The disease which is causing kidney failure has killed so many men in western Nicaragua’s sugarcane-growing community of La Isla [The Island] the locals call their village La Isla de las Viudas—”The Island of the Widows.”

• Central America. A mysterious killer epidemic is sweeping across Central America, killing more men in Nicaragua than HIV and diabetes combined. In El Salvador, the disease is the 2nd biggest cause of death among the male population, said a report.
• The epidemic is now prevalent across six countries, along the Pacific coast of Central America.
• The following figures show the percentage increase in male deaths caused by kidney disease in Central America between 2005 and 2009:
• Guatemala: 27%
• El Salvador: 26%
• Nicaragua: 41%
• Costa Rica: 16%
• “It is important that the chronic kidney disease (CKD) afflicting thousands of rural workers in Central America be recognized as what it is – a major epidemic with a tremendous population impact,” said Victor Penchaszadeh, a clinical epidemiologist at Columbia University, and a consultant to the Pan-American Health Organization on chronic diseases in Latin America.
• El Salvador’s health minister has asked the international community for help. The epidemic is  “wasting away our populations,” she said.
• The worst aspect of the disease is the suddenness by which it claims its victims. The disease victims show no sign of high blood pressure or diabetes, which are the most common causes of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in the “developed world.”
• “Most of the men we studied have CKD from unknown causes,” said Dr. Carlos Orantes, who recently discovered that a quarter of the men in the farming region of Bajo Lempa in El Salvador are afflicted with CKD.
• Dr. Orantes believes that exposure to toxic chemicals—pesticides and herbicides—is a major cause of the CKD in his area.

Raging floods in Kenya have caused massive destruction of infrastructure, leaving at least 24 people dead and more than 100,000 displaced.

• Kenya. Raging floods in Kenya have caused massive destruction of infrastructure, leaving at least 24 people dead and more than 100,000 displaced.
• “The displaced have challenges of sanitation facilities and are also using raw water from the open, a situation that has put their health at risk. They have also lost almost all their crops, some of which were almost mature, after their farms were submerged under floodwaters,” said a report.
• Tanzania. Extreme rains in Arusha, Kilimanjaro, and Mbeya have left at least a dozen people dead and up to 10,000 homeless.
• Strong winds and  extreme rains, which have triggered severe flooding and landslides, have destroyed hundreds of homes, as well as roads, bridges and other infrastructure.
• Torrents of mud and debris unleashed by extreme rains have buried hundred of hectares of crops including rice, maize, sunflower and sorghum.
• The floods occurred just three weeks after similar havoc last month, a report said.
• Mexico. A state of emergency was declared in 71 municipalities in the Mexican States of Durango, Zacatecas and Veracruz after freezing temperatures left at least a dozen people dead.
• Chile. Jorge Montt glacier (surface area: ~450 km²), a tidewater glacier located south of the town of Caleta Tortel in Chile’s Aisén Region, is melting at an average rate of about 2.74 meter per day (about 1 km per year), researchers say.

New York counties designated multiple Agricultural Disaster Areas

USDA has issued four separate disaster declarations for the state of New York because of the crop damage caused by drought and excessive heat, excessive heat and rain, excessive rain, flooding, flash flooding, hail, high winds, below normal temperatures and tornadoes, hurricanes (Irene) and severe storms (TS Lee).

• New York, USA. Disaster Declaration No 2: USDA has designated 34 counties in New York as agricultural disaster areas due to the combined effects of excessive rain, flooding, flash flooding, hail, high winds, below normal temperatures and tornadoes that occurred April 1 – Aug. 30, 2011.

• New York, USA. Disaster Declaration No 3:  Six New York counties have been designated as a Agricultural Natural Disaster Areas by USDA due to excessive heat and rain that occurred July 10 – Aug. 25, 2011.
• PDA Disaster areas: Orange County.
• Contiguous Disaster areas:  Dutchess, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan and Ulster counties.

The following counties in the bordering states of New Jersey and Pennsylvania were also declared as disaster areas because they are contiguous.

• New Jersey: Passaic and Sussex counties.
• Pennsylvania: Pike County.

• New York, USA. Disaster Declaration No 4: USDA has declared 12  counties in New York as agricultural disaster areas due to losses caused by drought and excessive heat that occurred July 1 – Aug. 31, 2011.
• Six counties designated as primary disaster areas are Ontario, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben,Wayne and Yates.
• The other six counties declared as contiguous disaster areas are Allegany, Cayuga, Chemung, Livingston, Monroe and Tompkins.

The following counties in the bordering state of Pennsylvania were also added to the disaster declaration because they are contiguous.

• Pennsylvania: Potter and Tioga counties.

Other Disasters

• Minnesota, USA. USDA has designated 15 counties in Minnesota as Agricultural Natural Disaster Areas due to losses caused by the combined effects of excessive rain, excessive heat, high winds, tornadoes and an early fall frost that occurred April 1 – Sept. 15, 2011.
• The counties designated as Primary Disaster areas are Kandiyohi, Lincoln and McLeod.
• Minnesota counties designated as Contiguous Disaster areas are Carver, Chippewa, Lyon, Meeker, Pipestone, Pope, Renville, Sibley, Stearns, Swift, Wright, Yellow and Medi.

The following counties in South Dakota were also declared natural disaster areas because they are contiguous.

• South Dakota: Brookings, Deuel and Moody counties.

Monster Storm Emergency Declared

• Alaska, USA. The city of Nome in Northwest Alaska has declared a disaster following a Bering Sea storm considered the worst in at least four decades.
• The extent of damage caused by strong winds and flooding is said to be  “beyond the capability” of municipal resources that are allocated to storm response and recovery, a report said.

• Fukushima, Japan. A number of colleagues who recently visited Fukushima, Japan have confirmed that the native fauna including birds, bees, the ubiquitous cicadas and crickets, and all other summer insects normally found in abundance throughout the Japan Region, have all but disappeared from a vast area surrounding the Fukushima Dai-Ich Nuclear Power Plant.
•  In a move reminiscent of the war atrocities committed by the old, evil empire against own nationals, Japanese government is coercing electricians throughout the country to “volunteer” for work at the crippled Fukushima Dai-Ich NPP, informed sources say.  They are told, “if you consider yourself Japanese, then you must do your bit for the country by working at the nuclear plant,” or words to that effect.
• Each technician is expected to work 3 to 4 hours a day for about 4 weeks before the accumulated levels of radiation exposure would exceed the “danger limits.”
• Time and time again, the Japanese elite have demonstrated that they are incapable of running their national affairs without hurting own subjects, or harming people in other countries.
• Sindh Province, Pakistan. The government has declared southern Pakistani province of Sindh a disaster area following widespread flooding caused by monsoon rains. About 150 villages have so far been inundated seriously affecting at least a quarter of a million people, reports said.
• Louisiana, USA.The St. Tammany Parish has declared a State of Emergency following large scale fish kill in the Pearl River Basin, a report said. The authorities have discovered “tens of thousands of dead fish and other river animals” in a section of the river that covers St. Tammany and Washington parishes and part of neighboring Mississippi.
• “The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals is advising residents not to swim, wade, fish or come in contact with waterways in the Pearl River watershed, including its tributaries.”

Disaster Calendar 2011 – August 14 Entry

• Sindh Province, Pakistan. The authorities have declared Badin district in Sindh Province, Pakistan a disaster area after torrential rains inundated at least 1,500 villages, destroying homes and crops and displacing more than 40,000 people, reports said.
• City of Badin reportedly received 475mm (187 inches) of rain in about 36 hours.
• Flooding has also killed an undisclosed number of people and livestock.
• Ohio, USA. Port Clinton has  declared a  state of emergency after wide spread flooding inundated the city.
• Texas, USA. Crop and livestock losses in Texas may have already exceeded $10 billion dollars, FIRE-EARTH estimates. State’s previous record losses were  $4.1 billion set in 2006.
• Guizhou Province, China. At least 2.15 million people in 84 province’s cities and counties of SW Guizhou Province are short of drinking water, according to an official statement.
• “The drought has also affected 1.05 million hectares of crops and left 760,000 livestock short of drinking water, causing direct economic losses of more than 6 billion yuan (923 million U.S. dollars).”
• Hunan Province, China. Deepening drought in the city of Huaihua, central China’s Hunan Province, has left about 400,000 people and 110,000 livestock short of drinking water, a report said.
• “The dry weather, due to lack of rainfall, had withered up 140,000 hectares of crops and dried up more than 1,200 wells, said a spokesman with the Huaihua Municipal Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters on Friday.”
• “Drought has caused major problems for boats that use the Xiangjiang River in Hunan Province. Almost 170 vessels have been held up at the Zhuzhou section in the river’s upper reaches. Authorities are dredging a channel to allow river traffic to resume. Water levels have dropped to under 30 meters this year, eight meters lower than previous highs.”

• Alabama, USA. Death toll from April 27 Tuscaloosa tornado has climbed to at least 50, a report said.
• Nebraska, USA.  A second disaster declaration has been issued for the state of Nebraska following  flooding from May 24 to August 1, reports said. [For details of Nebraska’s first disaster declaration see August 12 entry.]
• Colorado, USA. Agriculture Secretary has declared 3 counties in the state of Colorado as natural disaster areas. The freezing temperatures from April 26 through May 3, 2011 caused severe damage to crops, especially apples and stone fruit.  The three disaster areas are Delta, Mesa and Montrose counties. Additionally,  Garfield, Gunnison, Ouray, Pitkin and San Miguel counties as well as Grand and San Juan counties in Utah were declared disaster areas because they are contiguous.

• Utah, USA. The White House has declared a major disaster exists in the State of Utah due to the flooding during the period of April 18 to July 16, 2011.
• Illinois, USA.  Carroll, Jo Daviess and Stephenson counties have been declared disaster areas following severe flash flooding that occurred on July 27.
  
• “Flash floods throughout Northwest Illinois swept away roads, damaged bridges and inundated hundreds of homes,” said  Governor Pat Quinn.
• “At least four of our citizens lost their lives to the second ‘hundred year flood’ in as many years. The three inches we received in Pecatonica was a pittance compared to the 15 inches received in East Dubuque in 11 hours where 300 citizens had to be evacuated, many by boat. The flood gates were closed in Galena saving much, but significant damage still occurred. I arrived in Pearl City Thursday afternoon while the water was rising and I was the last vehicle to get out of town heading to Freeport as President Knoup closed the road.”

• Texas, USA. The state of Texas has broken the record for the driest 12 months on record as of July 2011. Only 0.72 inches of rain fell in the state during the entire month of July.
• Texas State Climatologist Nielsen-Gammon: “These statistics rank the current drought as the most severe one-year drought ever for Texas.”
• “Never before has so little rain been recorded prior to and during the primary growing season for crops, plants and warm-season grasses.” He added.
• Texas Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples: “The extreme heat and unprecedented dry weather are crippling agricultural operations in Texas upon which all Americans rely for food, fuel, clothing and other daily necessities.”
• “This historic drought has depleted water resources, leaving our state’s farmers and ranchers in a state of dire need. The damage to our economy is already measured in billions of dollars and continues to mount.” He added.
• The small town of Kemp (Pop: 1,500) ran out of water on Sunday, the town mayor said. Kemp is located on the shore of Cedar Creek Reservoir in Kaufman County about 40 miles southeast of Dallas.
• Dallas experienced triple digit temperatures for the 39th consecutive day.

• China. Death toll from heavy rain, flooding and landslides in central and southern china has climbed to at least 100, with about 80 others reported missing, reports said. The extreme weather events have affected up to 10 million people in 13 provinces, destroying about half million hectares of crops.

• NY, USA. The WH has declared 21 upstate New York counties as disaster areas because of the damage caused by storms, flooding and tornadoes from April 26 to May 8.  The declaration covers the following counties: Allegany, Broome, Chemung, Chenango, Clinton, Delaware, Essex, Franklin, Hamilton, Herkimer, Lewis, Madison, Niagara, Oneida, Onondaga, Ontario, Steuben, Tioga, Ulster, Warren, and Yates.

• North Dakota, USA. A presidential disaster declaration has been issued for major portions of North Dakota including a  total of 42 counties, the Spirit Lake Nation, the Three Affiliated Tribes and the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa reservations. Counties covered by the declaration included Barnes, Benson, Billings, Bottineau, Burke, Burleigh, Cass, Cavalier, Dickey, Divide, Eddy, Foster, Grand Forks, Grant, Griggs, Kidder, LaMoure, Logan, McHenry, McIntosh, McLean, Mercer, Morton, Mountrail, Nelson, Pembina, Pierce, Ramsey, Ransom, Renville, Richland, Rolette, Sargent, Sheridan, Steele, Stutsman, Towner, Traill, Walsh, Ward, Wells and Williams.

• South Dakota, USA. Yankton county has been added to SD flooding federal disaster list, which already included Aurora, Beadle, Brookings, Brown, Buffalo, Clark, Codington, Day, Edmunds, Faulk, Grant, Hamlin, Hand, Hughes, Hyde, Jackson, Jerauld, Kingsbury, Lake, Marshall, Miner, Moody, Perkins, Potter, Roberts, Sanborn, Spink Stanley Sully and Union counties.

• China. Some 103 children aged 14 or younger have been seriously poisoned and hundreds of others sickened from lead pollution in eastern china, a report said. The victims were found to have every high levels of lead contamination in their blood.

• England. “Parts of the East Anglia region in eastern England have been declared to be in a state of drought after some areas of the country had their driest spring on record, the British government said on Friday.”
• “Drought has hit parts of East Anglia, with other areas in England and Wales also giving grounds for concern,” Environment Secretary said.
• China. Severe rain in China has triggered widespread floods and landslides in central and eastern regions of the country since Thursday, killing at least 44 people and leaving 33 others missing in three provinces of Jiangxi, Hubei and Hunan, a report said.
• “Flood waters measured more than 2 meters deep in Tongcheng’s low-lying areas. Traffic in the county seat was paralyzed, as flood waters in the area measured between 60 to 90 cm deep.”
• Guizhou, China. Severe flooding in Guizhou since Tuesday has killed at least 21 people and left 32 others missing, forcing about 100,000 people to abandon their homes, a report said.
