More than 2,300 people killed or wounded in Iraq last month
A total of 867 Iraqis were killed and another 1,459 were wounded in acts of terrorism, violence and armed conflict in Iraq in May 2016*, according to casualty figures recorded by the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).
The number of civilians killed in May was 468 (including 19 federal police, Sahwa civil defense, Personal Security Details, facilities protection police, fire department), and the number of civilians wounded was 1,041 (including 96 federal police, Sahwa civil defence, Personal Security Details, facilities protection police, fire department).
A total of 399 members of the Iraqi Security Forces (including Peshmerga, SWAT and militias fighting alongside the Iraqi Army but excluding Anbar Operations) were killed and 418 were wounded.
The overall casualty figures have risen over the previous month of April, where a total of 741 were killed and 1,374 were wounded.
The figures for May are likely to increase because they do not include the casualties from Anbar Governorate, scene of heavy combat in recent days and where the ongoing conflict has made any kind of verification extremely difficult.
“Iraqi civilians going about their daily life have been the target of terrorist suicide bombers and car bombs. In some of these attacks, pilgrims have been singled out. Residential neighbourhoods have sustained heavy damage. Armed clashes have spared no one. But the will of the Iraqi people, despite all the carnage, remains unshaken and this gives hope for the future. Joining the people of Iraq, in particular the residents of Baghdad where a number of attacks took place, I urge the Government to make every effort to prevent the occurrence of such outrages,” said The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (SRSG) for Iraq.
According to the casualties recorded for May, Baghdad was the worst affected Governorate with 1,007 civilian casualties (267 killed and 740 wounded. Ninewa 56 killed, Diyala 49 killed and 93 wounded, Muthana 41 killed and 75 wounded, Salahadin 35 killed and 55 wounded, while Kirkuk had 7 killed and 62 wounded.
* CAVEATS: In general, UNAMI has been hindered in effectively verifying casualties in conflict areas. In some cases, UNAMI could only partially verify certain incidents. UNAMI has also received, without being able to verify, reports of large numbers of casualties along with unknown numbers of persons who have died from secondary effects of violence after having fled their homes due to exposure to the elements, lack of water, food, medicines and health care. For these reasons, the figures reported have to be considered as the absolute minimum.

Third of Iraqi population urgently require some form of humanitarian assistance: UNAMI
The Government of Iraq and the United Nations have called for international help to respond to the growing humanitarian crisis in Iraq.
Ten million Iraqis, nearly one third of the population, urgently require some form of humanitarian assistance, including 3.3 million people who have fled their homes since January 2014. Thousands of Iraqis are in areas under siege by combatant forces, unable to escape or seek safety. In addition, 250,000 Syrian refugees have sought safety in Iraq, the majority in the Kurdistan Region, where more than one million displaced people are also residing; 500,000 people have returned to their home areas, where they are trying to rebuild their lives.
“We face a major humanitarian emergency. We need the international community’s support to prevent further deterioration,” the Minister of Migration and Displacement and Chairman of the Higher Committee for the Relief and Sheltering of IDPs, said.

9 Percent of remaining Iraqi population now displaced
More than 3.1 million Iraqis have been internally displaced by the ongoing bloody conflict, said UN spokesperson on Tuesday.
At least 300,000 people have been displaced from and within Anbar province including more than 250,000 individuals from Ramadi, the capital of governorate, since military operations began in April, said the UN Assistance (!) Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).
The DTM has identified 3,112,914 persons displaced by conflict in Iraq. The majority, 67 per cent, are sheltered in private settings that include rented housing, host families and hotels. A smaller but significant number, 20 per cent, are identified as living in critical shelter arrangements, which include unfinished buildings, religious buildings, informal settlements and schools. Eight per cent of those currently displaced in Iraq are living in camp settings.

Yemen Casualty Toll: 1,042 Dead, 3,700 Wounded
Yemen’s ministry of health reported Thursday that the death toll in the country’s ongoing conflict has reached 1,042, with more than 3,700 others wounded. The latest figures include fatalities in Aden from ground fighting that left 185 dead, and 1,700 wounded.
Muslim Massacres
Last year, ISIL “carried out attacks deliberately and systematically targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure, with the intention of killing and wounding civilians,” as a result of which thousands of people were killed or wounded, said the UN in a report published October 2014.
This year, air raids led by Saudi Arabia, which have failed to achieve the goal of bringing the corrupt Yemeni President Hadi back to office, have killed more than a thousand people and wounded thousands more.
Saudi Royal Family, the so-called “guardians of Islam’s holiest shrine,” and their allies, four of the five other members of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Qatar, in addition to Egypt, Jordan, Sudan and Morocco, have carried out air raids killing civilians, and deliberately destroying much of the public infrastructure.

Hundreds killed, many wounded, tens of thousands displaced amid Saudi air raids in Yemen
At least 519 people have been killed, about 1,700 others wounded in the past two weeks—more than 90 of them children—and tens of thousands of people have been forced to flee their homes, some by crossing the sea to Djibouti and Somalia, said Valerie Amos, the UN Undersecretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator in her latest statement on Yemen.
Electricity, water and essential medicines are in short supply, she added.
“Before this recent escalation in the violence, millions of Yemenis were already extremely vulnerable.”
The Air War Massacre Will Backfire
Saudi military air war massacre against the defenseless Yemen people will ultimately backfire, says journalist Thomas C. Mountain.
“In 2009 the Saudi military’s incompetence was exposed when their major offensive against the Houthi’s along the Saudi/Yemen border was routed and in the following Houthi counter offensive a large chunk of Saudi territory was captured by the lightly armed Houthi fighters.”
“Still stinging from their last military humiliation 6 years ago at the hands of the Houthi tribal fighters in Yemen, the Saudi Arabian royal family has embarked on what is highly likely to turn into Saudi’s ‘Vietnam’ with their latest attempt at invading Yemen.”
Houthis, having seized the presidential palace in Aden on Thursday, are now threatening to attack Saudi Arabia, should the aerial bombardment of Yemeni territory continue, said reports.
Even the U.S. should be weary of Saudi misadventures by now.

Mount Sinabung Erupts
North Sumatra’s Mount Sinabung erupted again on April 3, 2015 ejecting a 2-km column of ash into the air and forcing evacuations of several villages closest to the volcano, official said on Friday.
The 2,460-meter thigh volcano is located about 40 km NNW of the Lake Toba, the site of Toba supervolcano.
Toba’s latest supereruption, which occurred about 70,000 years (73,000 ± 4,000) ago, may have plunged Earth into a global volcanic winter of 6–10 years and possibly a 1,000-year-long cooling episode, according to Toba catastrophe theory.
It had an estimated volcanic explosivity index (VEI) of 8 (described as “Apocalyptic”), and was responsible for 2,800km³ of erupted matter, including 800 km³ of volcanic ash.
[FIRE-EARTH models show total erupted matter from the supereruption may have been as much as 20,000 km³.]
