U.S. Tornado Alley Swept by Twisters

At least 36 tornadoes have swept through Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska, flipping cars, downing power lines and snapping trees.

The twisters, including a “large tornado,” have caused “substantial” damage to many structures across several regions.

Powerful Tornado Destroys or Damages 80 Percent of Orrick, MO

A powerful twister has destroyed up to 300 homes and other buildings in the small Missouri town  of Orrick (Population: ~850).

“The Missouri Highway Patrol estimated up to 80 percent of the city had been affected by the tornado.  A perimeter has been setup around the town.  Police said only residents will be allowed in the area for the next 48 hours,” said a report.

The twister ripped roofs on homes and flattened buildings, uprooted trees and downed power lines, flipping over cars and other vehicles.

“It looks like someone bombed the hell out of us,” said a resident.

Up to 9 Tornadoes Touch Down in North Carolina and Illinois

Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has received at least 9 reports of tornadoes in North Carolina and Illinois.

Reports also include 3-inch hail in Lawrence, Kentucky, golf-ball size hail in Wilson County, NC, and 60MPH winds in Wayne county, Ohio.

There are also hundreds of reports of damage to buildings, with numerous trees uprooted  across MI, NC, MS, OH, KY, AL, GA, CO and FL.

Gov. Deal Declares a State of Emergency for Georgia

Gov. Deal declared a state of emergency Monday night in anticipation of the storms.

“At this juncture, we’ve declared the emergency for the entire state because it’s impossible to pinpoint where the weather will hit,” said Deal in a statement. “Georgia is threatened at least through (Tuesday) and perhaps into Wednesday. We’re prepared now and we’ll be ready for recovery should we, God forbid, experience tornado damage or flooding.”

Gov. Bryant Declared a State of Emergency for Mississippi

Gov. Bryant declared a state of emergency on Monday in advance of the storms that forecasters had warned could spawn tornadoes, heavy rains, damaging hail and flash floods.

“This storm system has the potential to create dangerous conditions, and we are monitoring it closely,” said Bryant. “Residents should not overreact (!)  but should make plans now to ensure they are prepared for a variety of conditions, including strong winds and rains and the possibility of hail and tornadoes.”

Gov. McCrory Declares State of Emergency for four N.C. Counties

Governor McCrory declared a state of emergency for Beaufort, Chowan, Pasquotank and Perquimans counties following the damage and destruction caused by Friday’s severe thunderstorms and devastating tornadoes. He warned of more severe weather statrting Monday.

“What I witnessed firsthand in Beaufort, Chowan and Perquimans counties is a stark reminder of how damaging tornadoes can be,” said McCrory. “My heart goes out to the hundreds of people dealing with property damage, injuries, and even the loss of life. In times like these, we must stick together and help each other out, and we will do all that we can to help communities hit by these storms.”

Gov. Fallin Declares a State of Emergency for Ottawa County

Oklahoma Gov. Fallin declared a state of emergency for Ottawa County on Monday after a tornado struck the area Sunday night killing at least one person, destroying Quapaw’s fire stations and scores of other buildings, including homes and businesses.

In its latest forecast the National Weather Service said:

Severe weather threat continues from Great Lakes to Gulf Coast and Mid-Atlantic

The NWS Storm Prediction Center is forecasting a risk of severe weather Tuesday afternoon and into [Thursday] from the Great Lakes southward to the central and eastern Gulf Coast and eastward to the Carolinas and Virginia. The greatest risk is from eastern Mississippi to central Alabama, where a Moderate Risk is in place. Several tornadoes, large hail and straight line damaging winds are likely.

Summary:
scattered thunderstorms will continue from the Great Lakes region south-southwestward across the Ohio and Tennessee river valleys to the central Gulf Coast region. Storms will also continue across parts of North and South Carolina and into southern Virginia.
Finally, storms will continue gradually moving off the east coast of Florida. While some severe risk — including potential for hail and locally damaging winds — will continue from Ohio southward into Kentucky over the next couple of hours, the greater risk for severe weather including potential for a couple of tornadoes — will continue into the overnight hours across parts of southern and eastern Tennessee and northwest Georgia, and then south-southwestward across parts of Mississippi and Alabama. a few severe storms may also persist into the overnight hours over the Carolinas/southern Virginia vicinity, including the risk for hail and locally damaging winds and possibly a tornado.

Dozens of Tornadoes Attack Five Southern States, Killing at least 23 People

States of Emergency declared in Alabama, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma and Georgia as up to 52 tornadoes swoop across the southern U.S.,  leaving trails of death and destruction in AL, MS, TN, GA and KY.

At least 23 people were killed in Alabama and Mississippi after tornadoes struck Monday evening. The  total number of fatalities are not yet confirmed.

The tornado attack follows another round deadly strike by twisters Sunday evening, spawned by the same massive storm system, which left more than two dozen people dead in Arkansas, Iowa and Oklahoma.

The extent of damage in Tupelo, Mississippi, was described as “devastating” by the mayor, after a tornado tore through the city, destroying or damaging hundreds of homes and businesses.

“It’s a very serious situation … I am just encouraging everyone to stay inside and be weather aware. There is still a very real danger of another line coming through and people still need to be inside,” said Tupelo Mayor.

Severe Thunderstorms Spawning Deadly Tornadoes Kill at least Two Dozen People in Central U.S.

Gov. Sam Brownback declared a state of disaster emergency for Baxter Springs, Kansas Sunday evening.

At least a dozen fatalities reported in Arkansas, with many more injuries caused by up to 14 confirmed tornadoes.

Tornadoes have also claimed lives in other parts of America’s midsection.

• At least 30 tornadoes (29 confirmed) have swooped across six states, as of posting.

• Tornado reports received by SPC from Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa and Mississippi.

• A twister hit Quapaw, Ottawa County, Okla., about 5:30 p.m. Sunday, killing at least two people and causing damage, according to the sheriff’s office. The extent of damage was unknown, as of posting.

• The tornado destroyed the fire station in Quapaw, and caused heavy damage to north end of the town.

• Arkansas Game and Fish HQ east of Mayflower has been heavily damaged, said SPC.

• A “mass casualty situation” has been reported by the Faulkner County Sheriff’s office, after a half-mile wide tornado touched down in Vilonia, AR.

• A massive tornado touched down west of Little Rock, AR, leaving a 30-mile path of destruction.

• Parts of Pulaski County were devastated with numerous homes completely destroyed, said the sheriff’s office.

• A powerful tornado damaged or destroyed numerous homes and several buildings in downtown Baxter Springs, Kansas. (Also unconfirmed reports of multiple deaths, 25 people injured.)

• Another tornado produced an intermittent damage path to the northeast of Hammond, Kansas, after toppling a grain elevator onto railroad tracks, overturning 6 rail cars.

• A tornado damaged or destroyed several houses in Saltillo, Arkansas.

• Numerous trees were uprooted in White County, AR.

• Town of Ferndale, AR, is one of the worst hit areas,  said the sheriff’s office.

Numerous reports of Damaging Winds and/or Destructive Hail have also been sent to the SPC from the above states as well as Texas, Missouri, Colorado, Illinois, Tennessee and Kentucky.

• Numerous trees and powerlines were down with  quarter size hail reported in Todd County, Kentucky. (The trees are down on cars and houses).

• Heavy damage to farmhouses and barns reported across Missouri.

• Thousands of trees, large and small, uprooted or snapped across Iowa.

• Trees blown onto powerlines and buildings damaged across Carroll, MO.  Quarter sized hail also reported.

• Farm animals reported missing in Lafayette, MO.

• Baseball size hail was smashing windows out of vehicles west of Canton, Van Zandt County, Texas.

• Large hail damaged many vehicles in Wood County, TX.

• “Tonight, I walked around what was only hours earlier a thriving neighborhood that is now gone. An entire neighborhood of 50 or so homes has been destroyed – many homes are completely gone except the foundation,”  U.S. Representative for Arkansas Tim Griffin told Reuters. “And there is more devastation like this in other parts of Arkansas.”

Another round of severe weather and heavy precipitation expected on Monday

The threat for severe weather will last overnight Sunday into Monday morning in the Central and Southern U.S. Another significant outbreak, that could include strong tornadoes, is possible Monday afternoon and night in the Mid-South and Lower Miss. Valley. Severe weather could also impact parts of the Mid/Upper Miss. and Ohio Valleys. Heavy rainfall in the Midwest and South could cause flooding.

Deadly Tornadoes Swoop on Central U.S., Oklahoma and Arkansas Declare Emergencies

A twister hit Quapaw, Ottawa County, Okla., about 5:30 p.m. Sunday, killing at least two people and causing damage, according to the sheriff’s office. The extent of damage was unknown, as of posting.

• The tornado destroyed the fire station in Quapaw, and caused heavy damage to north end of the town.

• Arkansas Game and Fish HQ east of Mayflower has been heavily damaged, said SPC.

• At least 17 confirmed tornado reports in six states were received by the Storm Prediction Center (SPC), as of posting.

The national Weather Service (NWS) has also issued the following forecast.

High Risk of severe weather for Arkansas and adjacent areas

Severe weather will affect large portions of Central and Southern U.S. well into Sunday night. The greatest tornado risk (indicated by the High Risk area issued by the NWS Storm Prediction Center) will be centered on Arkansas, where a few strong and long-track tornadoes will be possible late into the night. Also, heavy rainfall could cause flooding in parts of the Miss. & Tenn. Valleys.

‘It was definitely a tornado’

“It kind of touched down pretty quickly and went back up,” said a Roseville Fire Department spokesman. “Roof tiles went flying off, solar panels were all over the place … and a boat was lifted up and moved about six feet from where it was.”

“It was definitely a tornado [measuring EF0, with win speeds of up to 116 km/h,] ” said the National Weather Service.

The twister left a trail of debris 300 meters (yards) long and 20 meters wide.

More tornadoes than in any other state so far this year

“Three tornadoes have struck the Sacramento Valley so far this week, including one that ripped through the city of Roseville on Wednesday, levitating lawn furniture and barbecues and tearing up fences, windows and roofs. The others hit in Glenn County on Wednesday (60 almond trees uprooted), and Butte County on Tuesday (a few dead trees knocked over), said a report.

Some 127 tornadoes have touched down in California since 1996, according to NWS.

Mississippi Gov. declared a State of Emergency for four counties following ‘significant damage’ caused by severe storms and tornadoes. Those counties are: Forrest, Lamar, Lawrence and Marion.

• The other affected counties were Wayne County, Mississippi, Clarke and Washington counties in Alabama.

• The worst affected areas were the city of Hattiesburg in Marion County and the nearby town of Petal in  Forrest County

What’s a Hydrokong?

Is it a mega-tropical storm system, or an extra-tropical cyclone (ETC), i.e., a non-tropical, large-scale low pressure storm system like a Nor’easter?

“Hydrokong” is a colossal atmospheric phenomenon. It’s an extreme precipitation event which is enhanced by circulation changes that increase and concentrate the distribution of water vapor.

Globally, as total precipitation increases, the duration or frequency of precipitation events decreases. However, warmer temperatures and regional variation can significantly affect those offsetting behaviors. For example, reduced total precipitation in one region, the Western United States, can significantly increase the intensity of precipitation in another region, the Midwest. Hydrokongs essentially create two extreme events, droughts in one region and flooding caused by mega-intense precipitation in another. As the global temperatures rise, more hydrokongs should be expected.

Into the SUV with what little you could snatch away from the mouth of the fire heading east to Iowa to stay with Aunt Molly. On interstate 29 a twister is about to touch down. Whoosh! You swerve out of the way just in time.

Aunt Molly’s house in Cedar Rapids wasn’t so lucky. It didn’t have wheels to drive away and avoid the floodwater; it is completely deluged.

Five hours and a dozen phonecalls later, you are finally heading to the calm of Wisconsin to stay with Cousin Thelma and her family. Turn the radio on. Something tingles deep inside your gut, that uncomfortable feeling something is wrong. And you are right! Well, It’s Friday the 13th, you hear yourself murmuring.

Deadly twister kills 4, injures 48

A deadly twister, one of about 30 that hovered over four U.S. Midwestern states Wednesday, hit the Little Sioux Scout Ranch in western Iowa , where dozens of scouts were gathered for a “Pohuk Pride” training, killing four people and injuring about 40 others.

“We still have a threat of tornadoes, along with large hail and damaging wind gusts,” said a Storm Prediction Center meteorologist.

Deadly storms flood Midwest

At least five people were reported killed as heavy rains continued to pound the American Midwest on Sunday, flooding towns from Iowa to Michigan and threatening levees as lakes and rivers swelled.

Early Death Toll:

• Two delivery workers for The Grand Rapids Press in Michigan were killed Sunday when their car fell into a deep ravine created when a rain-swollen creek washed out a road.

• A woman died in Lansing Michigan, when a small trailer blew over on top of her.

• At least one person died as the result of rising waters, police spokesman in Columbus, Indiana said.

Meanwhile, storms in Nebraska spun out an early-morning Omaha tornado about a quarter-mile wide that moved northeast. As much as 11 inches of rain flooded central Indiana over the weekend.

Most towns south of Indianapolis and further west in Terre Haute received 6-10 inches of rainfall, said a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. He said some affected areas hadn’t seen a such flooding for 100 years.

Flood waters continued to rise throughout Iowa on Sunday, with the northern part of the state receiving up to 5 inches of rain from a single afternoon storm.

Tornadoes maul homes, flip vehicles

A series of tornadoes destroyed homes, toppled power lines and flipped vehicles Saturday as a small but powerful storm system moved through the region, cutting just south of Chicago before weakening and moving over Lake Michigan.

“It was kind of like a train coming through the living room,” An eye witness said. “The building was shaking. There was a lot of commotion.” He said his neighborhood looked like a war zone, with siding, branches and debris strewn everywhere.

Lightning struck a pavilion at a Connecticut state park killing one person and injuring four others. Strong thunderstorms moved through the state Sunday leaving thousands of homes without power.

Powerful storms swamp U.S. Midwest, spawn tornadoes

Heavy rains caused flooding that forced hundreds of evacuations in Indiana, and a tornado raked Chicago’s suburbs on Saturday as violent thunderstorms pummeled the already soggy U.S. heartland, authorities said.

The U.S. Coast Guard was called out to help rescue stranded homeowners and motorists, and near-record flooding was forecast for rivers and creeks in western and central Indiana where Gov. Mitch Daniels declared an emergency in 10 more counties, added to the 41 counties declared earlier. At least one person was injured and some 29,000 households were without power.

“We’ve had some reports of houses destroyed,” said Andrew Krein of the National Weather Service.

Tornadoes also struck in Iowa and Wisconsin, capping a season that has seen a parade of storms spawning tornadoes, hail and destructive winds. According to the weather service, 112 people have died in tornadoes since the beginning of the year, the most in the United States in a decade.

Weather service warns of ‘violent’ tornadoes in Plains

Large hail, strong winds and heavy rain are reported in northwest Kansas in a powerful storm system that could produce large tornadoes in the state before nightfall.

In a strongly-worded statement Thursday, the National Weather Service warned that parts of Kansas could see hail bigger than baseballs, 80-mph-plus winds and “a few strong to violent long-lived tornadoes.”

Forecasters say severe thunderstorms will form by late afternoon in central and south-central Kansas and move toward eastern Kansas, Nebraska, northwestern Missouri and Iowa.

68 Tornadoes Have Hit Mississippi In 2008

The Storm Prediction Center – the National Weather Service office responsible for severe weather forecasts and tallies – says that 1,330 tornadoes have been reported this year. Not all of those tornadoes have been confirmed yet, but even still the numbers of confirmed tornadoes are already nearly three times that of the most active periods of previous years.

The National Weather Service Forecast Office in Jackson says 68 tornadoes have been confirmed to have touched down in Mississippi so far this year. In 2007, a total of 33 tornadoes touched down. In less than half the time the number of tornadoes has more than doubled.

Tornadoes and heavy rain struck Northern Minnesota

At least two tornadoes broke loose Friday morning in the far northeastern corner of Minnesota, where heavy overnight rains led to flash flooding throughout Cook County and the city of Grand Marais. About 5 inches of rain fell at Grand Marais.

Powerful storms kill 8 in Iowa and Minnesota

Tornadoes Wreak Havoc in Oklahoma

Severe thunderstorms accompanied by large hail and tornadoes struck the US midsection Sunday, killing eight people and destroying tens of homes, authorities said.

Iowa Gov. Chet Culver issued a disaster proclamation for Black Hawk, Buchanan and Butler counties, hundreds of homes were evacuated. At least 20 people were unaccounted for in Minnesota.

The latest toll bring the total number of dead to about 113 in U.S. tornadoes so far this year. Tornado season intensifies in the spring and early summer, and again in the late fall. (Source)
