Deadly earthquake: Clearer picture of death and destruction emerging

Background: A magnitude 7.5Mw earthquake struck northern Afghanistan on October 26, killing hundreds of people, leaving more than 2,000 others injured, and damaging or destroying about 120,000 homes in Pakistan, Afghanistan and India.

The deadly quake was centered at 36.441°N 70.717°E, about 254km NNE of Kabul, striking at a depth a depth of 212.5 km, USGS/EHP reported.

Casualties by country

Pakistan: 28o dead; 1,982 injured
Afghanistan: 115 dead; 538 injured
India: 4 dead; 20 injured
Tajikistan: No reported death; 14 injured
Total: 399 dead;  2,554 injured, as of posting.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), the worst affected area, 31 percent of the fatalities were women and 38 per cent children, OCHA quoted the officials as saying.

Hundreds of casualties were also reported in Federally Administered Tribal Area (FATA), Pakistan Administered Kashmir/Gilgit Baltistan, and Punjab, said the report.

Floodwaters Threaten Pakistan’s Sindh Province with Large-Scale Devastation

Having caused  major catastrophes in Punjab and Kashmir, rising floodwaters could caused  large-scale devastations in Pakistan’s Sindh Province.

In Punjab province alone flooding affected more than 2.2 million people, killing at least 209 and leaving 4,286 others injured, said the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

Some 2,853 villages were severely inundated and 32,243 houses were damaged or destroyed, NDMA reported.

Authorities rescued 41,115 persons, while 200,000 people were displaced.

Kashmir Mega Catastrophe

Meanwhile at least 75,000 people are still awaiting evacuation in partly submerged homes in Srinagar, Kashmir’s capital city, “where roads have been transformed into stagnant canals strewn with sewage, wreckage and dead livestock,” reported Reuters.

“Floating carcasses have become a big source of worry with most houses still waterlogged. We are struggling to get in touch with government health officials,” said a concerned hotelier in Kashmir.

People are worried that hectares of stagnant water covering the city would increase the risk of waterborne diseases spreading.

“The stench of rotting carcasses of cattle was almost unbearable for people in some parts of Srinagar, a city of more than a million people,” said the report.

Flooding and landslides have claimed hundreds of lives left tens of thousands homeless in Indian-administered Kashmir, where the cost of flood damage could top several billion dollars.

Extreme Rain Events flood more than two-thirds of Croatia

EREs have triggered severe flooding inundating about two-thirds Croatia, Reuters quoted the national rescue agency DUZS as saying,

“The biggest threat is in flooded areas around the central towns of Sisak, Hrvatska Kostajnica and Karlovac. Several villages have been evacuated and a state of emergency has been declared in the northern municipality of Nedelisce.”

Wildfires Threaten Hundreds of Homes in California

Madera County – Courtney Fire.  More than 400 Structures with approximately 1,000 residents living in the Northern part of Oakhurst  and a section of Bass Lake near Road 222 have been evacuated, reported CalFire. The fire has destroyed at least a dozen buildings, as of posting.

El Dorado County – King Fire. The King Fire is located in the canyon of the South Fork of the American River northeast of the community of Pollock Pines. Fire is currently traveling to the east/northeast with a rapid rate of spread, said CalFire.

500 Homes remain threatened. Mandatory evacuations are in place for the following areas: Estates at Forebay Road between King of the Mountain Road and Pony Express Trail, as well as all of Whites Meadows Road.

Voluntary Evacuation Advisories are in place for more than 400 homes  located west of Forebay Road from Blair Road to Pony Express Trail. Additional Voluntary Evacuation Advisories are in place for Badger Hill Road, Marmot Road, Lucky Mine Road, Old Blair Mill Road, Apple Creek Ct, Applemont Ranch, Chickaree Lane, Longs Creek, Quick Silver Road, Quick Silver Ct, and Baltimore Road.

Major Disaster Declared in Hawaii

The White House has declared a major disaster exists in the State of Hawaii in the area affected by Tropical Storm ISELLE  during the period of August 7-9, 2014.

Tropical Storm ISELLE caused significant damage in the counties of Hawaii and Maui.

On September 5, the Hawai‘i County Mayor signed a state of emergency proclamation lava flow in the Wao Kele O Puna area extended to less than 1.5km from the edge of the Ka‘ohe Homesteads subdivision, said the mayor’s office.

Major Disaster Declared in California

The White House has declared a major disaster exists in the State of California in the area affected by an earthquake during the period of August 24 to September 7, 2014.

The quake caused significant damage in the counties of Napa and Solano.

Major Disaster Declared in Guam

The White House has declared a major disaster exists in the Territory of Guam in the area affected by Tropical Storm HALONG during the period of July 28-31, 2014.

State of Emergency Declared in Mississippi’s DeSoto County

Gov. Bryant has declared a state of emergency in Mississippi’s DeSoto County after a line of severe storms pounded the northern part of the state and Tennessee, said a report.

Residents at the Savannah Creek Apartments in Southaven, Miss., were evacuated by the U.S. Coast Guard using rafts, the report said.

Up to seven inches of rain fell over a 100-hour period inundating scores of homes and roads Thursday, with the the cities of Southaven and Horn Lake being the worst hit areas.

St. John Parish School Board Declares State of Emergency

The School Board in St. John the Baptist Parish, Louisiana, has declared a state of emergency after a deadly brain-eating amoeba was found in the water supply in August, said a report.

The amoeba is only dangerous if it gets into the nasal cavity, throught which it can reach the brain, according to Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals.

Death Toll Continues to Climb in Pakistan-India Floods

Extreme Rain Events and widespread flooding have killed at least 600 people in Pakistan and India, injuring hundreds more across the two countries, and affecting millions of others.

Meantime, Water levels in north Kashmir continued to rise, causing major concern, said Jammu & Kashmir chief minister on Saturday.

Crops over millions of hectares have been destroyed or damaged.

Death toll tops 500 in Kashmir’s worst flood in half century

Kashmir’s worst flood in 50 years has left about 500 people dead, hundreds of thousands displaced and millions of others severely affected.

More than 2,500 villages and several major cities on both sides of Kashmiri heavily militarized divide have been inundated.

The worst-hit cities include Srinagar, the capital of the Indian State of Jammu and Kashmir, which is almost completely submerged by floodwaters, and city of Jhnag [population: ~ 400,000,] the capital city of Jhang District, in the state of Punjab, Pakistan.

Floodwaters have swept away everything, officials said. Many people have lost their homes and livelihoods.

American Samoa Declared Major Disaster Area

The White House has declared a major disaster exists in the Territory of American Samoa in the areas affected by severe storms, flooding, and landslides during the period of July 29 to August 3, 2014.

Nevada Gov. Declares State Of Emergency due to Destructive Floods

Nevada Gov.  Sandoval has declared a state of emergency after extreme rain events, a combination of monsoon rains  combined with remnants of Tropical Storm Norbert inundated the Southwest earlier this week.

The town of Moapa received nearly 110mm of rain in just two hours, NWS reported. Dozens of homes were also flooded in nearby town of Overton.

Flooding destroyed a 80-km section of a Interstate 15 north of Las vegas and inundated large swathes of Clark County and the Moapa Paiute Reservation.

Hundreds of thousands marooned by floods in India-held Kashmir

Srinagar, the capital of the Indian State of Jammu and Kashmir, is almost completely submerged by floodwaters.

Famous for its gardens, the city of 1.3 million is situated in the Kashmir Valley and lies on the banks of the Jhelum River, a tributary of the mighty Indus.

Floodwaters have also submerged more than 2,500 villages, killing about 500 people, as well as scores of livestock, on both sides of the Kashmiri political divide.

“The situation in Kashmir Valley is still very grim, it is quite critical,” said the police Inspector General of the Jammu region in Jammu and Kashmir state.

“I don’t know how many exactly, but there are many stuck in neck-deep water and need help as soon as possible,” he said.

“The damage is shocking,” said another senior official. “People have been stranded on the rooftops of their homes for the last three days in some parts of Kashmir.”

Meantime, Punjab has declared states of emergency in 21 districts that are directly affected by the floodwaters from river Jhelum, said a report.

Thousands of villages submerged under floodwater

The flooding in Jammu and Kashmir has been declared a “national-level disaster” by the Indian Prime Minister.

Severe flooding and landslides caused by extreme monsoon rains have submerged large swathes of India and Pakistan, killing hundreds of people, injuring hundreds more, and leaving hundreds of thousands of others marooned .

More than 15 million people have been affected, as deadly floods and landslides destroy thousands of homes in both Indian-administered Kashmir, Jammu, states of Orissa and Andhra Pradesh, as well as in Pakistani-administered Kashmir and Punjab.

More than a thousand bridges and hundreds of kilometers of roads lay in ruins. Hundreds of thousands of hectares of crops have also been destroyed across the two countries.
