Eurozone unemployment rate hits new record high

The official number of people unemployed in the 17 member states rose by 33,000 in February, surpassing 19.07 million, said Eurostat.

• The highest rate was 26.4% in Greece (December 2012 figure).
• Spain’s unemployment rate rose to 26.3% in February.
• The rate in Portugal was largely unchanged at 17.5%.

CHINA

China’s Coal Addiction Claims More Lives

Two explosions in three days at the same Chinese coal mine have killed at least 34 miners and left  24 others missing, said a report.

The blasts occurred at a state-owned colliery operating under the name of Tonghua Mining (Group), located at the Babao Coal Mine in Jiangyuan District, city of Baishanin in China’s northeastern Jilin Province

The first blast occurred on late Friday, killing 28 people and injuring 13 others.

NIGERIA

19 killed, 4,500 displaced in Nigeria’s ethnic violence

Attacks on three communities in ethnically divided central Nigeria have left 19 people dead and 4,500 others displaced, reports said.

• The gun attacks followed a long-running dispute between a mainly Muslim Fulanis and the mostly Christian Atakar ethnic groups in the Kaura district, a remote region of Kaduna state, AFP reported.

• “Apart from the gun attacks, the assailants also set fire to homes,” a local government official told AFP.

• “There has been some misunderstanding between the Fulani and the Atakar communities for some time,” Kaduna state police commissioner said.

Jobless rate in the euro area rose to a new high of 11.7% in October

European Central Bank has warned the single currency zone would not emerge from its crisis until the second half of 2013 [wishful thinking?]

Unemployment rate in recessionary euro area climbed to 11.7% in October up from 10.4% last year.

[Eurozone, officially the euro area, is an economic and monetary union of 17 European Union (EU) member states using euro (€) as common currency.]

• October 2012 rise was the 14th consecutive monthly record since September 2011 when unemployment reached 10.3 percent.

• An additional 173,000 were out of work across the euro area, bringing the total to 18.7 million.

• Some 25.92 million people across the 27-state European Union single market were out of work in October, Eurostat said.

• The youth unemployment rate climbed to 23.9% in the euro area and to 23.4% in the EU single market compared with 21.2 % and 21.9 percent a year ago, leaving about one in four young Europeans out of work in October.

• Spain’s jobless rate rose to 26.2% from 25.8% the previous month (55.9 percent of under 25s were out of work), and Italy’s climbed to 11.1% from 10.8%.
• Greece’s unemployment rate jumped to 25.4% from 18.4% a year ago (at least 57 percent of under 25s were out of work), and Portugal’s 16.3% from 13.7%.
• France’s jobless rate was 10.7% and Ireland’s 14.7% in October.

Socioeconomic Epidemic: ‘They leave us without future!’

Millions of people across 23 countries in Europe marked the European Day of Action and Solidarity, demonstrating against unemployment, dire economic prospects and the so-called anti-austerity measures.

• In Spain, where unemployment rate is 26%, and in Portugal, which has an unemployment rate of about 16%, millions of people took to the streets, while public services and international flights came to a stand still amid general strikes.
  • Demonstrators distributed leaflets which read:
    • ‘We have no future!’
    • ‘They leave us without a future.’
    • ‘They are the guilty ones!’
    • ‘Austerity kills dignity. Reclaim Europe!’
• In Greece and Italy, hundrdes of thousands of people marched through the streets.
• In Belgium and France, public services were severely affected due to strikes and large-scale rallies.
• In major cities across Germany, Poland and other EU countries, hundreds of rallies were held.
• Hundreds of people in Italy, Portugal and Spain were injured amid violent clashes with the police,  and hundreds more arrested.
