  • The quake has been designated “yellow” alert, with multiple fatalities expected, by USGS. [“Yellow alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. Some casualties and damage are possible and the impact should be relatively localized. Past yellow alerts have required a local or regional level response.”]
  • Shaking assessed as “Severe .”
  • At least one significant aftershock measuring 5.3mww has occurred as of this report.

Heat Dome Broils Middle East

City of Bandar Mahshahr in Iran registered a heat index of 74°C (165.2°F) on Friday. The actual air temperature reached a high of 46.1°C, with a dew point temperature of 32°C at 4.30pm local time. [Ref. B. McNoldy, Uni of Miami]

Meanwhile, the heat index in the Iraqi capital Baghdad reached a high of 52°C on Thursday.

The highest heat index ever recorded was 81.1°C (178°F) in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, reached on July 8, 2003.

Hundreds Injured after Strong Earthquake in Iran

M6.2 Quake Strikes Western Iran

 Centered at 32.739°N, 47.670°E the quake occurred at a depth of about 10.0km (6.2mi), said USGS/EHP.

The mainshock was preceded by a M5.0 foreshock, and followed by at least 8 significant aftershocks, the largest of which measured 5.8Mw as of posting.

The quakes struck western Iran, near the border with Iraq. Induced seismicity cannot be ruled out.

The quake has injured hundreds of people and caused extensive damage to buildings in the nearby town of Mour-Mouri, said news agencies quoting local media.
