Flood-ravaged Britain now threatened by ice and heavy snow: Report

Arctic blast and heavy snow plunging Britain into frigid conditions following destruction by mega storms.

The Environment Agency issued a dozen severe flood warnings indicating  indicate “danger to life” as rivers reach dangerous levels.

It also posted  hundreds of flood warnings and flood alerts following  a gigantic storm surge spawned by strong winds and high tides which destroyed coastal towns.

Devon, Cornwall, parts of  Wales and southeast England were the worst hit areas, according to reports.

“Hundreds of homes were flooded and officials closed the Thames Barrier to protect properties in London,” said a report.

“This weekend and into the beginning of next week there is more wind and rain on the way with 80mph gusts in parts and up to three inches of rain likely in 72 hours. Torrential downpours are going to be devastating in parts of the UK which have been given absolutely no let-up from the stormy weather,” the report quoted a meteorologist as saying.

Prime Minister David Cameron yesterday called another emergency COBRA meeting to review the crisis.

He said: “A range of ministers from across government will be working very closely with local councils, power companies, utility and transport companies, making sure all those organizations are prepared for the bad weather.”

Fierce storms have lashed the UK since before Christmas with the ­latest onslaught on Thursday night and yesterday.

Homes have once again been left without electricity after high winds tore down power lines while transport networks have been crippled.

Winter 2013 – 2014 is forecast to be “exceptionally severe,” with above-average snowfall and frigid temperatures, meteorologists say.

Heavy Snow and Arctic Gales to Hit UK Thursday

Massive snow and violent gales could hit much of the UK through Friday

The UK  Met Office has issued severe weather warnings for violent gales across much of the country on Thursday as well as a snow warning for Scotland through Friday.

With dangerous windchill, overnight temperatures are forecast to plunge to -11ºC in much of the North through weekend and to -5C in the South, including the capital London.

Orange [“Amber”] Warning of Wind

“Westerly gales are expected to spread southwards across northern and central areas of the UK on Thursday, with widespread gusts of 60 to 70 mph. However within the area of the amber warning gusts are expected to reach 80 mph in places and perhaps as high as 90 mph in exposed parts of the north and west of Scotland,” warned the UK Met Office.

Warning also includes  potential for significant coastal flooding along the East Coast of England, parts of southeast Scotland, north Wales and northwest England…  causing significant disruption along coastal routes.

Fukushima Nuke Plant Leaking Large Quantities of Radioactive Water

Up to 120 tons of radioactive water may have leaked from one of the seven underground storage tanks at Japan’s crippled Fukushima nuclear plant, contaminating the surrounding ground, Tokyo Electric Power Co was reported as saying.

The storage tanks hold about 13,000 cubic meters of contaminated water, which  TEPCO is transferring to other tanks nearby, Kyodo news wire quoted the utility as saying.

Third large oil spill in 7 days: Shell Pipeline ruptures in Texas

Thousands of gallons of oil have spilled from Shell Pipeline in West Columbia, Texas, the third incident of the kind in a week, said a report.

Manatee death toll rising in Florida despite Red Tide ebbing

Red Tide, a deadly algae bloom, has killed at least 241 manatees in Florida so far this year, surpassing the previous record of 151 deaths set in 1996.

The recent Red Tide bloom in the Gulf of Mexico began in September 2012  covering a 70-mile (113-km) stretch of southwest Florida’s coast from Sarasota County to Lee County, which is  home to a large population of the state’s estimated 5,000 manatees, said a report.

Meanwhile, deaths of 85 manatees since July on Florida’s Atlantic coast remain a mystery. The mass die-off occurred  in the Indian River Lagoon, Brevard County.

• One of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia, Karangetang, aka, Api Siau, is a located on the northern part of Siau Island.
• Karangetang was one of the three volcanoes that erupted after the The Great East Japan Earthquake struck on March 11, 2011.

Frozen Britain

UK temperatures over the past week fell to among the coldest experienced in April for nearly 100 years, with maximum temperatures barely above the freezing in many parts of the southeast, reports said.

At -11.2ºC (11.8 degrees Fahrenheit), the village of Braemar in Scotland, about 90 km west of Aberdeen, held the joint coldest weather anywhere in the UK in April for nearly a century.

US Weather: Snow Impacting the Upper Midwest and Northern Great Lakes

‘A storm system moving through the Upper Midwest will bring a round of late-season winter weather to parts of the northern Great Lakes region on Saturday. The heaviest snow will fall from northeastern Minnesota through northern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. These areas could see up to 6 inches of snow.’ NOAA reported.

100MPH Winds Batter Britain

Strong winds and torrential rains cause flash floods across much of Britain, after a week of Arctic storms

Many properties in southern England were flooded forcing scores of families out of their homes, reports say. Flooding also caused extensive damage in other parts of the country, as well as in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Wight.

Strong winds with gusts of up to 100MPH fell trees, ripped tiles off roofs and downed power lines… at least one woman was killed after  she was impaled by a branch of a tree that fell on her car.

The disasters followed  a week of arctic weather including several inches of snow that fell in some parts of the country.
