Deadly Earthquake Rocks Osaka, Japan

Osaka Rattled by M5.9 Earthquake

Magnitude: 5.9 [JMA]
Location: 4.8°N, 135.6°E [Osaka-fu Hokubu]
Depth: 10km
Time: 07:58 JST (UTC + 9:00 hrs) 18 Jun 2018

The quake measured six-minus on Japan’s seismic intensity scale of zero to seven. The event was felt throughout S. Honshu affecting Hyogo, Kyoto, Nara and Shiga prefectures.

  • At least three people have been killed and six others injured as of 09:30 JST, officials said.
  • EQ initially reported as M6.3, occurring about 1km NW of Ibaraki City, Japan.
  • Blackouts reported in wide areas.
  • Officials are warning residents in western Japan to watch out for another “big earthquake” in the next few days.
  • At least a dozen aftershocks have occurred as of 11:00 JST [many more expected.]
  • Significant damage to multiple structures reported.

Japan’s NPPs

So far no problem detected at 15 nuclear reactors in Fukui Prefecture including and 5 offline reactors, located north of the epicenter of the earthquake.

A reactor at the Takahama nuclear power plant and 2 others at the Ohi plant continue to operate.

For now, radiation levels remain unchanged around the NPPs in Ishikawa, Shizuoka and Shimane prefectures, which are located farther from the quake’s epicenter, Japan’s nuclear regulator said.
