Deadliest mass shooting in modern American history leaves 59 dead, 515 wounded

The massacre occurred in America’s most predatory city, Las Vegas, portending deadly waves of social seismicity to befall the nation.

A gunman opened fire into a capacity crowd of about 22,000 at an outdoor country music festival from the 32nd floor of a Las Vegas hotel on Sunday night.

The Route 91 Harvest Festival was being held at the Las Vegas Village and Festival Grounds, with the gunman firing from Mandalay Bay casino.

Police identified the shooter as Stephen Paddock, 64, of Mesquite, Nevada. He was found dead in his hotel room.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has designated a total of 13 counties across three states—Idaho, Nevada and Oregon—as crop disaster areas due to damages and losses caused by a recent drought. Those areas are:

  • Idaho.  Ada, Adams, Canyon, Elmore, Gem, Owyhee, Payette, Twin Falls and Washington counties.
  • Nevada. Elko and Humboldt counties.
  • Oregon. Baker and Malheur counties.

Notes:
i. USDA trigger point for a countywide disaster declaration is 30 percent crop loss on one or more crops.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has designated a total of six counties in Oregon, California and Nevada as crop disaster areas due to damages and losses caused by a recent drought. Those areas are:

Oregon. Lake, Klamath, Harney and Deschutes counties.

California. Modoc County.

Nevada. Washoe County

In a separate declaration USDA has also designated Kauai County in Hawaii as a crop disaster area due to drought.

Multiple Crop Disasters Hit Eight U.S. States

Multiple disasters destroy or damage crops in 130 counties across eight states

USDA has designated 29 counties across four states—Nevada, California, Idaho and Oregon—as crop disaster areas due to damages and losses caused by drought that occurred from Jan. 1, 2015, through Dec. 31, 2015. Those counties are:

Nevada. Carson City, Churchill, Douglas, Elko, Esmeralda, Eureka, Humboldt, Lander, Lincoln, Lyon, Mineral, Nye, Pershing, Storey, Washoe and White Pine counties.

California. Alpine, El Dorado, Inyo, Lassen, Modoc, Mono, Nevada, Placer and Sierra counties.

Idaho. Owyhee County.

Oregon. Harney, Lake and Malheur counties.

All counties listed above were designated natural disaster areas on Feb. 17, 2016.

Crop disaster areas due to damages and losses caused by multiple disaster conditions

M4.4 quake strikes 12km S of Reno, Nevada

Centered at 39.429°N, 119.789°W the event occurred at a depth of 9.6km, reported USGS/EHP.

The event was one of a cluster of at least 8 earthquakes to strike the area starting at 06:22:36UTC on Wednesday (2015-12-23).

People reported feeling the earthquake throughout the city, from South Reno to Northwest Reno. The Nevada Seismological Laboratory recorded the epicenter at about 500m north of Steamboat Ditch, and 5km south of  Reno–Tahoe International Airport (west of I-580), said local media.

Crop disasters have  occurred in the following areas:

  • Nevada.  Storey, Lyon, Lincoln, Washoe counties and Carson City.
  • Utah. Beaver, Garfield, Iron, Millard, Piute and Sevier counties.

Earthquake clusters strike Nevada,  California, Alaska, Oklahoma, Hawaii, Puerto Rico

A 4.8-magnitude earthquake, centered at 37.292°N, 114.655°W struck Nevada at a depth of 4.0 km (2.5 mi), USGS/EHP reported.

The quake, originally reported as a magnitude 5.4 event, was followed by dozens of smaller aftershocks, most of them occurring locally with several reported in neighboring states of California and Utah.

Drought destroys or damages crops in 504 counties across 12 states

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has designated a total of 504 countiesiii in 12 states as crop disaster areas due to losses and damages caused by drought.

Those designations are for:

Arizona (20 counties/disaster designations), California (68 disaster designations, which cover ALL of the state’s 58 counties), Colorado (36), Idaho (9), Kansas (54), Nebraska (1), Nevada (28 designations, which cover ALL of the state’s 16 counties and Carson City), New Mexico (27), Oklahoma (77), Oregon (7), Texas (154) and Utah (22).

Crop Disasters 2015

Beginning January 7, 2015 USDA has declared crop disasters in at least 731 countiesiii across 14 states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Virginia and West Virginia.

All of the 2015 disaster designations so far are due to drought.

Crop Disasters 2014

In 2014, USDA declared crop disasters in at least 2,904 counties across 44 states. Most of the designations were due to drought.

Those states were:

Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan. Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Notes:
i. USDA trigger point for a countywide disaster declaration is 30 percent crop loss on at least one crop.

ii. The counties designated as agricultural disaster areas, as listed above, include both primary and contiguous disaster areas.

iii. Some counties may have been designated as crop disaster areas more than once due to multiple disasters.

iv. The U.S. has a total of 3,143 counties and county-equivalents.

v. The disaster designations posted above were approved by USDA on February 4, 2015.

Earthquakes strike north of Bald Mountain, NV

Another swarm of at least 15 earthquakes has rattled northwestern Nevada over the past 24 hours.

The quakes measured between 2.5 and 3.9Mw, reported USGS/EHP.

The two largest events today measured 3.9Mw occurring at depths of 10.2km and 6.8km, said the report.

The latest swarm brings the total number of events in the area to at least 73 over the past 30 days.

The U.S. events include 30 out of 42 earthquakes globally, measuring ≥ 2.5Mw, over the past 24 hours, and three out of six significant earthquakes in 30 days.

Swarm of 24 Earthquakes Hit NW Nevada

At least 24 earthquakes of all sizes have occurred in NW Nevada over the past 24 hours, according to the USGS/EHP.

The swarm included 10 events measuring ≥ 2.5Mw, with the largest shock registering 4.2Mw.

The latest swarm brings the total number of earthquakes measuring ≥ 2.5Mw in the area to 17 over the past seven days and 94 in the past 30 days, as of posting.

The 218th quake strikes northern Nevada

Centered at 41.880°N, 119.636°W the quake occurred at a depth of 11.5km (7.1mi) about 68km ESE of Lakeview, Oregon, reported USGS/EHP.

The quake was the 218th quake measuring ≥ 2.5Mw to strike near Bald Mountain, East of Calcutta Lake, over the past 30 days.

At least 18 quakes of all magnitudes have struck the area over the past 24 hours.

Multiple earthquakes strike 11 states, Puerto Rico and US Virgin Islands

At least 188 earthquakes measuring up to magnitude 4.0Mw have struck 11 states, Puerto Rico and US Virgin Islands  over the past 24 hours.

The largest quake, as of posting, measured 4.0Mw, occurring 2km (1mi) SE of Medford, Oklahoma, according to USGS/EHP.

Earthquakes also struck Alaska, California, Hawaii, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming.

Centered at 37.275°N, 97.616°W, about 52km (32mi) SSW of Wichita, Kansas, the quake occurred at a predictable shallow depth of 2.9km.

Local media have reported structural damage to buildings in Wichita.

Meantime, a magnitude 4.9 quake struck northern Nevada. The area has been rattled by at at least 32 additional shocks, with 17 quakes measuring ≥2.5Mw in the past 24 hours,  bringing the the total number of the quakes measuring  ≥2.5Mw near Bald Mountain to at least 174 since October 23, 2014.

Major Disasters Declared for Arizona, Nevada

The White House has declared federal disasters in Arizona and Nevada due to losses and damage caused by extreme weather and climatic events.

Arizona Major Disasters Caused by Severe Storms and Flooding (DR-4203)

The White House has declared a major disaster exists in the State of Arizona in the area affected by severe storms and flooding during the period of September 7-9, 2014.

The worst affected areas are the counties of La Paz and Maricopa.

Nevada Major Disasters Caused by Severe Storms and Flooding (DR-4202)

The White House has declared a major disaster exists also in the Nevada  in the area affected by severe storms and flooding during the period of September 7-9, 2014.

The worst affected areas are the Moapa Band of Paiutes Reservation.

The Federal Coordinating Officers for federal recovery operations in the affected area across both states said additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the state and warranted by the results of further damage assessments.

Quake cluster continues to strike northern Nevada

Northern Nevada has been rattled by a swarm of at least 129 quakes in the past 7 days, with about 58 of the shocks measuring magnitude 2.5 or greater, according to data provided by USGS/EHP.

The largest quake measured 4.7Mw, striking at a depth of 5.3km north of the Bald Mountain.
