Crop Disasters Declared in Six States

Crops destroyed by drought, excessive rain, flooding, high winds and hail

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has designated 49 counties and parishes across six states—Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oregon, Texas, and Washington—as crop disaster areas due to damages and losses caused by drought (Oregon and Washington), and excessive rain, flooding, high winds and hail in the other four states.

Crop Disaster Designation #1  due to damages and losses caused by the combined effects of excessive rain, flooding, high winds and hail that occurred from April 27, 2015, through June 26, 2015.

The disaster areas in Louisiana are the parishes of Allen, Ascension, Assumption, Avoyelles, Bienville, Bossier, Caddo, Caldwell, Catahoula, Concordia, De Soto, East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, Evangeline, Franklin, Grant, Iberia, Iberville, La Salle, Madison, Natchitoches, Pointe Coupee, Rapides, Red River, Richland, Sabine, St. Helena, St. Landry, St. Martin, Tensas, Vernon, Webster, West Baton Rouge, West Feliciana and Winn.

Other disaster area are as follows:

• Arkansas. Lafayette and Miller counties.
• Mississippi. Amite and Wilkinson counties.
• Texas. Cass, Harrison, Marion and Panola counties.

Crop Disaster Designation #2 due to damages and losses caused by a recent drought.

• Oregon. Clackamas, Hood River, Multnomah and Wasco counties.
• Washington. Klickitat and Skamania counties.

Crop Disasters 2015

Beginning January 7, 2015 USDA has declared crop disasters in at least 1,500 counties, or county equivalents, across 25 states: Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Virginia, West Virginia, Washington and Wyoming.

USDA has also designated 14 municipalities in Puerto Rico as drought disaster areas.

About 99 percent of the 2015 crop disaster designations so far are due to drought.

In 2014, USDA declared crop disasters in at least 2,904 counties across 44 states. Most of the designations were due to drought.

Those states were:

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has designated 76 additional counties across five states—Florida, Idaho, Montana, Utah and Washington—as well as 14 municipalities in Puerto Rico, as crop disaster areas due to losses caused by drought.

The disaster designations are as follows:

Drought Crop Disaster Designation #1

• Florida: Broward, Collier, Hendry, Miami-Dade, Monroe and Palm Beach counties.

Drought Crop Disaster Designation #2

• Idaho: Benewah, Bonner, Boundary, Clearwater, Idaho, Kootenai, Lewis, Latah, Nez Perce and Shoshone counties.
• Montana: Lincoln, Mineral, Missoula and Sanders counties.
• Washington: Pend Oreille, Spokane and Whitman counties.

Drought crop disasters declared for 8 counties in Idaho

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has designated eight additional counties in Idaho as crop disaster areas due to losses caused by drought.

The disaster areas are Bannock, Bingham, Blaine, Bonneville, Butte, Caribou, Jefferson and Power counties.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has designated a total of 48 additional counties in five states—Arizona, California, Nevada, Texas and Utah—as crop disaster areas due to damages and losses caused by drought.

The disaster designations are for the following areas:

• Arizona: Coconino, Mohave, Gila, La Paz, Navajo and Yavapai counties.
• California: Butte, Colusa, Contra Costa, Del Norte, El Dorado, Glenn, Humboldt,   Kern, Lake, Los Angeles, Mendocino, Napa, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Sacramento, San Bernardino, Santa Barbara, Sierra, Siskiyou, Solano, Sonoma, Sutter, Trinity, Ventura, Yolo and Yuba counties.
• Nevada: Clark, Lincoln, Carson City, Douglas and Washoe counties.

Drought and winterkill spell disaster for 61 counties across the U.S.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has designated a total of 61 counties in five states as agricultural disaster areas due to damages and losses caused by the worsening drought, and winterkill.

Drought Disaster

USDA has designated a total of 5 counties in Idaho as agricultural disaster areas due to damages and losses caused by the worsening drought.

The latest disaster designations, issued on July 10 include both primary and contiguous disaster areas.

Winterkill: Disasters  Caused by Extreme Weather Events

USDA has further designated as disaster areas a total of 56 counties  in Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin and South Dakota due to damages and losses caused by the combined effects of heavy rainfall followed by freezing temperatures and multiple periods of thawing and refreezing, resulting in winterkill that occurred between January 1 and May 15, 2013 in 56 counties.

Disaster Declared for 140 Counties in 10 States

USDA declares agricultural disasters in 140 counties in ten states

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has designated a total of 140 counties in ten states as agricultural disaster areas due to damages and losses caused by the ongoing drought (85 counties), and the combined effects of excessive rain, excessive snow, and multiple periods of thawing and refreezing (55 counties).

Drought Disaster

USDA has designated a total of 85 counties in seven state—California, Colorado, Nebraska, New Mexico, South Dakota, Utah, Wyoming—as agricultural disaster areas due to damages and losses caused by the ongoing drought.

The latest disaster designations, issued on July 3 include both primary and contiguous disaster areas.

Winterkill: Disaster caused by Extreme Weather

USDA has further designated as disaster areas a total of 55 counties  in Wisconsin, Michigan and Minnesota due to damages and losses caused by the combined effects of excessive rain, excessive snow, and multiple periods of thawing and refreezing, resulting in winterkill that occurred Jan. 1 – May 21, 2013.

Winter Storm Warnings in Effect for Parts of  Central Plains and Upper Midwest: NWS

National Weather Service (NWS) has issued snowstorm warnings for Minnesota and Wisconsin effective tonight and early Thursday. The rare May snowstorm could dump as much as 6 to 12 inches of snow across parts of Minnesota and Wisconsin .

Moderate to occasional heavy snow will continue tonight and early Thursday across portions of southern Minnesota and west central Wisconsin. There will be a sharp cut off in snow totals across the area with the heaviest totals near and just east of a line from Mankato to the eastern Twin Cities metro to Balsam Lake in Wisconsin. The snow totals will also diminish farther east in Wisconsin. Roads may become slushy or snow covered early Thursday morning when the heaviest snow is falling. The heaviest snow has  shifted a bit farther east than what was previously expected.

Meantime, NWS has issued Heat Advisory for SF areas effective from 1:00 pm to 9:00 pm PDT Thursday.

Hundreds flee as Banning fire consumes thousands of acres

The Summit fire, a fast-moving wildfire fanned by Santa Ana winds, raged out of control consuming 3,000 acres on Wednesday in Riverside County, forcing hundreds of residents to flee their homes, said a report.

• A thick pall of smoke created by the blaze stretched for miles affecting air quality in the region.

• The fire was fueled by 35 mph winds, low humidity of about 12% with temperatures in the low 80s.

• California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection has responded to more than 680 wildfires so far this year, more than 200 above the average for the period, the report quoted the agency as saying.

At least 62 additional counties across 6 states—Georgia, Missouri, New Mexico, North Carolina, South Carolina and Texas—have been declared drought disaster areas by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) due to damages and losses caused by the recent drought. The latest designations cover both primary and contiguous disaster areas.

• As of January 23, 2013 some 917 counties (650 primary and 267 contiguous) across 2 dozen states have been designated as drought disaster areas, USDA reported.

The states of Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska and Oklahoma remain in severe drought or worse, the U.S. Drought Monitor reported.

The worst levels of drought continued to grow in Kansas which produces about a fifth of the total U.S. wheat.

• The extreme drought in Kansas grew to 79.53 percent, up from 79.34 percent, and exceptional drought spread to 36.14 percent of the state from 34.87 percent.

Northern United States

Meantime, a deadly Arctic blast that gripped the U.S. Midwest and Northeast on Tuesday brought “life-threatening temperatures in Minnesota and northern Wisconsin.”

• Icy winds made some areas feel as cold as minus 50 degrees Fahrenheit (-46ºC).

• Up to 50cm of snow fell in NE Ohio, NW Pennsylvania and upstate New York, media reported.

• Hypothermia and icy conditions have claimed at least half dozen lives in Ohio, Minnesota and Illinois.

• The deep freeze is expected to last for several days.

NC declares a state of emergency after landslide

North Carolina Gov. McCrory has declared a state of emergency for mountain counties affected by a major landslide triggered by extreme rain events earlier this month.

• A major landslide destroyed a 70-meter section of US 441 on January 15.

• The emergency declaration covers Graham, Jackson and Swain counties and areas within the Qualla Boundary of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee, media reported.

Drought disaster plagues additional counties in the Dakotas, Hawaii, Minnesota, Wisconsin

Forty-six additional counties across the Dakotas, Hawaii, Minnesota and Wisconsin have been declared agricultural disaster areas (includes both primary and contiguous designations) due to damages and losses caused by the recent drought, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) reported.

US Drought Disaster list joined by 92 additional counties across 9 states

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) designated 92 counties across eight states as primary and contiguous disaster areas due to damages and losses caused by the recent drought.

• The states are Alabama, Georgia, Iowa,  Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
• As of September 19, 2012  a total of 2,348 counties across 43 states have been designated as agricultural  disaster areas due to the drought, this year.

U.S. Drought 2012

Drought has set yet another record high in the 12-year data, U.S. Drought Monitor reported. Nearly two-thirds (64.82 percent) of Contiguous United States (54.25 percent of the country) is now in moderate drought or worse, the largest percentage ever recorded at that level.
