Predicted thunderstorms could spawn tornadoes from astern Iowa to western Pennsylvania

The Storm Prediction Center has forecast possibility of severe thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon and evening from the northern Plains across the Upper Midwest and Ohio Valley and into the Northeast and New England. The primary threats will be large hail and damaging winds, especially from eastern Iowa to western Pennsylvania. Some of the storms could produce isolated tornadoes: NWS

Severe storms cut power to hundreds of thousands, prompt disaster declaration in AR, states of emergency in MS, AL

Powerful winter storms continue to pound the U.S.  northeast with high winds and heavy snow, forcing thousands of flight cancellations.

• Governor Beebe has declared a statewide disaster in the wake of Tuesday’s winter storm. Hundred of thousands remain without power in Central Arkansas amid freezing temperatures.
  • Beebe made similar declarations on Wednesday to ease federal regulations for the transport of utility crews and supplies, as well as poultry and poultry feed.
• Up to 10 inches of snow is forecast for northern New England
• Storms dumped record snow in Arkansas and north Texas.
• “White-out” conditions reported in Indianapolis.
• At least a dozen people have been killed and dozens more injured in weather-related incidents.
• Gov. Walker declared a state of emergency in Wisconsin last week as the winter storm approached.

Snow Record Broken

A record snowfall of 4 inches was set at Elko, NV on Wednesday. This breaks the old record of 3 inches set in 1923.

Nicaragua

San Cristóbal, Nicaragua’s tallest volcano, has erupted spewing a 1.3-km column of volcanic cloud into the air.

• About 1,500 residents who live within a 3-km radius of the volcano have been told to leave the area.
• The 1,745-meter volcano sits about 140km northwest of the capital Managua.

Dozens of tornadoes in southern U.S. cause death, injuries and destruction

A severe weather system barreled  through the southern United States on Christmas Day, spawning at least 28 tornadoes in Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas, and winter storms in Oklahoma.

• Extreme weather across the country has left at least three people dead, as of posting, and dozens more injured.
  
• Winter storm warnings and other extreme weather warnings stretched from Oklahoma to Pennsylvania.
• The storms knocked out power to at least a million customers.
• The system will move into the midwestern U.S., causing blizzard conditions in Arkansas, Ohio, Illinois and Indiana, NWS said.

Thunderstorms cause serious damage in New York

“This afternoon’s severe thunderstorms, including strong winds, possible tornadoes, and large hail, caused serious damage in Chemung County and the surrounding areas,” said Governor Cuomo, declaring a state of emergency.

SPC filtered Storm Reports for July 26, 2012

The storms uprooted or shredded thousands of trees, tore roofs off many homes and businesses, caused damage to public and private property, and left many people trapped in their cars, according to reports.

• About 1,000 flights were canceled around the U.S. Thursday due to the storms.
• Most of the damage occurred in New York and Pennsylvania.
• About half a million customers lost electricity.
• New York and  Pennsylvania reported two storm-related deaths, as of posting.
• winds in excess of 70mph (113-kph)  were reported in  Kentucky, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania.

Deadly Tornadoes Attack U.S. Midwest

Dozens of tornadoes tore through the U.S. midsection as Kansas declared disaster emergency

More than 120 tornadoes pummel Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska and Indiana leaving at least 5 people dead in Woodward, NW Oklahoma, and forcing Kansas governor to declare a disaster emergency.

• Iowa.  About 75 percent of the small town of Thurman (Fremont County) has been destroyed. The town has been evacuated with an emergency shelter in a nearby town. No power in the town, SPC reported.
• Oklahoma.  Numerous reports of major structural damage on western and northern part of Woodward; at least 5 killed and many injured.
• Kansas.  A tornado has caused widespread damage and power outages in Wichita, Kansas, but there were bno reports of deaths or injuries as of posting.
• Tornadoes have damaged or destroyed many homes, businesses, a jail, a hospital and an Air Force base aaround the region, reports said.
• Nebraska.  Baseball-sized hail tore siding from houses and shattered windows in Petersburg, about 130 miles NW of Omaha.
• Sedgwick County, Kansas, declared a state of disaster and said the storm damage could top $280 million.
•  Severe weather is expected to continue Sunday “from east Texas and Arkansas and up into the Great Lakes,” said Storm Prediction Center (SPC).

Philippine flash floods and mudslides affect thousands, destroy crops

Days of heavy rains have caused flash floods in the towns of Claveria and Sta. Praxedes in the northern Philippine province of Cagayan leaving at least 1,200 families displaced, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said.

“A total of 31 out of 41 villages were inundated in Claveria, affecting 877 families. Ten villages were also inundated in Sta. Praxedes, affecting 338 families.”

• Mudslides  have destroyed houses and dozens of hectares of rice paddies vegetables.
• Flash floods and landslides have claimed dozens of lives in the Philippines since the begin9ing of the year.

Other Global Disasters

• China. Climate-related disasters left [at least] 66 people dead or missing, and affected about 22 million people in the first quarter of 2012 in the Chinese mainland, according to official sources.  
  • The disasters resulted in direct economic losses of 9.63 billion yuan (1.53 billion U.S. dollars) from January to March 2012.
  • Extreme weather events destroyed or damaged more than 2.4 million hectares of crops  and 200,000 homes, the report said.

Significant Events

U.S.A.  The U.S. has recorded its warmest March since records began in 1895, with  more than 15,000 warm temperature records broken during the month, NOAA reported.

• “The average temperature of 51.1°F was 8.6 degrees above the 20^th century average for March and 0.5°F warmer than the previous warmest March in 1910. Of the more than 1,400 months (117+ years) that have passed since the U.S. climate record began, only one month, January 2006, has seen a larger departure from its average temperature than March 2012.”
•   Preliminary data shows that 15,272 warm temperature records were broken (7,755 daytime records, 7,517 nighttime records).
• 25 states east of the Rockies saw their warmest March on record, with an additional 15 states recording temperatures ranking among their ten warmest, said NOAA.
• In contrast, temperatures in Alaska during March, which are not included in the contiguous U.S. average value, were the tenth coolest on record.
• “The first three months of 2012 were also record warm for the contiguous United States with an average temperature of 42.0°F, 6.0°F above the long-term average.”
• As of April 3^rd, 36.8 percent of the contiguous U.S. was in drought,  an increase from 28.8 percent a year ago on April 5, 2011, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.
• SPC received 223 preliminary tornado reports during March, about 3 times the averages of 80 tornadoes for the month. “The majority of the tornadoes occurred during the March 2^nd-3^rd outbreak across the Ohio Valley and Southeast, which caused 40 fatalities. Total losses from this event are estimated to exceed $1.5 billion dollars, making this the first event of 2012 to exceed one billion dollars in damages and losses.”

More severe weather expected Tuesday

U.S. Tornadoes kill at least 58 in East, South since Thursday

The weekend tornado outbreak killed 45 people and destroyed many homes and businesses in the East and South, NWS reported. Severe thunderstorms are forecast in the Southeast again Tuesday.

“Forecasters said a disturbance moving from the Midwest this morning could account for minor snow accumulations across southern Michigan into northwest New York by tonight. Largely-scattered rain and higher elevation snow showers are expected to move into the Plains and the Midwest tonight into Tuesday. This system is forecast to produce a substantial outbreak of thunderstorms and possibly severe weather from the southern Plains into the Ohio Valley. Potentially heavy rain will impact already-elevated river levels.” NWS reported.

“A large area of the Midwest, central Plains and the Southeast will be at slight risk for severe weather development Tuesday with a core area at Moderate Risk,” Storm Prediction Center forecasters said.

Parts of Missouri, northern Arkansas, the southern two-thirds of Illinois, all of Indiana except the northern quarter, extreme SW Ohio, W. and N. Kentucky and extreme NW Tennessee.

Deadly  tornado clusters devastate southern U.S., killing 50 injuring 500

Waves of tornadoes battering southern United States, killing about 50 people and injuring hundreds of others from Oklahoma through the South and on to the Atlantic Coast since Thursday, have carved swathes of destruction in their wake, with hundreds of homes left destroyed or severely damaged.

In the worst tornado assault ever recorded, 248 twisters have devastated large areas in 14 states from Thursday through Saturday. A total of 1,038 tornadoes, wind gusts and hail events were reported, according to the logs kept at the Storm Prediction Center.

States of Emergency

• Virginia.  Gov McDonnell has declared a state of emergency following widespread damage caused by powerful thunderstorms, which left at least six people dead in the central and southern parts of the state on Sunday, a report said.
• North Carolina. Gov Perdue has declared a state of emergency for North Carolina because of the destruction caused by deadly storms and tornadoes across the state, reports said. Sever storms ripped through central North Carolina causing multiple fatalities and much destruction.
• Alabama.  Gov Bentley is declaring a State of Emergency for all Alabama counties following severe weather which brought tornados, severe t-storms, hail and strong winds earlier today, a report said. At least one person was killed in
• “This is a serious storm that has already caused significant damage across the South. I hope Alabamians take extreme caution while these storms move through,” said Bentley.
• “There are confirmed reports of tornado touchdowns in the following Alabama counties:  Monroe, Greene, Marengo, Sumter, Tuscaloosa and Choctaw. Multiple injuries have been reported in Sumter, Greene and Marengo counties.” The report said.
• “An apparent tornado struck Bellington Circle approximately 6 miles south of Linden [Marengo County.] Law enforcement confirmed 1 fatality and at least 4 injuries.” The National Weather Service reported.
• Mississippi. “A State of Emergency has been declared for 14 Mississippi counties after tornadoes and high winds whipped through the state today, causing multiple injuries, shutting down I-20, ravaging homes and businesses and knocking out power to thousands.” Said a report.
• Oklahoma.  Gov Fallin has declared a state of emergency in 26 Oklahoma counties, a report said. The declaration include the following counties: Atoka, Carter, Coal, Creek, Custer, Delaware, Harper, Johnston, Latimer, LeFlore, Lincoln, Love, Marshall, Murray, Okfuskee, Okmulgee, Osage, Pittsburg, Pontotoc, Pushmataha, Rogers, Seminole, Tulsa, Wagoner, Washington and Woodward.
