Worst drought in half a century destroying dozens of communities in NE Brazil

Nearly two years of drought has caused unprecedented die-offs of herds running out of food.

“We are experiencing the worst drought in 50 years, with consequences that could be compared to a violent earthquake,” said the agriculture secretary in the northeastern state of Bahia.

drought has hurt corn and cotton crops, left herds of cattle and other farm animals to starve to death in dry pastures and wiped about 30 percent off regional sugar cane production, or 10 percent of Brazil’s cane output, said a report.

Drought is affecting tens of millions of people living in the semi-arid tropical region which includes all or parts of half of Brazil’s 26 states.

“Locals have even started to fight over water supplies, igniting conflicts referred to as ‘water wars.’ An average of one person per day has been killed in these conflicts across the region.”
