Massive Toxic Waste Water Leak into Floridan Aquifer Confirmed
Up to five billion liters of contaminated water have leaked into Floridan aquifer, according to our sources.
The leak occurred after a massive sinkhole–at least 15m in diameter–opened up beneath a tailing pond containing waste material called “gypsum stack” at Mosaic’s New Wales facility in the town of Mulberry near Tampa on August 27, 2016.
Mosaic is the world’s largest phosphate supplier.
The toxic water contained unknown quantities of mildly radioactive phosphogypsum, a by-product from the production of fertilizer.
The Floridan aquifer: Measuring about 275,000 km², the Floridan (artesian) aquifer extends into Florida, southern Alabama, southeastern Georgia, and southern S. Carolina. It supplies the cities of Daytona Beach, Deltona, Flagler Beach, Gainesville, Tampa, Jacksonville, Ocala, Orlando, St. Petersburg, and Tallahassee, multiple municipalities in South Florida, and numerous rural communities across The Sunshine State. It also supplies the cities of Savannah and Brunswick in Georgia.
