Deadly earthquake destroys homes, displaces thousands in China

A 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck [37.58N, 75.25E; depth of 8.0 km] Kuzigun Village in Taxkorgan County, northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, May 11, 2017 at 5:58 a.m. Thursday (21:00 UTC, Wednesday), said the China Earthquake Networks Center, official Xinhua News reported.

“So far, the quake has left lives of more than 12,000 people affected. A total of 9,200 people have been relocated to safe places. In Quzgun Village, 820 heads of livestock were injured or killed and 1,520 homes collapsed.”

“The average altitude within 5-km around the epicenter is 4,347 meters. The population within a radius of 20 km and 50 km from the epicenter is estimated at 580 and 6,200 respectively.”

Tremors felt in Yunnan’s provincial capital of Kunming

Centered at 24.976°N, 97.865°E, the M5.9 quake  struck at a depth of about 10 km, some 500 km west of the Kunming, provincial capital of Yunnan province.

The quake occurred in Yingjiang County at 9:20 am, reported China Earthquake Networks Center.

“Tremors were strongly felt in the county seat, where local residents rushed to open areas,” reported Xinhua.

A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck the same area last week, injuring at least 13 people and affecting more than 300,000 people in 15 towns, destroying or damaging about 10,000 homes.

In March 2011, a deadly 5.8Mw quake hit Yingjiang County killing dozens of people and leaving hundreds of others injured.

In May 2008, the Wenchuan earthquake killed about 90,000 people and caused billions of dollars in damages.

Earthquake affects more than 68,000 people, leaves 21,000 homeless

A magnitude 5.3 quake struck Yongshan County at a depth of 13 km, at 6:40 a.m. Saturday local time damaging at least 2,731 homes (75 destroyed), affecting more than 68,000, and leaving 21,000 displaced. At least 25 people were injured, authorities said.

The quake also damaged numerous other buildings including 48 schools across six towns, reported Xinhua.

Xiluodu Hydropower Project

Yongshan is home to the Xiluodu hydropower project, China’s second largest hydropower station, only 15 km from the epicenter. Rumors have spread that the quake was caused by the power station,” said the report.

“The area has a history of quakes, [Zhang Jianguo of Yunnan Disaster Prevention Research Institute] said, and quakes caused by reservoirs usually have quite shallow epicenters, at a depth of around 4 km, while the epicenter of Saturday’s quake was 13 km deep.”

At least 75 killed, 400 injured in NW China earthquakes

Magnitude 6.6 quake struck NW China’s Gansu Province killing at least 75 people and  leaving more than 400 others injured, most of them seriously.

At least 30,000 homes have been damaged and as many as 2,000 have collapsed after the earthquakes.

The mainshock, which was reported  as a magnitude 5.9 event by USGS/EHP, was followed by at least one significant aftershock measuring 5.6Mw, as of posting.

Earthquake in China: Up to 208 dead, 11,500 injured, 150,000 displaced, 1.5 million affected

The magnitude 7.0 quake, which struck the mountainous Lushan County of Sichuan Province in SW China on Saturday, has killed up to 208 people (184 bodies recovered, 24 others missing), injured more than 11,500, including about 1,000 serious injuries, left an estimated 150,000 people homeless, and directly affected at least 1.5 million people.

More than 2,300 aftershocks have been recorded in Lushan County as of 4 p.m. Beijing time on Monday, the China Earthquake Administration (CEA) reported; however, only four of the initial shocks were significant, measuring greater than 5.0Mw.

More than 200 major landslides have blocked 57 roads and highways  in 3 areas within the quake damage zone, China’s CCTV reported. The landslides have also severely damaged much of the vegetation in the disaster zone increasing the likelihood of more landslides triggered by rain.

Nigeria fighting: Scores killed, more than 2,000 homes destroyed

Intense fighting between the Nigerian military forces and Boko Haram militants in Baga, northern Nigeria has reportedly killed about 200 people.

  • Much of the town was torched, including some 2,000 homes, causing many of the fatalities. Most of the bodies were charred beyond recognition.
  • “Residents of Baga fled into the bush and only returned on Sunday afternoon to find much of the town destroyed and human and animal corpses strewn through the streets,” said a report.
  • Since 2009, thousands of people have lost their life in the Boko Haram insurgency.

CHINA: Avian Flu Cases Steadily Rising

China confirmed two new cases of human H7N9 avian influenza in Zhejiang Province. The total number of reported infections stand at 104, including 21 deaths, as of 4:00 pm Monday, Beijing time, said a report.

US: City of Grand Rapids Declares a State of Emergency

Rising Grand River has inundated scores of homes in several western Michigan towns and communities, prompting the authorities to declare states of emergency in Grand Rapids and Kent county.

The mayor of small town of Beardstown, has also declared a state of emergency, as Illinois River water levels continued to rise.

Illinois Gov. Quinn has declared 3 additional counties disaster areas from flooding, raising the disaster declaration total  to at least 41 counties.

Flooding and high water across the Midwesthave been responsible for at least 6 deaths, reports said.

Flooding have been reported in six states, and Flood Warnings were in effect across parts of 14 states, as of posting.

Shell to drill Chukchi Sea, violating air-quality standards

“EPA said it granted Shell a compliance order allowing the company’s fleet to emit pollutants at levels beyond limits set in a major permit issued to the company in January,” said a report.

That preliminary drilling is imminent, said Shell’s Alaska spokesman, Friday. “It’s likely to begin this weekend.”

China Earthquakes Update

  •  Eighty people are confirmed dead and at least 820 others injured after  two earthquakes struck SW China, according to official news.
  • An unspecified number of people are missing, and the death toll could climb.
  • The quakes struck a region near Yiliang county in Yunnan and Weining county in Guizhou Province on Friday.
  • “More than 200,000 people in Yunnan were relocated as more than 6,600 houses collapsed and another 430,000 damaged. Direct economic losses were estimated at 3.5 billion yuan (552 million U.S. dollars), according to the civil affairs department,” said a report.
  • More than 11,700 houses in Guizhou province have also been damaged.
  • At least 300 schools in the quake zone have also been damaged.
