‘Strong’ Quake a Prelude to Major Seismotectonic Activity?

Posted by feww on November 1, 2015

M5.4 quake strikes near Waiouru, New Zealand

Centered at 39.40S, 175.95E (about 60km S. of Lake Taupo), the quake occurred at a depth of 38km, said NZ’s geonet.

The event occurred about 60km S. of Lake Taupo, and 30km SW of Ruapehu at 05:42:11UTC on November 1 2015.

Lake Taupo lies in the caldera of the Taupo Super Volcano. With a surface area of 620 km, it is the largest lake by surface area in New Zealand.

Taupo has produced two of the world’s most violent eruptions in recent geological times including the most recent major explosion, the Hatepe eruption, which occurred about 1,800 years ago. It was the most violent eruption in the world over the last 5 millennia, and NZ’s worst in 27 millennia.

The explosion, a VEI-7 eruption, ejected more than 120 km³ of tephra, a quarter of which was ejected almost instantaneously. The ash from the eruption is said to have turned the sky red over China and Rome.

Hikurangi Trench, located east of the region where the quake occurred, is subject to high rates of convergence between the Australia and Pacific plates, making it as one of the most seismically active areas in the world.

“One-in-100-year” storm inundates Christchurch, New Zealand

Hundreds of homes have been flooded in Christchurch, New Zealand, after a storm “quickly escalated” battering the city with hurricane-force blasts and extreme rains.

Residents have been warned of health risks from contaminated floodwaters that have inundated homes, businesses and streets, while the storm was graded as a one-in-100-year event, said the city mayor.

“This was a significant, escalating event that moved very quickly from a one-in-five-year event to a one-in-100-year event,” she said.

“The weather forecasts did not predict an event of this gravity.” [The weather forecasters were caught by surprise. Editor]

Severe Storm Hits NZ Capital, Wellington

Wellington’s south coast was pounded by near-hurricane force winds and massive waves Tuesday evening.

A resident of Island Bay described  the assault of high tide mixed with strong wind last night as being like ”a bomb” going off.

“By about 10pm, debris, logs, and a large chunk of concrete were strewn across the road, which was also badly hit in the June storm.”

Tectonic Summary

The January 20, 2014 M6.2 earthquake northeast of Masterton in the North Island of New Zealand is located approximately 115 km northeast of Wellington. The earthquake resulted from northeast-southwest oriented normal faulting 175 km to the west of the Hikurangi Trench, where the Pacific plate subducts westward beneath the North Island. At the latitude of this event, the Pacific plate moves towards the west-southwest with respect to the Australia plate at a rate of approximately 42 mm/yr. The faulting character, location and depth of this earthquake indicate it is an intraplate event either within Australia plate crust above the subducting Pacific plate, or within the interior of subducted Pacific slab, rather than a plate boundary event on the subduction zone thrust interface.

New Zealand experiences fairly frequent moderate-sized earthquakes; the region within 200 km of the January 20, 2014 event has experienced 35 earthquakes of M 5.5 or larger over the past century. The 2014 event is just a few kilometers to the east of a M 7.3 earthquake in March of 1934, and approximately 40 km southwest of two M6.2 and 6.4 earthquakes near Dannevirke in March and May of 1990, respectively. The 1990 events did not cause significant damage or fatalities. —USGS/EHP

The earthquake was felt strongly in NZ Parliament, said a political commentator.

“You could see the floor of the house wobbling and you could see all the fences around shaking and all the windows were shaking.” A Blenheim resident said.

“Its way bigger, hugely bigger, like with the other one because we had heaps of after shocks with the other one they were just not anything to kind of panic about.”

A Nelson resident told NewstalkZB she could hear the “violent” earthquake coming just before it struck.

“Last time it threw us around, the last earthquake, but you could hear this one coming. It was big, and really noisy.”

Our advice to YOU and all intelligent people in Wellington area
1. There’s a frighteningly large buildup of tectonic stress energy right under your feet.
2. RUN while you’re still alive, before the next exodus bottleneck makes it impossible to flee the danger zone.
