Deadly Tornado Hits Texas

A dozen dead, more than 100 injured as N. Texas tornado flattens scores of homes

A deadly tornado hit Granbury in Hood County, Texas Wednesday night, claiming a dozen lives, injuring more than 100 others and destroying scores of homes.

There are also reports of an unknown number of people being trapped under the debris.

• The powerful twister that hit Hood County was part of a system of severe thunderstorms that spawned at least two other tornadoes across North Texas.

• A spokesman for MedStar Mobile Healthcare, told reporters the tornado had touched down several times in Hood, Tarrant, Dallas and Parker counties.

• “With these types of tornadoes, they touch down; they lift up; they touch down. They tend to hopscotch,” he said.

Major Winter Storm Hits U.S. Midwest, Targeting New England

Weather Hazards forecast for Friday across the U.S.

‘Snow, heavy at times, will impact the Upper Great Lakes, Washington and Oregon Cascades, and northern Rockies on Friday. Meanwhile, significant ice accumulations are possible for the central Appalachians. Further south, severe thunderstorms may develop along the central Gulf Coast, with heavy rainfall capable of river and/or flash flooding from southern Mississippi to the eastern Carolinas.’ NOAA forecasters reported.

The storm brought snow, sleet and freezing rain to the U.S. Midwest on Thursday, forcing hundreds of flight cancellations.

• The system is forecast to hit the East Coast, dumping heavy snow on parts of New England for a third consecutive weekend.
• Earlier, NWS issued a Winter Storm Warning for all of Kansas, nearly all of Missouri, as well as most of Nebraska and Iowa. Advisories were also issued for parts of South Dakota, Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia and Virginia, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, northern Texas and Arkansas.
• Kansas Governor  has already signed an emergency declaration for all 105 Kansans counties yesterday, shutting down all state offices in the Executive Branch.

State of Emergency Declared in Missouri

A state of emergency has been declared in Missouri in response to the severe winter storm.

• “A severe winter storm continues to bear down on communities across the state,” said Gov. Jay Nixon. “Missouri stands ready to help communities in need and to deploy the resources to keep folks safe. I urge all Missourians to keep a close eye on the weather and avoid unnecessary travel.”

Tornadoes Strike MS and LA

SPC received 18 storm reports including 3 tornadoes in Mississippi and Louisiana on Thursday.

• Moderate to heavy damage reported in counties Jefferson Davis (MS), as well as Concordia and Vernon (LA).

US Drought Monitor

As of February 19, 2013 more than two-thirds of Continental U.S. was experiencing drought or was abnormally dry. The U.S. Drought Monitor reported. The report was prepared before the current winter storm, which may have alleviated the drought conditions in parts of the High Plains.

Deadly storms, tornadoes hit US Southeast, Midwest

A massive system barreled through central and southern U.S., dumping heavy rains in Kentucky and Tennessee, spawning about two dozen tornadoes and leaving a path of destruction in its wake.

• The strongest tornado was an EF-2 which reportedly touched down near Mt. Juliet, a suburb of Nashville, with winds of about 115 mph.

• Tornadoes have been reported in Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, Mississippi, Missouri and Tennessee.
• The storms damaged or destroyed homes, killing at least three people and cutting power to tens of thousands of homes and businesses across the affected areas.
• Extreme rain and golf-ball sized hail struck several areas, NWS reported.
• “Authorities in Adairsville enacted a mandatory dusk-to dawn-curfew, where the storm affected a wide swath of homes and businesses,” said a report.

  • The tornado left several families displaced and caused millions of dollars in damage.

  • Ironically, the period coincides with Queen Elizabeth’s 60 year reign on the throne.

  • “Dr Chartres also called for action to tackle ‘depressingly high’ youth unemployment in Britain,” said a report.

• Portugal.   Driest February in more than 8 decades is devastating Portugal with “extreme” or “severe” drought covers about three-quarters of the country.
  • Farmers are reportedly praying for a miracle, but the drought is expected to last until at least the end of March, official forecasters said.
  • The drought is also boosting the number of wildfires in the country with as many as 200 forest fires reported on warmer days.

• Texas, USA.  Thousands of Texas rice farmers won’t be getting irrigation water anytime soon, while more than 40 percent of the state remains in severe drought.
  • The water level in Travis and Buchanan lakes are currently 3,200 acre-feet (1 billion gallons) short of the stage they must reach before the farmers can receive water, reports said.

• The Midwest and South, USA.  Death toll from multiple tornadoes that struck the US Midwest and South on Friday has risen to at least 39, a total of 52 for the week.
  • The Friday’s fatalities occurred in 5 states: Alabama (1), Georgia (1), Indiana (14), Kentucky (20) and Ohio (3).

• Kentucky. NWS has confirmed that an EF4 tornado hit Henryville, north of Louisville, with winds of 175MPH.
  • The tornado which struck on Saturday remained on the ground for 52 miles, measuring about 150 yards wide.
• Indiana. The state has issued disaster declarations for Clark, Gibson, Harrison, Jefferson, Posey, Ripley, Scott, Shelby, Vanderburgh, Warrick and Washington counties, after tornadoes and high winds left 14 dead and caused widespread damage and destruction.

Flooding Disasters

• Oregon. The Disaster President has declared a major disaster exists in the State of Oregon and ordered Federal aid to supplement state and local recovery efforts in the area affected by a severe winter storm, flooding, landslides, and mudslides during the period of January 17-21, 2012.
  • The severe winter storm, flooding, landslides, and mudslides caused significant damage in Benton, Columbia, Coos, Curry, Douglas, Hood River, Lane, Lincoln, Linn, Marion, Polk, and Tillamook counties.

Flooding Disasters in Australia

• Sydney, Australia. Unprecedented amounts of rain have fallen over the Australian state of NSW, since February, inundating more than 75 percent of the state.
  • Many rivers in the region are expected to peak more than 11 meters, forcing the emergency officials to close multiple bridges.
  • Some areas have received more rain in 48 hours than the annual average.
  • Thousands of people across the Australian state of NSW “face an indefinite wait before they can return to their homes as continuous heavy rain swells rivers across the state,” said a report.
  • “About 2,000 people in Sydney’s flood-threatened north-western fringes have been told to evacuate as emergency services battle what they say is a record event.”
  • Evacuation orders have been issued for several more areas.
  • Water was released from Sydney’s Warragamba Dam, which  reached full capacity last night for the first time in 14 years.
  • NSW is experiencing all-time record rains.
• Victoria, Australia.  Deadly floods have forced the evacuation of patients from a hospital in northeastern Victoria.
  • At least one person was found dead from flood-related causes. The victim’s body was found at Majors Creek in Araluen, reports said.
  • The floods are said to be the region’s worst in living memory.

Extreme weather devastated a vast region from the Ohio Valley to the Gulf Coast, spawning a large cluster of about 80 tornadoes that struck 10 states in the Midwest and south on Friday, killing at least 31 people, injuring scores more and destroying or damaging many hundreds of buildings.

• Kentucky. Governor Steve Beshear declared a statewide emergency Friday following deadly tornadoes which claimed at least 14 lives.
• Indiana. The southeastern corner of the state was severely damaged; at least 16 people were confirmed dead.
  • “Marysville is completely gone,” said Clark County Sheriff’s Maj. Chuck Adams [Marysville is located 10 miles north of Charlestown along Ind. 3.]
  • “We knew this was coming. We were watching the weather like everyone else,” Clark County Sheriff Danny Rodden said. “This was the worst-case scenario. There’s no way you can prepare for something like this.”
  • Several other small towns in southern Indiana have been leveled, reports said.

• Ohio. A state of emergency was declared in Clermont County, after tornadoes caused severe damage leaving at least 5 dead.
• Alabama. Tornadoes devastated two northern Alabama counties destroying or damaging about 250 homes.
  • Storms left at least one person dead in Tallapoosa County

• Illinois and Tennessee. Multiple tornadoes also struck Illinois and Tennessee.
• Earlier this week Tornadoes killed at least 13 people in Illinois, Kansas, Missouri and Tennessee.

Missouri Governor (Jay Nixon) has declared a statewide emergency in response to the deadly tornadoes and violent storms that struck southwest and southeast parts of the state.

• Missouri, USA.   The extreme weather system that moved across the Midwest and South spawned tornadoes and high winds and caused the loss of life, numerous injuries and significant damage to multiple communities across Missouri, including Branson, Buffalo, Cassville, Lebanon and Oak Ridge.
• The Midwest and South.  Death toll from a reported 36 tornadoes the struck the Midwest and Southern U.S. currently stands at 13, including 3 in the Tennessee.
• Kansas.  States of emergency have been declared in Butler, Chautauqua, Coffey, Cowley, Crawford, Douglas, Franklin, Harper, Kingman, Labette, Leavenworth, Marion, Montgomery, McPherson, Reno, Republic, Sumner, Wabaunsee and Wilson counties.
• Tennessee.  Severe storm and high winds left at least 3 people dead, a dozen injured and up to 100 homes damaged or destroyed.
• Kentucky. An EF2 tornado with winds of about 125 MPH struck Elizabeth town, Kentucky.
  • Tornadoes struck  four counties across the state.
  • Tornadoes and high winds flattened mobile homes, houses and businesses in Elizabeth town, Henderson, and Hodgenville, officials said.
  • NWS confirmed EF2 tornadoes in Morgan and Russell counties.
  • A state of emergency was declared in West Liberty where high  winds destroyed a church and many  buildings.
• West Virginia.   State of emergency has been declared in Marion County following torrential rains which left dozens of homes and businesses submerged under water.
  • Flash flooding also occurred across Harrison, Monongalia and Preston counties, reports said.

• U.S. Midwest. Violent storms devastated communities in the Midwest and South, killing at least 12 people across three states, injuring hundreds and destroying or damaging up to a thousand homes.
• Illinois. Gov. Pat Quinn of Illinois has declared Harrisburg a disaster area, after an EF4 tornado blasted through the town (pop: ~ 9,000), killing at least 6 people, injuring more than 100 others and flattening entire blocks of homes.
• Missouri. Governor Jay Nixon has declared Taney County a disaster area after an EF2 tornado with winds of about 130MPH touched down in Stone and Taney Counties in Missouri leaving a 22-mile path of destruction from the Kimberling City area to Branson.
  • The tornado impact injured 33 people and damaged/destroyed  more than 100 homes and businesses in Branson, reports said.
  • About 20 of the more than 200 hotels in Branson have been badly damaged including a large motel, officials said.
  • Branson, dubbed a ‘music Mecca,’ is a major tourist destination with about 8 million visitors arriving each year.

• The Next System. The storms are now heading for Mid-Atlantic states;  however, more destructive tornadoes may be spawned by the next system striking both the Midwest and South,  a meteorologist with the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla., said.

• Australia.  About  three-quarters of the Australian state of New South Wales (NSW) as well as parts of the two neighboring states of Victoria and the Northern Territory in the SE of the continent are affected by floods, reports said.
  • Thousands of people have been evacuated from Cooma, near the NSW Snowy Mountains, and Goulburn, midway between Sydney and Canberra.
  • Parts of Central Australia have received more than 100mm of rain in the past two days, about a half of  their annual rainfall, leaving many roads impassable.
    
  • “In the [Australian Capital Territory,] a large dam near Canberra being built after a severe drought four years ago was expected to overflow last night. The old dam, built in 1912, is completely submerged for the first time in its history,” said a report

• U.S. Midwest.   Aline of tornadoes pounded the Midwest, killing at least four people, injuring many and destroying/damaging hundreds of homes   in 4 states.
  • The first death was reported after a possible tornado hit a mobile home park in southwest Missouri, south of Buffalo, said the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office.
  • The storm system also knocked out power to all of Buffalo.
  • Branson and Lebanon in southwest Missouri were among the worst hit areas, with multiple injuries and “heavy damage” reported.
  • At least 11 tornadoes have been recorded by the Storm Prediction Center across Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri and Illinois, late Tuesday night .
  • Another tornado reportedly touch down in Indiana, and one in Kentucky.
• Illinois. At least 3 people were killed in Harrisburg, Ill., and dozens of homes were destroyed after a possible tornado swept through the area, a report said.

• Kansas.  Kansas governor has declared a state of emergency after an apparent tornado struck Harveyville (Wabaunsee County, southwest of Topeka).
  • At least 10 people have been injured, 4 of them criticall.
  • More than 40 percent of the town has been damaged.
  • Numerous trees and power lines were down.
  • The weather system was headed to Kentucky and Tennessee, said NWS.
• Indiana.   TORNADO REPORTED BY STATE TROOPER NEAR THE COMMUNITY OF NEWBURGH. WIDESPREAD DAMAGE THROUGHOUT THE CITY PROPER. RESCUE TEAMS ARE RESPONDING. (Source: SPC)

Southern U.S. Wintertime Tornado Outbreak

Several damage surveys were completed today in the wake of a tornado outbreak in Arkansas, Mississippi and Alabama last night. Most of the damage surveyed so far has been rated EF-2 on the Enhanced Fujita scale, indicating considerable damage with wind speeds reaching between 111 and 135 mph. However, the tornado that passed through Clay, Alabama, which is just north of Birmingham has been rated an EF-3. This tornado produced significant damage and was capable of wind speeds between 136 and 165 mph. (Source: NWS)

• The Storm Prediction Center received 23 tornado reports, 118 high wind reports and 35 large hail reports from Sunday’s outbreak:
• Arkansas: 10 tornado reports
• Alabama: 9

  • NWS STORM SURVEY DETERMINES AN EF-2 TORNADO WITH MAX EST WINDS OF 120 MPH CAUSED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE IN EXTREME NE BOLIVAR COUNTY. PATH LENGTH 3.75 MI. (NWS)
• Tennessee: 1
• Kentucky: 1
  • TORNADO BEGAN AT HAZEL KY TO NEW PROVIDENCE KY. 100 YRDS WIDE AND 5.6 MILES LONG. PK WND 95MPH. PROPERTY DAMAGE 50K. HUNDREDS OF TREES UPROOTED/SNAPPED. HOUSE WITH SHIN. (NWS)
• Georgia: 2 tornadoes struck Macon and Dooly Counties Saturday, NWS said.

Tornadoes have destroyed or damaged about 500 homes throughout the region and uprooted/snapped thousands of trees.

Other Global Disasters

• Papua New Guinea (PNG). A massive landslide has completely buried two villages in PNG.
  • “The landslide is about a kilometer long and about 300 meters wide. There are people buried underneath and a number of them are from what I have heard, children.” Local MP Francis Potape has told Radio Australia.
  • At least 40 people are reportedly missing, reports said.
  • The landslide occurred near Exxon-Mobil’s liquefied natural gas project in the new Hela Province, blocking the main road and stopping work at the site and a nearby airfield.

A line of strong storms swept across the Southeast spawning deadly tornadoes.

• US Southeast.  A line of strong storms swept across the Southeast spawning deadly tornadoes.
  • At least 21 tornadoes were reported in Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi and Alabama, SPC said.
  • Twisters have killed at least 4 people in Alabama, destroying or damaging dozens of buildings, trapping residents in their homes and felling trees and power lines.
  • The storms also brought hail and damaging winds to the region.
  • Winds of up to 70mph struck both Memphis and Little Rock areas causing damage to building, and funnel clouds were spotted near Little Rock, NWS reported.
  • SPC received a total 173 reports of tornadoes, strong winds and hail, as of posting.

• Arkansas:
  • Dallas County -2 HOUSES DAMAGED ON HIGHWAY 8 NORTHWEST OF FORDYCE. NO INJURIES REPORTED AT THIS TIME.
• Alabama:
  • At least 4 people were killed and scores of others injured as storms pummeled Jefferson County, causing “significant damage.”
    
  • Chilton County – MAJOR STRUCTUAL DAMAGE REPORTED IN MAPLESVILLE WITH PEOPLE TRAPPED IN HOMES
  • Jefferson County – MAJOR STUCTURAL DAMAGE REPORTED NEAR THE 500 BLOCK OF U.S. HIGHWAY 31 IN FULTONDALE.
  • ST Clair County – MAJOR STRUCTUAL DAMAGE REPORTED ON OLD SPRINGVILLE ROAD. INJURIES UNKNOWN AT THIS TIME
  • Jefferson County – MAJOR STRUCTURAL DAMAGE REPORTED IN TRUSSVILLE WITH MULTIPLE TREES DOWNED.
  • Jefferson County – TREES DOWN AND DAMAGE TO HOMES NEAR BALBOA COURT.
  • Jefferson County – SEVERAL HOMES DESTROYED IN THE PARADISE VALLEY AREA IN CLAY. TIME ESTIMATED FROM RADAR.
  • Jefferson County – PAWNEE VILLAGE ROAD COMPLETELY IMPASSIBLE IN TARRANT.

Other Global Disasters

• Fiji.  About a 1,000 people have been evacuated amid severe flooding in Fiji.
  • The worst affected areas are the northern island of Vanua Levu, and parts of Viti Levu, the largest of Fiji islands and where the capital Suva is located.
  • “In Labasa most of the crops were damaged due to the flooding, they also experienced some strong winds. We have heard that a lot of families have moved to the evacuation centres. Most of the roads were flooded yesterday in Vanua Levu and Vitu Levu as well today. Some of the bridges were damaged, especially in Vanua Levu. And we have just received a report that the river level in Nadi town is rising,” a local meteorologist said.
  • The Fiji Meteorological Service forecast heavy rain to continue over much of Fiji until Wednesday, causing more flooding in low-lying areas throughout the country, a report said.
  • “People living along coastal areas that have been flooded will have to be very careful. During the high tide in the evening, water levels will rise. It they need assistance they should contact the authorities available. If they should move, I suggest they start moving now because the next high tide will be at 6 in the morning. Now both times for these high tides occur in the dark and it will be dangerous if they don’t start moving now.”

Deadly Tornadoes Strike Southeastern U.S.

Tornadoes wreak havoc across the Southeast, leaving 5 dead and many injured

A strong storm system moved across southeastern US spawning 16 reported tornadoes, killing at least 5 and injuring many more. Dozens of homes and buildings were left damaged across 7 states.

Disaster Calendar 2011 – November 17

At least 16 tornado reports were reported to SPC, as of posting.

• North Carolina. At least one person died when tornadoes touched down in NC, Gov. Bev Perdue said.
• “We have reports that tornadoes touched down in Randolph and Davidson counties [Wednesday] evening, causing a fatality in Davidson,” she said.
• About a dozen people were injured and at least 3 dozen structures were damaged in the area.
• Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Several EF 2 tornadoes reportedly touched down injuring 15 people across several counties, with Jones County being the worst-hit.
• South Carolina. At least 3 people were killed and up to a dozen others  injured when a tornado swept through a rural community about 20 miles south of Charlotte, N.C.
• Georgia. At least one person was killed when a tree fell on a sport utility vehicle, a report said.
• Alabama. “In eastern Alabama, a suspected twister splintered trees and demolished mobile homes at a pair of housing parks near the Auburn University campus,” the report said.
• Tens of thousands of customers were left without power in Montgomery, the state capital.
• Louisiana. A suspected tornado swept through Houma, southern Louisiana damaging several homes.
• Pittsylvania, Virginia. Strong winds caused extensive roof damage to several building including the building housing the Unique Industries, according to reports received by SPC.
• Dozens of trees were uprooted or splintered.
• Numerous tractor trailers were  blown over.
• Water tanks were tossed about.

43 Tornadoes Reported in 5 States

Tornadoes move across North Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa and Texas

The strongest tornadoes touched down in Graham and Norton counties (about 10 miles north of Hill City), Kansas, the National Weather Service (NWS) reported.

NWS conducted a storm damage survey and has preliminarily rated one of the tornadoes as an EF3 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale.

Deadliest Ever Tornadoes?

Confirmed Death Toll 302; Unconfirmed 318

The Late April Tornado Attack:  The worst U.S. natural disaster since Hurricane Katrina

Hurricane Katrina claimed an estimated 1,800 lives in 2005; current unconfirmed reports put this week’s toll from tornadoes and storms at at least 318.

Wednesday also turned out to be the deadliest day of tornadoes in the U.S. since April 3, 1974 when 310 people perished.

Georgia: 16 (Ringgold has 7 tornado deaths: Bradley County 9)

Total: 302 (as of posting)

Up to 2 thousand others have been injured in storm-related incidents.

The Dark Wednesday

The Dark Wednesday: SPC received 180 tornado reports and a 584 other severe weather reports.

The tornadoes and violent storms that ripped through 7 states left  “major, major” trails of destruction in their pathes.

Entire civic infrastructures were wiped out as tornadoes and storms leveled entire neighborhoods in various parts of the South, obliterating homes, businesses, schools, hospitals, churches…

There are no official reports of the dimension of destruction as yet; however, FIRE-EARTH estimates that up to 6 thousands structures may have been razed/damaged, with an estimated loss of about 10 billion dollars.

Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee and Virginia have declared states of emergency.

Forecast: Large-scale Lightning Outbreaks

Unfortunately, the worst may NOT be over yet.  In addition to more tornadoes and violent storms this year and the next, FIRE-EARTH forecasts phenomenally large-scale outbreaks of potentially deadly lightning clusters throughout the United States.

Tornadoes, storms tear across Midwest and South

34 tornadoes rip through vast area from Oklahoma to Ohio

SPC received reports of 34 tornado sightings, 541 storms including 20 with winds of greater than 65 knots (120+km/h), and 355 hail reports, including 20 reports of the stones measuring 2+inches (5+cm) in diameter between Tuesday evening and Wednesday Morning.

Fatalities: None reported as of posting
Damage: About 2 dozen homes destroyed in Mid and W. Tennessee (NO reported touchdowns as of posting)
Power Outages: Storms knocked out power to tens of thousands of homes and businesses across Tennessee.
Snowfall: 7 to nearly 10 inches for in parts of southeast Minnesota, Green Bay, Wisconsin, and various areas in Michigan

Weather Forecast for Wednesday Evening/ Thursday

Possible severe storms across “parts of the Lower Mississippi Valley, the Southern Plains, the Southeast and the Mid-Atlantic” starting Wednesday evening, with large hail, heavy rains and 60MPH winds forecast for the areas.

“… areas of the South and East, the south-central Plains and the Midwest at Slight Risk of severe weather development through the rest of the week.” NWS reported.
