awamia Town, Al-Qatif Region
Background:
Al-Awamiyah, also Awamia, is an ancient town [population of about 35,000] overlooking the Persian Gulf, in the northern end of the oasis of Al-Qatif, Saudi Arabia.
The town has been put under siege by the Saudi govt mercenary forces since May 2017. Residents are not allowed to enter or leave, as the government mercenaries indiscriminately shell the neighborhoods with artillery fire and snipers shooting residents. Dozens of Shia civilians, including several children, one a 2 year-old child, have been killed. The Saudi government claims it is fighting terrorists (!)
“On Friday, 28 July, the Saudi authorities announced that the remaining residents of the town of Awamiyah, estimated to be around 35,000, must leave the town within four hours. Intermediaries relayed the authorities’ directives and informed local residents that they should leave the town through two specific exits and carry white flags as they do so,” a report said.
“In the past two days, a massive military build-up has been reported at the outskirts of the town as the military forces stationed inside the town escalated their use of excessive force against the town’s residents. Previously, the authorities had ordered the Taraji sports club to evacuate the Amir Nayef Sport City stadium, located on the outskirts of al-Qatif, which they since have used to station newly brought-in military equipment and personnel, reported to be that of the Saudi Arabian National Guard.”
