South Dakota Severe Storms, Tornadoes, Straight-line Winds, and Flooding (DR-4233)

The Disaster President has declared a major disaster exists in the State of South Dakota in the areas affected by severe storms, tornadoes, straight-line winds, and flooding during the period of June 17-24, 2015.

The areas that were worst affected by the extreme weather events include the counties of Brule, Buffalo, Fall River, Haakon, Hughes, Jackson, Jerauld, Jones, Lyman, McCook, Oglala Lakota, and Stanley counties, and the Crow Creek Sioux Tribe, Lower Brule Sioux Tribe, and the Oglala Sioux Tribe within Oglala Lakota County.

Federal Coordinating Officer for federal recovery operations in the affected area said additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the territory and warranted by the results of further damage assessments.

This is the 29th Major Disaster Declaration [DR 4205-4233] proclaimed for a U.S. state/territory, and the second for Vermont so far this year. Additionally, the federal government has issued eight Fire Management Assistance Declarations for the year to date, as of posting.

Nebraska Severe Storms, Tornadoes, Straight-line Winds, and Flooding (DR-4183)

Federal Disaster has been declared for the state of Nebraska due to severe storms, tornadoes, straight-line winds and flooding during the during the period of June 14-21, 2014.

Worst of the damage and losses have occurred in Cedar, Cuming, Dakota, Dixon, Franklin, Furnas, Harlan, Kearney, Phelps, Stanton, Thurston, and Wayne counties.

Additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the state and warranted by the results of further damage assessments, said Fema in a statement released by White House.

Iowa Severe Storms, Tornadoes, Straight-line Winds, and Flooding (DR-4184)

Federal Disaster has been declared for the state of Iowa due to severe storms, tornadoes, straight-line winds and flooding during the during the period of June 14-23, 2014.

Worst of the damage and losses caused by the extreme weather events have occurred in Allamakee, Buchanan, Buena Vista, Butler, Cherokee, Chickasaw, Clay, Dickinson, Emmet, Fayette, Franklin, Hancock, Humboldt, Ida, Kossuth, Lyon, Osceola, Palo Alto, Plymouth, Pocahontas, Sac, Sioux, Winnebago, Winneshiek, Woodbury, and Wright counties.

Additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the state and warranted by the results of further damage assessments, said officials.

A second Federal Disaster has been declared for the state of Iowa due to severe storms, tornadoes, straight-line winds and flooding during the during the period of June 1-4, 2014.

Areas worst affected by the disasters are Burt, Butler, Cass, Hamilton, Holt, Nemaha, Pawnee, Polk, Rock, Thurston, Valley, and Washington counties.

Additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the state and warranted by the results of further damage assessments, said officials.

South Dakota Severe Storms, Tornadoes, and Flooding (DR-4186)

Federal Disaster has been declared for the state of South Dakota due to severe storms, tornadoes and flooding during the period of June 13-20, 2014.

Areas worst affected by the disasters are Butte, Clay, Corson, Dewey, Hanson, Jerauld, Lincoln, Minnehaha, Perkins, Turner, Union, and Ziebach Counties and the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe within Corson County.

Additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the state and warranted by the results of further damage assessments, said officials.

State of Emergency declared in three Wisconsin counties

Gov. Walker has declared a state of emergency for three Wisconsin counties after six tornadoes touchdown in Dane, Green and Grant Counties.

The tornadoes ranged from F-1 to F-3, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). Damaging winds and hail were also reported in the affected areas.

SD Declares a State of Emergency

Gov. Daugaard has declared a State of Emergency following severe flooding affecting southeastern South Dakota.

Canada

Ontario: The town Angus is currently under a state of emergency after a tornado touched down Tuesday night, tearing up fences and shearing off the tops of homes, said a report.

Alberta: Nine communities remain under states of emergency amid floods that have affected thousands of people. The communities that had declared states of emergency include Claresholm, Coalhurst, Cardston, Coaldale, the Blood Indian Reserve, Medicine Hat, the Municipality of Crowsnest Pass, the Municipal District of Willow Creek and Lethbridge County, according to the provincial officials.

Major Disaster Declared for South Dakota

The White House Declares  South Dakota  Federal Disaster Area

South Dakota has been declared a Major Disaster Area due to a severe winter storm, snowstorm, and flooding during the period of October 3-16, 2013.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has announced that federal disaster aid has been made available to the State of South Dakota in the areas affected by a severe winter storm, snowstorm, and flooding during the period of October 3-16, 2013.

“Federal funding is available for Disaster Unemployment Assistance for affected individuals in Butte, Corson, Custer, Dewey, Fall River, Haakon, Harding, Jackson, Lawrence, Meade, Pennington, Perkins, Shannon, and Ziebach counties and the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe of the Cheyenne River Reservation within Dewey and Ziebach counties and the Oglala Sioux Tribe within Jackson and Shannon counties,” according to FEMA website.

“The President’s action makes federal funding available to state, tribal and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by the severe winter storm, snowstorm, and flooding in Butte, Corson, Custer, Dewey, Fall River, Haakon, Harding, Jackson, Lawrence, Meade, Pennington, Perkins, Shannon, and Ziebach counties and the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe of the Cheyenne River Reservation within Dewey and Ziebach counties and the Oglala Sioux Tribe within Jackson and Shannon counties.”

Additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the state and warranted by the results of further damage assessments, said Gary R. Stanley who has been named as the Federal Coordinating Officer for federal recovery operations in the affected area.

Blizzard Kills 80,000 Cattle in S. Dakota

6,000 SD ranches lose 80,000 cattle to early-autumn blizzard

Some 6,000 ranching operations have suffered catastrophic losses from a statewide snowstorm in South Dakota, the country’s 6th largest state in livestock production, with nearly 4 million head of cattle.

Many parts of South Dakota reported record snowfall totals for the entire month of October over the weekend.

The massive snowstorm took ranchers by surprise hitting just days after 80-degree weather, and before they had a chance to move their herds from less-protected summer grazing lands, said a report.

“Thousands of head had been recently relocated here from Texas and New Mexico to escape punishing droughts in those states.”

Up to  20 percent of all cattle were killed in some parts of the state, said Silvia Christen, executive director of the South Dakota Stockgrowers Association.

“Some ranchers lost all their cattle. They’ve yet to find one alive… They’re facing absolute destruction,” she said.

Many ranchers worry that with the federal government shutdown, they’ll receive no compensation for their catastrophic losses.

“A lot of the government agencies that we would normally be turning to for those answers are furloughed. So there’s this sort of timing issue that’s enhancing the frustration out there in cattle country.” Jodie Anderson, executive director of the South Dakota Cattlemen’s Association said.

Die-off Double Whammy

“The most immediate concern is proper disposal of the dead livestock, which state law says must be burned, buried or rendered within 36 hours — for the health not only of surviving herds but also for people,” said a report.

“That can be a significant source of disease spread, so we want to make sure those carcasses are burned, buried or rendered as quickly as possible,” South Dakota’s state veterinarian, told reporters.

In addition to tens of thousands of calves being killed, thousands more cows that would have delivered calves next year also died in the blizzard, said South Dakota Cattlemen’s Association, warning that the effects of catastrophe would be felt for many years to come.

“And the stress of the storm will leave its mark on surviving herds, the South Dakota State University Agricultural Extension Service said, leaving the remaining cattle vulnerable to ruinous diseases with names like infectious bovine rhinotracheitis, bovine respiratory syncytial virus and bovine viral diarrhea virus.” The report said.

Major Disaster Declared in Texas, S. Dakota

WH Signs Texas Disaster Declaration

The White House has declared a major disaster exists in the State of Texas  in the area affected by an explosion during the period of April 17-20, 2013.

A deadly blast rocked the West Fertilizer Plant in the small town of West north of Waco, Texas at about 7.50pm local time  on Wednesday, April 17.

The blast was recorded as a 2.1 magnitude quake by USGS/EHP, which said, “the magnitude measures only the ground motion, not the air wave, so is substantially less than the true size of the event.”

“The West plant is one of thousands of sites across rural America that store and sell hazardous materials such as chemicals and fertilizer for agricultural use, many within close range of residences and schools,” said a report.
