More than 160,000 employees both in the public and private sectors have now been sacked and up to 60,000 others arrested over the past 10 months.

States of Emergency Declared for Missouri, Oklahoma as Deadly Tornadoes Hit Texas

Tornadoes in Texas, flash flooding in Missouri kill at least 10 people, injure many dozens

Tornadoes ripped through several towns in East Texas, killing at least 7 people, injuring dozens of others, destroying homes and causing widespread damage to infrastructure, according to local reports.

Missouri governor declared a state of emergency amid threats of flash flooding caused by violent rainstorms throughout The Cave State, which left at least 5 people dead or missing.

Up to 25cm of rain soaked much of the state, the National Weather Service (NWS) reported.

Oklahoma governor declared state of emergency for all 77 counties after severe storms, strong winds, snow and flooding and impacted the Sooner State.

Background:

Trump told Reuters he wants South Korea to pay for the $1 billion Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system, in an interview on Thursday.

The US military currently has six THAAD batteries in it global arsenal, with the cost of each unit estimated at $1.2 billion, according to a former U.S. State Department official, who said Washington would be unwilling to sell THAAD to Seoul.

Reflexive action by America’s “best and brightest”: All 100 US senators petition U.N. for “equal treatment of Israel”

The petition, initiated by “little” Marco Rubio, who is convinced his only path to the Oval Office is through the AIPAC, reminds the U.N., short of an explicit threat to withhold funds:

“As both the U.N.’s principal founding member and its largest contributor, the United States should insist on reform. As duly elected representatives of the American people, we take seriously our responsibility to conduct rigorous oversight of US engagement at the United Nations. We are deeply committed to international leadership and to advancing respect for human rights. But continued targeting of Israel by the U.N. Human Rights Council and other U.N. entities is unacceptable.”

Fragmented Lives: Humanitarian Overview 2014 – (Released March 2015)

The year 2014 was a traumatic one in the occupied Palestinian territory (OPT). In the Gaza Strip, 1.8 million Palestinians endured the worst escalation of hostilities since 1967: over 1,500 Palestinian civilians were killed, more than 11,000 injured and some 100,000 remain displaced. In the West Bank, increased confrontations between Palestinian demonstrators and Israeli forces resulted in the highest casualty levels in recent years, while settlement expansion and the forced displacement of Palestinians in Area C and in East Jerusalem continued. Overall, some 4,000,000 Palestinians in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip remain under an Israeli military occupation that prevents them from exercising many of their basic human rights.

Israel massacred at least 2,220 people (67% of them civilians) in Gaza during its summer 2014 operations, which resulted also in 71 Israelis deaths (9% of them civilians), according to the U.N.

“Between 7 July and 26 August, the Gaza Strip witnessed the deadliest escalation in hostilities since the beginning of the Israeli occupation in 1967. According to preliminary figures by the Protection Cluster, a total of 2,220 Palestinians, including 1,492 civilians, were killed. According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, 11,231 Palestinians were injured. Israeli attacks striking residential buildings accounted for a significant number of the civilian casualties, raising concerns about respect for the principles of distinction, proportionality and precaution in attack under international humanitarian law (IHL).”

Deadly Cerebrospinal Meningitis Outbreak in Nigeria Continues to Spread

Highlights from Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC)

An outbreak of cerebrospinal meningitis (CSM), which started in December 2016, is ongoing in Nigeria.

• As at 22nd April, 2017, of  the 9,646 suspected cases reported, 277 (2.9%) were laboratory confirmed, and 839 deaths (CFR=8.7%) recorded. [Latest local reports estimate the death toll to exceed 1,000, including about 350 in the past week alone. Editor]

• In the last four weeks (Epi-Week 12-16), 43 Local Government Areas (LGAs) have reached alert/epidemic threshold in seven States — Zamfara, Sokoto, Katsina, Kebbi, Niger, Yobe and Plateau. […]

• The first outbreak case occurred in Zamfara State during Epidemiology Week 50 (December 12– 18, 2016).

• A total of 9,646 cases with 839 deaths (CFR=8.7%) have been reported.

• Of the reported cases, 566 (5.8%) were laboratory tested; of which 277 (48.9%) were confirmed positive for bacterial meningitis.

• Neisseria meningitides serotype C. was the commonest cause of meningitis amongst those who tested positive

Majority of the suspected cases (48.2%) were in the 5-14 year age group.

• In the six most affected States— Zamfara, Sokoto, Katsina, Yobe, Kebbi, and Niger— a total of 14 LGAs are currently within the alert threshold and are therefore currently under enhanced surveillance, while 29 LGAs have reached the epidemic threshold, with full outbreak investigation and control measures being implemented

Additional Information

An outbreak of the disease killed more than 2,000 people in Nigeria in 2009.

A particularly severe epidemic of meningococcal meningitis (cerebrospinal meningitis, CSM) occurred in Nigeria between January and June 1996. There were 109,580 recorded cases and 11,717 deaths, giving a case fatality rate of 10.7% overall.

UK Foodbank Use Continues to Rise: 1,182,954 three-day emergency food supplies given to people in crisis

The Trussell Trust,  an anti-poverty charity that runs a network of over 420 foodbanks across the UK, provided 1,182,954 three-day emergency food supplies for people in crisis in the year to  March 31, 2017 including 436,000 to children.

The no. of food supplies provided in the previous year (2015-16) was 1,109,309, or about 74,000 fewer.

Armenians commemorated the 102nd anniversary of the Armenian genocide across Europe and the Americas. Thousands of demonstrators marched to Turkish embassies in Buenos Aires Los Angeles and Paris on April 24.

An estimated 1.5 million Armenians were exterminated within the Ottoman Empire and its successor state, the Republic of Turkey, between 1915 and 1923.
